Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin is Book 1 of her Refiner's Fire Series. It is probably the best book I've read in a couple of years. It's strongly Christian yet not preachy. This is historical fiction but not pedantic. It is amazingly written and researched. The setting is in the time of the U.S. Civil War in Richmond, Virginia. This book will delight you—whichever side of the Civil War you identify with. This is by far the best Civil War story I've ever read.Caroline Fletcher is a lovely young woman who lives on a plantation in Richmond. Her parents are delighted to be having a new baby, but sadly, the baby boy dies shortly after birth. Her father doesn't understand his daughter and has a difficult time communicating with her, though he loves her dearly. Caroline's closest friends are her mammy, Tessie, who's about fifteen years older than she is, servant Eli, her father's manservant Gilbert, and Grady, Tessie's little boy.As a young teen, Caroline gets acquainted with her cousins. A visit to Hilltop, her aunt and uncle's plantation, is an eye-opener for her. These people treat slaves as if they were animals. Caroline gets busy helping sick slave children and ends up sick herself.Caroline's mother is expecting again. After a long labor, the baby is stillborn, and shortly afterwards, Caroline's mother takes her own life. Caroline's father is desolate. Her Aunt Martha comes for the funeral and invites Caroline to go back to Philadelphia with her. There, Caroline meets the Reverend Nathaniel Greene, who heads up an anti-slavery group in the north. They become friends. In the meantime, she seeks comfort and friendship from her cousin Robert, who adores her. He's her savior at social events. After some time, Caroline returns home and meets a most infuriating man with blue eyes—and one of the handsomest faces she ever saw. Oh, how he makes her mad. She never wants to see him again. Of course, she does, and they argue every time they're thrown together. Soon, she realizes he is Sally's brother, a member of the notable St. John family. She can hardly believe it, and her feelings for this man are beginning to change.Caroline is also growing in her faith. Her convictions are the same, but she is learning to follow God—no matter what dangers she faces. Her spiritual mentor is Eli, the pastor of the slave church. In order not to spoil the story, I'll let you read Candle in the Darkness for yourself. It is awesome. Whether you are black or white, whether your ancestors fought on one side or the other, you will love this book. I only wish all historical fiction was this good!Candle in the Darkness contains one "white lie" that's not corrected, non-graphic descriptions of war casualties, a storyline about master-slave sexual abuse, and implied adulterous relationships. There are no explicit scenes or details. I would recommend this book to older teens and adults.

If you want to become fully engulfed in the raging of the Civil War--the battle that was fought not only physically, but also morally, sit awhile by Caroline and read her story.Having done a good bit of Civil War research on my own, I found "Candle in the Darkness" to be fascinating and well-researched. The story itself seemed a little slow at times because Austin was very thorough to explain the history of what was happening during that time. It actually made me think of books written by Ballentyne or Henty, because it wasn't just fiction, but educational. There were some mentions of how men treated the women slaves, but no scenes happened. The romance didn't stand out to me much--but that could have been because I was more fascinated with the whole historical aspect. Yes, there was romance. There were some kisses, some mentions of longing to be a wife and what it entailed. I would say that the content is more appropriate for older readers rather than the young, conservative reader--just because some of the things mentioned may lead to questions.I can't say that I fully agreed with the stand that the main character took. It was fascinating to read, her motives were very believable, but I tend to think that the Civil War was more than just rooted in slavery and the confederates' desire for states' rights more than just the right to own slaves, but that is my personal opinion. It's just that reading this book presents the idea that slavery was THE issue of the Civil War...The spiritual content--seriously, best for last. I was highly, highly impressed! God and His Word was sprinkled throughout the entire book!! There were some amazing, strong Christian characters and they knew God's Word and used God's Word. This was, beyond any doubt, a Christian book. I found it spiritually edifying. I especially liked Eli (who wouldn't?). He was amazing and said some very thought-provoking things.I also loved the very realistic battle with fear. The characters portrayed were VERY real with very real "flesh" and that was amazing to read.As a writer, I found some things to wrinkle my nose at -- Austin's style was more of the "telling" where she summarized a lot of things. I prefer action as it leads the story forward a little better, but that's my critical viewpoint. ;) I didn't always feel like I was able to fully embrace Caroline. Sometimes, her raw emotion was very riveting, but other times, I had no clue how Caroline viewed something. But yeah... as a reader I give this book an overall five star review. I recommend it for any older readers--especially those who love the Civil War.A couple of quotes:“Most folks won’t change their mind unless they have a change of heart first.”“Faith don’t come in a bushel basket, Missy. It come one step at a time. Decide to trust Him for one little thing today, and before you know it, you find out He’s so trustworthy you be putting your whole life in His hands.”

