Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: The Book of Basketball is a 700-page work of hoops genius that would make Dr. James Naismith beam proudly – and probably blush. Author Bill Simmons, best known as ESPN.com's "The Sports Guy," explores the NBA with hilarious insight, brilliant analysis, and a bevy of irreverent footnotes. Simmons is a fan first – a fact best explained in an entertaining foreword by Malcolm Gladwell – and writes from the stands, not the press room. His knowledge and passion for the game provide him with few peers, yet his voice represents those who stick by their teams through thick and thin. As a result, The Book of Basketball is not just a tribute to hardwood heroes, but also a celebration of yelling at TV sets, revering lucky jerseys, and holding our breath until the final buzzer sounds. Throw in pages of nearly-insane statistical breakdowns (including a projected boxscore from the movie Teen Wolf), and it's easy to see why fans of all levels should clear shelf space for this instant classic.  --Dave Callanan

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Simmons, aka “the Sports Guy,” is a regular columnist on ESPN.com. He writes about all sports, with a particular affection for his hometown Boston teams. Stylistically, there’s no one quite like him writing about sports. Sardonic, both irreverent and reverent, silly, self-deprecating, and melancholy are all adjectives that can be used to describe his work. The NBA seems to bring out his best stuff, perhaps because of its unique mix of personalities and cultures and the mysteries of its team dynamics. This monster of a book (more than 700 pages) is equal parts history and analysis. Simmons summarizes the history of the league, discusses his personal fandom, includes a great “what if?” chapter (what if Michael Jordan had been drafted second by Portland instead of third by Chicago?), analyzes Most Valuable Player choices through the years, and dissects the careers of the league’s all-time best players. The true NBA fan will dive into this hefty volume and won’t resurface for about a week, emerging from the man cave unshaven, smelling of beer and pizza, grinning, and armed with NBA history, insight, anecdotes, statistics, and a dozen new examples of Simmons’ Unintentional Comedy Scale. This is just plain fun. Expect significant demand from hoops junkies. --Wes Lukowsky

A great read. Superb when Simmons doesn't let himself got lost in pop culture references. But for the life of me i cannot figure out why he ordered the chapters in the manner that he did. The meat of this book is The Pyramid, a ranking of the NBA greats. Its the best part, the thesis, the thrust of the book. Every other chapter should complement and support it. Chapters Two, Four, and Five are amazingly confusing if you don't have a great handle on who was who in the basketball Pyramid. All of those chapters occur before the basketball Pyramid. Chapter One (The Secret) and Three (How the Hell Did We Get Here?) are fantastic building blocks to the Pyramid (also probably his best chapters outside of the pyramid). This would have been a 5 star with the below ordering and i would recommend a reader new to basketball (not aware of its history pre 2000) to read in the following order:Prologue (A Four Dollar Ticket: Why Simmons loves basketball)One (The Secret: the secret that makes a player great)Three (How the Hell Did We Get Here?: a history of shifts in basketball rules, strategy, popularity and how it influenced the game)Six to Eleven (The Pyramid)Two (Russell, Then Wilt: why one was greater than the other. This comes right on the heels of the pyramid where they're fresh in your mind)Five (Most Valuable Chapter: History of the most shady MVP awards)Twelve (The Legend of Keyser Soze: The best single season by an NBA team)Thirteen (The WIne Cellar: The best hypothetical NBA team)Epilogue

I'm a pretty big fan of Bill Simmons: I listen to his Podcast, read his columns, and even briefly subscribed to HBO to watch his short-lived show. That said, it took me a long time to read The Book of Basketball, mainly because I couldn't justify paying for BS content, when there was so much available for free. Having finished reading the book today, and I can say that it was enjoyable, but it is a LONG read. The love Bill has for basketball is pretty evident, and the degree of detail he goes into is impressive. Unfortunately, I'm not as into basketball as he is, and found myself skipping paragraphs to get through it. I wished I had read it sooner, as the views reflect the years in which they were written, and are somewhat out of date for a few players. While enjoyable, the numerous footnotes used were kind of frustrating. They offer skippable tidbits that can help to flesh out a thought, but getting the content was not without struggle. I read on a Kindle app, and was able to click on the footnotes to bring them up, but I would sometimes be skipped to the end of the chapter (where the footnote was), and would then have to navigate back to where I had been. The alternatives did not seem much better, as flipping back and forth or waiting until the end of the chapter would break the flow.If you enjoyable basketball, this book offers great insight into the history of the game. If you enjoy Bill Simmons, this book offers tons of his takes. If you don't enjoy either, it won't change your opinion.Last thought: I can't believe Bill Walton didn't read the book! He can skip over the sections he's in and still have a good experience.