This book made me wish I had Audible so I could be with the characters as I drove to and from work. I was so riveted, I read the book in a day and a half. I didn't want to leave the characters alone too long. That lets you know how engrossing this book is.Because this book is based on the past, I was curious if the author remained accurate so I used good ole Alexa to check the days of the week when they were specified in the story and she I can say she got is day of the week correct.I won't get in to the story line in my review because enough other reviewers have already done it, but I will say that the many sides of the slavery/civil war debate were represented in this story.I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the style so I look forward to reading the two other books in this series.

It had been a while since I had read any ongoing series of comics and was looking for a jumping on point with one of the characters or teams that I liked. I just happened to stumble upon this on sale on amazon for $9 and decided to give it a try. I was really impressed by the artwork. I'm normally partial to certain artists. My favorites are Jim Lee and Michael turner and most other art pails in comparison in my opinion, but like I said before I liked the art even though it was by someone I'd never heard of. The only reason I mention the art first is because this is a comic and naturally the art is what catches your eye first. It doesn't matter how great the writing is, if the art is subpar it will take away from or your enjoyment of the work as a whole. If the art didn't matter I'd be reading something that didn't have pictures. Now to the writing. I've never read much by Gail Simone. I know who she is from Special Features on some of DC Comics DVDs that have come out in the past few years. I do know that she was a long time writer for Birds of Prey. Because of the her time on that series I believe there isn't a writer out there that knows Barbara Gordon the way she does. I don't mean Barbara as Batgirl either. I'm talking about who Barbara is deep down inside. The person she was in the wheelchair as Oracle. The person she was beforehand as well. Since she knows the character and all Barbara's been through, Gail is the perfect person to get her out of the chair and back into the Bat-suit where she belongs.I can't wait to get my hands on the second collected edition in the series. I highly recommend this to any fan of the Batman family series of books whether you are a long time reader or someone that only knows the characters from the movies. If you are someone that loves comic art and are looking for a good story, you must read this as well. This is a promising start to what looks to be one of the best series out right now.

Batman said it best in issue #6: "You were always meant to be Batgirl, Barbara." I like that Barbara Gordon is unsure of herself, suffering from insecurity after having recovered from her paralysis at a South African clinic where she underwent a radical new treatment that restored her legs and got her out of a wheelchair (which Joker put her in by shooting her and damaging her spinal cord) (see "The Killing Joke" GN). I LIKE that she's not sure of herself, not a heavyweight brawler like Batman. She has to pick her fights carefully. She is fragile, and that is dealt with in these opening issues, where she's exploring her physical limits, trying not to re-injure herself, but driven by compulsion to fight crime. There are two villains in this collection. First, a new character named Mirror, and another by the name of Gretl--both "damaged" by incidents beyond their control, which causes Barbara to deal with them out of compassion rather than anger or just the raw power of Batman. She "cares", but not to the point of allowing them to continue their murder sprees. First, Mirror lost his family in a car accident, his wife and two girls burned while he was forced to watch, as someone pulled him from the car and he alone survived. This damaged him, caused him to begin killing people who were saved by miraculous means, which he feels goes against the natural way of things--no one should survive when they were meant to die. Obviously a self reflection--hence, the name Mirror. The second villain, Gretl, was similarly victimized, but not by an accident but rather by mobsters. She was an aspiring reporter who infiltrated a gang lord's inner circle but was caught, and then murdered. Only, she didn't quite die, and the bullet to her head gave her the power to hypnotize/mesmerize men to do her bidding. In both of these cases, writer Gail Simone takes the reader on a journey through Barbara's mind, exploring her misgivings and doubts about herself as someone who overcame her disability and was able to walk again. There is a moment when she is uncertain, and even one incident where she freezes and allows someone to die--very human frailties and weaknesses that are often lost on the reader of Batman, who seems all-powerful at times, and only taken down by the most powerful of foes.Among all of the Bat-series, (and I read them all), I put them in this order by preference:BatmanDetectiveDark KnightBatman and RobinBatgirlCatwomanNightwingTeen TitansRed Hood and the OutlawsBirds of PreySuicide Squad

I must confess something, When the new 52 re-launched, I had no intention of trying to read Batgirl. I was coming in for Batman and Catwoman only. But let me tell you that would've been a grave mistake, because Batgirl is one of the best comics rewritten in the new 52. She is a lot like her counter-part from the 1990's animated series, even going so far as to use words like "doofus" and it is really cute. If you liked the show from the 90's, you need to buy Batgirl's comic because it will be a refreshing taste of nostalgia and it might even get you into reading more comics. Batman is the Dark and Nightwing is the light and Batgirl fits neatly in between those two extremes making it appealing to just about everybody. The story is rich and real, and I actually liked both of her villains a lot. They aren't Batman's villains, but they could be. No other Bat Comic has bad guys anywhere near as interesting as Batman's so this is a huge plus for Batgirl and her Author. For the fans who got upset by Barbara being able to walk again, don't be. As soon as you read it you will see that Barbara "Was always meant to be Batgirl." One of my favorite moments of the book was the interaction she had with Nightwing for one issue. This story was definitely written for us girls and when Nightwing and Batgirl part ways so she can find her confidence on her own again you will be so heartbroken. Just as I Believe Batman and Catwoman were Made for each other, I Believe Barbara and Dick are practically soul mates and I Love Barbara's inner monologues. They are very sophisticated but still filled with emotion. The Story on it's own is already good, but Batgirl is definitely first and foremost about the character. What she does is only one part of it and that is how you keep readers engaged.

"Rational  argument rarely seems as warm, as human, as it  does in this book...Carter leads the reader to  contemplate the embattled constitutional wall between  the state and religion, and he does so without  furor, without dogma, with only the qualities he  envisions in the ideal public square: moderation,  restraint, respect." -- The New  Yorker.

While not possessing the wonderful immediacy of his masterpiece, "Civility", Dr. Carter's "The Culture of Disbelief" very artfully highlights an often latent national sentiment. Characteristically referenced meticulously, Carter cites specific instances, modern and historical, of the trivialization of religiousness to support virtually every statement he makes. At the same time, he maintains an easy and accessible style that transitions smoothly from the casual to the sobering. Carter attempts to inject an urgent tone at some points, and while reading one may find oneself nodding along in agreement, but the galvanic effect of "Civility" was not present. Nonetheless, an excellent read from cover to cover.