Last year I purchased Bill Simmons' The Book of Basketball for my birthday. Wow I didn't know what I was getting into. The book was released in 2009. I picked up the soft cover of the book which is the one I suggest everyone pick up. He has updated the book over the years only adding to how good it is. This book is 700 pages long so be ready for a long read. While it is an easy read for big fans of the NBA it may not be for the casual fan. If you aren't a fan who loves reading about the past in great detail this book may not be for you. Me? I am a big NBA fan and do love its past.I will preface everything by saying Bill Simmons isn't perfect but he is a fan, a passionate fan, who has used this medium to put down his thoughts on the sport he loves. And he did a great job in doing so. Simmons is a Celtic homer. No doubts there. And while it may make you wrinkle your nose at some of his thoughts he is still pretty centered and doesn't go too far left. Since he grew up going to Celtics games in his youth there is plenty of Celtic love in this book and some Laker hating as well. Do not let this cloud your thoughts about reading this book. Simmons did tons of research including reading a library of books on the NBA as well as tons of video research to ensure his writing was as accurate as his memory. I want to say it took him three years to write the book. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed it. His perspective is a great easy read and he loves having fun with his words. Simmons also has a love for the footnote. Almost every page has at least one. His humor can also be on the adult side at times. Not that an eleven year-old is going to pick up this book but I just wanted to mention it.I didn't start following the NBA until around the time I was eight or nine. My brother-in-law Curtis got me into playing an NBA board game (Statis Pro Basketball) in the 70's and I was hooked. Weird how a board game can get someone hooked on sport such as basketball. Go figure. It was perfect timing for me as the Larry Bird - Magic Johnson era kicked in at the same time and I've never looked back. I love history and learning more about things I enjoy. This book was perfect me. I wish there had been a little more love for my favorite Dominique Wilkins and the Atlanta Hawks but I was still very happy with his thoughts on both.We all look at sports in our own unique way. I am 43 now and how I viewed and learned the sport of basketball 30 plus years ago is much different in how I learn and view it now. To that end I loved Bill Simmons' insight into the game. To quote Paul Harvey this book gave me "the rest of the story". While I could always see the play on the court I didn't have the basketball/NBA smarts to dissect some of the details. There was little NBA coverage at that time in small town America and until the NBA hit cable it was just as hard to see games consistently. This book provides tons of insight I never had. Nowadays every move is over analyzed instantly on TV and on the web allowing us to make a better informed analysis of what we are seeing in a game and around the league. It just wasn't that way back in the day. So as Bill Simmons looks at the NBA from every possible angle I was able to live those early days of watching the NBA all over again. This time with a new appreciation. This is a must read for any NBA fan. Again it may be a bit much for the casual fan but if you think there is any possibility you might like this book I suggest you spend the $11.11 on Amazon or at some other retailer and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Funny?....Knowledgeable?....Incisive?.....All of that and more, on this update of the best Wisenheimer review of pro basketball's galaxy of personalities. Simmons locks down with barbed but accurate ratings of hundreds of pro basketballs players up to Lebron and Kobe. His statistical accounts of performances are revealingly on the mark, and the people; their habits, appearances, even off-court dramatics give a humorous but grounded honesty to his constant judgement calls on what makes a great pro player, and if they know "The Secret". You have to read it. SAA, 30Apr2018.

I preordered these a few weeks ago after deciding I'd start writing postcards to my representatives. They arrived yesterday, and they do not disappoint. They come in a nice box, and the postcards are heavy-weight and high quality. I also love that they have lines where the address goes, which helps me determine more easily how much extra space I have to write my message. Also, the art is lovely and detailed, and each one describes what that particular scientist did. I'm hoping she comes out with other postcard lines.

I was looking for postcard to send to my climate change denying senator and thought these would be perfect! Each post card has a woman in science with facts about her chosen field of study as well as an interesting image of the woman and tools she would have used in her work (telescopes, scales, microscopes, etc). The cards are a nice weight too. They are thick enough that they aren't just going to crumble in the mail. Highly recommend! There are 50 designs and 2 copies of each design for a total of 100 postcards.