Stephen Carter's thesis is quite a noble one: he thinks that we as a society have taken religious freedom and morphed it into something of an anti-religion bias. The public square, for instance, seems to give less and less credence to arguments or ideas informed by religion. Pro-lifers or those opposed to gay marriage are written off as 'fanatics' or simply holders of weak, because religiously informed, positions. The establishment and free-exercise clause (which Carter DOES see as a wall of seperation between church and state) has increasinly been used to banish religion from the public square entirely. This is all quite unique for me because I am an non-believer, probably unlike many reviewers here. Even as a non-believer (polite term for atheist) I can see the trivialization of religion in our culture and particularly in the political arena. As we speak, George W. Bush is being dismissed as a 'fundamentalist' because he, like most americans (according to current surveys) opposes gay marriage. Apperently opposing gay marriage ipso facto makes one a fundamentalist which ipso facto marginalizes the whole opinion. Here's the problem: the three stars I've given this book are for the thesis and the very good research (especially in part 1, where the problem is surveyed). The other two stars that I did NOT give the book were for execution. Each chapter seems to be on a wholly new topic (a seperate essay unto itself) and Carter does little to hold them together. The first section diagnoses the problem, the second section discusses the 1st amendment religion clauses (and as a law scholar, Carter gives a VERY surface level account) and the third section (apperently) works at a solution (which I was still waiting for when I closed the book for the final time). In brief, the research was good and Carter brings up many good points; they are just packaged in a quite random, meandering, book. The only other problem to speak of is that on the one hand, Carter chastises current politics (liberal politics) for discounting religious faith; on the other he chastises religious faith for often being too dogmatic and zeolous. BUT THAT IS WHAT RELIGIONS DO!Not all, to be sure, but most any catholic sect, for instance, takes stands, believes sincerely in them, and is convinced that their take is the only right one. Quite simply, most religions firmly beleive that their way is right and others are wrong - that they have access to the 'truth as revealed through god' where the rest are mistaken. To suggest that religion can still be religion while saying, "But I may be completely wrong about divine revelation or commandment," seems to take the religion out of religion. Thus, I (and Stanley Fish has wisely said just this about Carter) think Carter is trying to let faith back into liberalism by telling religion to be more secular. (Be open minded about gay marriage; you might be wrong, after all, Mr. Robertson!). [Read the section on religion in Stanley Fish's "The Trouble With Principle" for these critiques.]To conclude, the issue is one that needs to be addressed and Dr. Carter has produced a well-researched attempt to highlight what is wrong. Sadley, I did not come away from this book with a feeling that its direction and layout were strong, or that Dr. Carter's solutions were workable.

I do want to emphasize that my five star rating does not mean I am in 100% agreement with the author. I doubt that any thoughtful reader will be in total agreement. However, as a book that presents a well thought out and well constructed argument that challenges the reader, this is top drawer. It does require thoughtful reading. Since most will find some points of disagreement, it is easy to be thrown of course and miss what Carter is truly saying. He speaks both from knowledge of constitutional law and from a belief in justice for religious and non-religious equally. He repeatedly illustrates that while a person should be allowed to practice the dictates of his religion, that religion can not be allowed control over non-believers. There will be disagreement as to the extent that a person is allowed to obey the laws of his religion. I have not disagreement with the argument that Native Americans should be allowed to use peyote in their worship, that Mormons should be allowed to practice polygamy, and some other issues. I do have trouble with the idea of allowing animal sacrifice. But my disagreement and any reader's individual disagreement doesn't lessen the value of being presented with an argument which causes the reader to think and to consider his or her own evaluation of the author's premise.

I've been writing professionally about sex for 15 years, but even I sometimes have trouble talking to intimate partners about sex. In theory, it's easy, but in practice it can be more challenging, especially when the stakes feel high emotionally. Stella Harris is an excellent guide on the topic, offering practical insights and actual suggested conversation starters. She gets into the very real issues that many people face in talking about sex, whether that's fear of rejection or simply wanting to be understood. She discusses why silly role play can be helpful, shows you you can track your arousal, and how to tackle the very common situation where only one partner in a relationship has a particular sexual fantasy. Her best tools, such as her negotiation checklist, make the act of having these discussions much easier, in addition to showing how common these struggles are. She also makes it clear that there are worse things than sexual rejection, when she writes, "I'm excited when someone says not to me, because it means if/when that person says yes to something, I can believe them." Tongue Tied was useful to me in getting over the nerves I still sometimes feel and in providing a practical road map for these conversations. I wish I'd had this book in my 20s and 30s!

This is my second copy if this book! I bought the first copy on presale before it even came out because I had a dirty little secret - since before I waa even having sex I have always been a vocal proponent for open, honest, specific, healthy communication around touch, sex, love, relationships.... everything! But as vocal as I was in public, get me alone and aroused and I just didn't know how to use words, out loud, to talk about what I did or didn't want to do between the sheets. To add insult to injury, I didn't even want to talk about the fact that I didn't want to talk about it! I knew this needed to change if I was going to finally start having the kind of sex I'd been keeping in my imagination all these years, and when I found out there was a book I could read, (you know, so I didn't have to actually TALK to someone about it) I was first in line!Fast forward a couple of months, and a whole lot of really hot communication-rich sexy-fun-time later, and now I want to buy a copy for everyone I know! The second copy is a gift for my partner, we're going to book club it together and I'm so excited to see how our love life evolves and improves as we do!

This book is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to have a clearer idea of what they want out of a sexual relationship and how to ask for it. It's useful for anyone ranging from longtime kink/BDSM practicioners to those with no idea what those terms mean beyond being the pornography categories with the "weird" stuff. What's even better is the confidence, assertiveness, and capacity for establishing and respecting boundaries gained by practicing clear and effective communication regarding this tricky subject will have a positive impact on your other relationships as well. Being able to know and ask for what you want in the bedroom, where most people feel particularly poorly informed and vulnerable, makes doing so at the office or among your friends a whole lot less scary.

Such an informative, necessary book not just for kink, but for all sexual relationships. Stella has knocked it out of the park!

Tongue Tied is a work I would have loved to read when I was younger. While seemingly aimed at sexually active couples, Tongue Tied is useful for all people, including "vanilla" single virgins. Stella Harris, the author, covers a range of topics with an overall theme of learning how to get your needs met. Encouraging open and honest communication, Stella gives readers the agency to advocate for themselves and their needs--in and out of the bedroom. Early chapters offer basic ways to improve platonic interpersonal communications, skills of which will carry over to deeper conversations in more complicated relationships. Impressively, there are also exercises to refine your relationship with yourself, a topic most relationship books gloss over. While reading, I could see how valuable Tongue Tied would be to teens, especially young girls, who are socialized to worry more about hurting someone's feelings than to respect their own needs. Stella gives solid advice on negotiating sex, the influence of money, and how to have difficult conversations (including breakups and rejection), which would prepare these fledglings for the dating world. Coupled with the exercises for identifying personal and cultural biases, Stella does an exemplary job of pointing out and counteracting the unhealthy behaviors that society and the media have convinced us are "normal". A favorite excerpt of mine is on saying or hearing 'no',I'm excited when someone says no to me, because it means if/when that person says yes to something, I can believe them. This sort of positive spin is refreshing to hear and shows that all communication is good, even the conversations that don't end the way one might hope.In a perfect world, Tongue Tied would be required reading as part of every Sex Ed curriculum. With the age of first sexual contact becoming increasingly lower, Tongue Tied gives readers communication tools that otherwise would only be learned after years of trial, error, and pursuit of knowledge. As I was reading, I found myself nodding on a regular basis as I recognized bits of advice that Stella was relaying, and making mental notes of where I first encountered it. Even with all of my various education, Stella still surprised, and I discovered gems of information that were new to me. I'm looking forward to reading through Tongue Tied a second time and doing the corresponding journal exercises. Tongue Tied has so much information all pooled into one place, I'm confident that it is going to be the next standard text in the BDSM community.

Stella is an amazing teacher, and excels at teaching sex and communication in an approachable way. This book is a great in depth look at communicating your desires with your partners and a labor of love. A great gift for yourself, and the sexy people in your life!

My grandson spends hours reading the weird but true books. He absolutely loves them. He has learned alot of facts from them. He seems to like nonfiction as opposed to fiction, but I'm happy that he is reading anything. I have gotten him many books from this series as well as a similar series of fact books. He even likes the children's almanac. He should be ready for jeopardy in another 10 years.