It's easy to see why this box of WOMEN IN SCIENCE postcards is a hit. Based on Rachel Ignotofsky's "Women in Science" illustrations, the box contains two each of fifty cards illustrating the contributions of scientific women that range from the ancient (Hypatia), to the unsung (Dorothy Hodgkin, Biochemist and X-Ray Crystallographer), to the highly "sung" (Rachel Carson, Marie Curie) to the downright surprising (actress Hedy Lamarr, whose invention in "frequency-hopping" radio helped improve American torpedoes). Each card is done in Ignotofsky's puckish signature style, featuring good-humored portraits on dark-brown backgrounds that are loaded with facts. The cards are of good quality and should survive the rigors of international mailing -- here in the USA, they can go for a thirty-five-cent postage stamp. Highly recommended..

I have never been so utterly delighted by a set of postcards. These are fantastic! There are FIFTY different designs, and they are all beautiful. The paper is high quality and the prints are lovely. The box is what puts it over the top for me. It's a really nice, sturdy, pretty box. I intend to keep it after all the postcards are gone because it's so cool.

LOVE these! I'm sending postcards to politicians and wanted to make sure my cards celebrated women ... and these do! Extraordinary artwork combined with the individual woman's achievements and then a quote. There are 50 different designs, 2 cards per design. The postcards are nice and thick - just perfect!I think the next project should be Women in Literature ... or Women in the Arts ... or Women in Military Service ... or Women in Government ... or Women in Sports!

I love these! Couldn't have asked for them to be better.

I know someone who uses these to write to senators and congress people about important issues. I use them to include notes when I'm mailing out a package. They are well done illustrations with important facts about each woman. I know the artist has also made a Women in Sports book also. I would love to see a Women in Literature version also.

Great and inspiring set of postcards. Not super sturdy but not thin either like some other lower quality postcards. As an avid postcrosser, these have made a wonderful addition to my mailing stock and have received several compliments and thanks already. Standard postcard size, great info on the scientists, highly recommend. Only complaint id that I wish the front was a more matte appearance but that's a personal preference and has nothing to do with the overall quality and beauty of the cards.

Wow this book was fascinating. Books have to really catch my interest for me to make time to read them. This one had me researching after I quickly finished it. Made me wonder where in the world he was at when stationed and in school, and where is Sr. raven hair today. I would have loved to have heard her version of dating this man. She was so protected by God and yet I sensed the agony she must have endured. Also I wonder if any one else ever recorded their interactions with this AA. Makes me wonder who else are AA priests and we just think they are liberal priests. Good explanation for some of the seeds against Catholic teaching and how the faith has become watered down over the years.

An extremely important book for anyone who wants to clarify the "sinful" situation of the Catholic Church in our times. Briefly, the Church does not err, nor do legitimate priests. This book shows the infiltration of "bad priests" into the church to bring it down. Worth reading.

Any Catholic who has yet to read this should do so ASAP. It will answer many of the questions asked by loyal Catholics regarding Vatican II and the liberalism which has taken over.....with the approval of our Bishops.

This is just one of many items that I have either read or listened to regarding the infiltration of enemy forces into Holy Mother Church. It is real & it is maddening. I’m a Protestant convert. I did not become Catholic to worship as a Protestant. We are at war & must fight with fire. Faithful Catholics learn your faith - true Catholic Faith; become a Catechist & teach the young. There is no better way to learn the faith than having to teach it to someone else.

explains a lot about situation in the church especially it comes together like page 70 or 80. Then it starts talking about specific changes that happened. It's a shame it happened really, but God has a reason for all.

I enjoyed the read and believe we are living this invasion into our church.

Just an incredible read! Initially, it read as a conspiracy novel, and only after I have done some crosschecking on Internet I was able to say, no, this is 100% true! It is all happening around us, destruction of all traditional values, breakdown of families and pedophiles in the churches and schools, all prepared well ahead by communists, by Lenin and even more his "friend" Trotsky already in 1920ies. They designed - and started to execute - a very smart plan to eliminate morality and religion, because these were the greatest obstacles against world dominion of "Communism".The book tells an unbelievable, yet true story. A must read.

An interesting book. Set in the 1930's, published first in France. Its an incomplete story supposedly written by a young man recruited to b a Russian spy for the purpose of becoming a Catholic Priest and working to destroy the church's power. I've read other books with references to Russia's involvement in the World Council of Churches and their interest in bringing down Christianity. You could discredit this account with one exception. Most of the things the guy wrote about leading the church to do, to weaken it, have happened in our lifetimes.

Far from the Tree, by Robin Benway

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Only child Grace was adopted at birth; when she finds herself placing her own daughter up for adoption, she begins searching for the bio family she's never known. She quickly discovers that she is a middle child, sandwiched between loudmouth younger sister Maya and older brother Joaquin, who has spent nearly his entire life in the foster care system. As Grace struggles to move forward from the loss of her daughter, she begins to bond with her siblings who have hardships of their own. Maya's adoptive family is not as picture-perfect as they seem, and Joaquin is on the cusp of something wonderful but is afraid it could all end in disaster. The siblings find themselves turning to one another and learning that family comes in many forms. Benway has created three unique and endearing characters who have experienced adoption in very different ways. Grace's story will pull at heartstrings, while Maya is relatable as a teen struggling with her relationships with her family and girlfriend Claire. Joaquin is scared and rough around the edges. With a well-imagined cast of secondary characters who add angst, humor, and depth, Benway adeptly leads readers through a tale of love, loss, and self-discovery. Expect to cry real tears at this one. VERDICT Well-written and accessible, this is a must-purchase for all YA collections.—Erica Deb, Matawan Aberdeen Public Library, NJ

★ “Family issues are neither airbrushed nor oversimplified. From the first page to the last, this compassionate, funny, moving, compulsively readable novel about what makes a family gets it right.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))★ “Equally heartwarming and heart-wrenching... Benway (Emmy & Oliver) delves into the souls of these characters as they wrestle to overcome feelings of inadequacy, abandonment, and betrayal, gradually coming to understand themselves and each other.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A brilliant exercise in empathy.” (New York Times Book Review)“A sensitive exploration of what it means to be a family…With an abundance of warmth and humor, the novel continues to circle back to the message that love doesn’t require perfection — that perhaps it reveals itself most fully when we don’t quite get it right, but keep trying.” (Chicago Tribune)“Benway adeptly leads readers through a tale of love, loss, and self-discovery. Expect to cry real tears at this one.” (School Library Journal)“Far from the Tree is the kind of book that strikes close to a reader’s heart. Beautiful.” (Ally Condie, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of the Matched trilogy)“Far from the Tree is a touching story about the strength and love of unconventional families, and the unbreakable bond of siblings near and far. Robin Benway’s characters are authentically crafted, full of heart, hurt, and hope.” (Brandy Colbert, author of Pointe and Little & Lion)“A beautifully written story about the families we’re born with and the families we choose, as well as the power — and potential pain — of that choice.” (Bustle)“A deeply moving novel...The trials the three teens face are always confronted directly and never diminished; their relationships, both new and old, are complicated and beautiful.” (Shelf Awareness)“Far from the Tree dives deep into themes of heartbreak and love, and presents a profound, emotional meditation on what it means to be family.” (Brightly)

You know that feeling when you finish a book and you realize something inside you has changed because of the story and the characters and you don't know if you'll ever find another book that will move you the same way? I hadn't had that feeling in a while. I had missed it. Far from the Tree brought it back.It was refreshing to read a YA book that didn't involve two main characters falling in love as the main plot. I loved that this book was about family, different types of families, how imperfect and dysfunctional they can be, but also, how much love exists.I love this book so much that I want to carry it with me. I wish Joaquin, Grace and Maya were real so I could meet them and hug them all and tell them they deserve the best. I wish they hadn't had to suffer as much as they did but also know that what they went through led them to reunite in a moment where they needed family the most.Far from the tree is by no means perfect, there were aspects that were left in an 'open-ending' kind of way (and I am not a pro open-ending person), I also wish the book could've had 200-300 pages more so I could've seen the new-found siblings interacting more; but Joaquin, Grace and Maya's stories have a place in my heart... I love them, I love this book and I can't wait to re-read it (oh yes, I will).