This is a fun and silly book but also informative. My third grader picked it out for a book exchange and it was a hit. My first grader also thought it was hilarious and had fun food facts that I didn’t even know.

Our son loves all of the Weird but True books. He has ADD and loves to read books that are filled with facts and shorter bits of information instead of longer children's books. He reads at least 30 minutes-1 every night before bedtime.

Our 12 year-old grandson is more than an avid reader. He absolutely loves all the Weird But True books. They are chock full of loads of facts that one would not learn in any other book. Example: I handed him a certain brand of bottled water to which he replied, "I don't want that brand." I asked him why not, and he said "the water has too much salt in it."! I stopped drinking that brand too, because I can't get it out of my mind. I cannot recommend the Weird But True books enough if your child loves learning new facts.

My 5-and-8-year olds thought the facts in this book ranged from Ewwwww to Interesting. The older one read all of this aloud to her brother and me. It's a worthwhile buy.

These Nat Geo books are awesome. Our kids have loved them since they were 3 or 4 and are now 10. Thye make great road trip reading.

The Captive Maiden (Fairy Tale Romance Series), by Melanie Dickerson

From School Library Journal

Gr 6–10—Without magic dust or musical interludes, Dickerson delivers a wonderful spin on "Cinderella" that is full of engaging, thoughtful characters amid lively medieval pageantry. Gisela, 17, works as a servant for her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. When the Duke announces a grand tournament to celebrate the return of his oldest son, Valten, she risks everything to attend. A chance encounter with Valten changes their lives and sets off a dramatic chain of events. The measured pace incorporates suspenseful plot twists, keeping readers wondering if there will be a happily-ever-after ending. Readers of Dickerson's "Snow White"-inspired The Fairest Beauty (Zondervan, 2013) will recognize Gabe, Valten's younger brother, and Sophie, Valten's former betrothed. The character-driven story line focuses on Gisela's and Valten's individual growth as well as on their budding relationship. Detailed descriptions create a strong sense of a 1400s' medieval town, from the vibrant marketplace to the cold castles, to knights battling in front of a gallery of beautiful maidens in their finery. The setting emphasizes the limited options available to Gisela as a young maiden with no money or family. The inspirational and reflective tone shows her to be kind and forgiving despite her hardships, and Valten, brave and chivalrous, no longer seeks fame and glory, but rather welcomes the "idea of God-given purpose." This novel has lots of appeal for fans of fairy tales and of chivalry and knights.—June Shimonishi, Torrance Public Library, CA

Not only does Gisela have to contend with an evil stepmother and stepsisters who would move heaven and earth to prevent the local duke’s handsome son from pursuing her, but the evil knight Ruexner will stop at nothing to imprison the poor girl and force her into marriage. Ruexner is locked in a long-simmering grudge match against Valten, the duke’s son, who is equally smitten with our girl. Will Valten—attractive, honorable, and gifted with legendary fighting skills—overcome his nemesis to win his lady? How much luck can go Gisela and Valten’s way as they try to escape one calamitous tight spot after another? Expect high romance, melodrama, and Christian inspiration in a vivid medieval setting. Even when she seems doomed, Gisela will swoon at the thought of her handsome rescuer’s features: “How could he look so handsome with a bruised eye and dried blood at his temple?” Readers will appreciate Gisela’s pluck as she participates in her rescue—make that rescues—from Ruexner. Grades 7-10. --Anne OMalley

An adorable story! I simply can't get over Melanie Dickerson's books! She has such lovely, charming characters. And unforgettable adventures. And noble lessons. And victorious, fairy tale endings! ^_^If you like stories of feminine, endearing damsels in distress and handsome, brave, warrior-like knights, you will love Melanie Dickerson's HAGENHEIM series. Her female characters are not simpering fools, but they are sweet and lovely and always the alluring princess who allows the courageous knight to rescue her when in need. This retelling of Cinderella was no different. Gisela is a servant to her snooty, ridiculous, mean-spirited stepmother and stepsisters. She tells herself she doesn't care, and almost believes it. But then the knight she always thinks about and as a child, dreamed of marrying, appears in her life, and nothing is the same.Drama, danger, romance, and breathtaking moments ... The Captive Maiden is a perfectly lovely rendition of the classic fairy tale of Cinderella.

I liked The Captive Maiden (Hagenheim #4) by Melanie Dickerson though it was the least imaginative of the retellings so far – or at least the first half was. It was Cinderella, the classic version, barely changed until the midnight escape from the ball which was when the story finally went an entirely different direction. I liked the story (jousting!) but there were several times I thought it stretched believability. The second half was interesting since it was covering new ground – except it got repetitive so the new ground was…not so new very quickly.Specifically: (SPOILERS) I thought it was a real stretch to believe the bad guy (or his men) were able to sneak in, get in touch with evil girls, and kidnap Gisela all while soldiers were on guard searching. And then the escape, get caught, escape, get caught, escape… Was it just me or did Valten shorten their hiding every other sentence? They hide in the cave, he said, “We’ll hide 2-3 days.” They wake up, he says, “We’ll hide a couple days.” They eat breakfast, he says, “We’ll leave tonight”. So I can’t say I was surprised when they got caught after essentially *not* hiding. Most especially, the climactic ending made little sense to me. The random blindfold for no reason and then throwing them in a tower was crazy. Why would any sane bad guy leave his captives alone together? And then they escape (again) only to discover two more seconds and they’d have been rescued anyway. Honestly, I felt like the whole tower scenario was written just so there could be a “making out blindfolded” scene. Also, the big reveal at the end was too sudden. Some foreshadowing could easily have been worked in earlier.) (END SPOILERS)There was a moment during the grand climax that I expected something to happen and was disappointed when it did not. I felt like there was an opportunity for a more complex resolution to occur and the author opted for the easy way out instead. The romance was sweet and funny but I never quite bought into it. After 4 books, my feelings about the series have cemented – very cute but simple. I still love the series but they’re categorized as light YA romances in my brain now so I can stop expecting more complexity.

It's the story of Cinderella as you've never seen before! Gisela is a strong, hard-working young woman who lives under the cruel hand of her stepmother and two stepsisters. She dreams about the day she'll be free from their oppression, but in the meanwhile she's finding ways to make the most of her situation. She also dreams about Valten, the eldest son of the duke of Hagenheim and champion of tournaments around the world, whom she met when she was a child and has admired from afar. When Hagenheim hosts its own tournament and Valten comes back home, Gisela hardly hopes to even catch sight of him. But when another competing knight named Reuxner accosts her in the marketplace, Valten interferes and makes sure Gisela gets safely away from him. Valten finds the outspoken and quick-witted Gisela enchanting, and asks her to be sure to come to the tournament so he can see her again. As Valten and Gisela begin spending time together and forging a friendship, Reuxner sees this as the perfect opportunity to hurt his longtime rival. He approaches Gisela's stepmother and she agrees to sell Gisela to be Reuxner's bride. Knowing she won't marry him willingly, the two plot to kidnap Gisela and threaten Valten in order to force her acquiescence. The courageous Valten has a thing or two to say about this plan and sets off to find and rescue Gisela.I really liked the character of Valten. He's a man of strength and determination, but one of his weaknesses is relying too much on himself. The twists and turns of the story bring him to a place of humility and the realization that he needs to lean on the Lord and to accept the help of others if he ever hopes to free his captive maiden. As someone who is often stubborn enough to think I can handle things on my own, I could identify with Valten and I enjoyed his journey. There are no fairy godmothers in this version, just friends who are there to help Gisela and Valten become who they need to be. The idea of community is not always a popular one in this world that prizes fierce independence, but God desires that we walk in fellowship with others and help one another on life's path. In community is strength, and I am glad we get stories like this to come along and remind us of that every now and then.