Far from the Tree is about three biological siblings who have been raised in three separate homes. After giving her own baby up for adoption, Grace is desperate to find her biological mother. In her quest, she discovers she has two siblings: Joaquin and Maya. Grace and Maya were each adopted at birth. Joaquin, the oldest of three, was raised in the foster care system. As they get to know each other, the siblings begin to discover their similarities, their differences, and what family really is.So here's the deal. I just... I don't even know how to put into words how I feel about Far from the Tree. Please forgive me if this review rambles or makes no sense. Far from the Tree broke me in so many different ways.First, it broke me because I ached for Grace. Grace's story was the one I was most curious about. After having my own child, I cannot imagine giving up a child -- especially one I desperately wanted -- no matter how much I knew it would be the best thing for that child. It would kill me. Grace's experience brought me to tears more than once.Second, I'm an adoptee. While I haven't been through much of what happened to Grace, Maya, and Joaquin, I have felt some of the feelings they felt. Maya's thoughts were the ones I could relate to the most. Our situations were the most similar. We are both adoptees whose adoptive parents went on to have biological children of their own. Maya's thoughts gave validity to ones I have felt in the past. Her feelings combined with those of Joaquin and Grace touched something deep inside me.Third, Joaquin's whole situation hurt. I can't imagine what it would be like to live in his world. It makes me ache for all the foster care children out there. I want an adoption as amazing as mine for them.My review is making Far from the Tree a complete downer. It's not. There's heartache, but there are so many amazing moments. The characters learn so much about themselves and what family and loving someone means.I was a fan of Robin Benway's writing from her début novel, Emmy & Oliver, but Far from the tree blew me away. It is my favorite book I've ever read about adoptees. It encompassed so many different feelings surrounding being adopted. In my opinion, Far from the Tree was perfection. It's a very special book.

Maya, Grace, and Joaquin are all teens whose birth mother gave them up for adoption. Maya and Grace were adopted by different families and Joaquin spent his life in one foster home after another. Each teen has experienced heart break and heart ache, but when they find each other, their lives get a little easier. Far from the Tree is sweet and meaningful, packed with hope and promise.

***REVIEW ORIGINALLY POSTED ON WHAT A NERD GIRL SAYS***There are so many words to describe Robin’s brand new novel, which comes out tomorrow, but the first one that comes to mind is beautiful. This book is just beautiful.First off, let’s talk about family. This book is first and foremost about family, how it can come from many different places. Two girls are adopted and one is in a foster family that loves him. The three of them find each other find each other and become a family. But there’s also the family they go searching for and the friends they surrounded themselves with. Robin writes family so beautiful, especially that bond between siblings, whether its the relationship between the biological siblings of Grace, Maya and Joaquin or the relationship between Maya and her sister, Lauren. I have five younger siblings and we are all incredibly closed and I felt such a connection with the story of family in this novel.Second, I loved the discovery of self identity, especially for Maya and Joaquin. Maya is lesbian, has a girlfriend, and is sure of herself in that and I love that so much. It’s not a big deal at all and that’s amazing. I love that there’s that diversity in there and its written as if its not a big deal, because, hello, its totally not. But I also love Joaquin wanting to know more about himself, more about where he came from, what his culture is like. He wants to be Mark and Linda’s son but he doesn’t want to lose who he is at heart. I admire that so much.Third, Grace. Oh, Grace. I bonded with her story more than anything. I know what its like to be pregnant in high school, to feel rejected, to feel unsure of your decision, to feel like you’ve let people down, to feel like you’ve been abandoned. I didn’t have my baby; I unfortunately had a miscarriage. There’s a part early in the book where she is overwhelmed by the loss of her baby; she feels it in her body. It feels empty, like there’s something missing and she physically feels it and I cannot even begin to describe how close I felt to that. That was over a decade ago for me but all those feelings came rushing back at me.Overall, Robin has written an incredible novel here. I’ve always adored her and I remember reading Emmy and Oliver and thinking it was her best yet but this book blows it out of the water. She gets better and better with each book and this one definitely shows that. The story is great, and the emotions are real, and the fact that it centers on family and does such a great job at it is what makes this book a must read. It comes out tomorrow and I 100% urge everyone to get this book. I’m positive it’s my favorite of the year so far.

The ABSOLUTE BEST book I've ever read. If your looking for the shallow things of our Lord - then this book is NOT for you. However - if your interests are rather the deeper things - this book will take you into the depths - that few other(s) have even thought about - nor seldom mentioned from any pulpits today. This man - along with his close friend "C.S.Lewis" are without a doubt 2 of the most deep studied men of God in the 20th century. As you will find out - this book does NOT contain writings by Lloyd-Martin - but rather - recorded sermons - from the very LIPS of Jesus Himself. My initial and focused interest in buying THIS book was in regard to the very teachings of Christ about "the MANY who will say at Judgment Day, Lord - Lord have we not cast out demons in your name - done miracles in your name - and Prophesied in your name - and Jesus will say to them " I NEVER KNEW YOU - depart from me you workers of iniquity." Hey - these were the religious crowd - doing mighty things IN THE NAME OF JESUS - and He told them Depart from Me - I never knew you. Not sure what SOBERS you - but that shakes every bone in my body !!!! At the end of the book - the author discusses various topics - such as the deceived !!! Meaning - the Churched, even some of the life long religious crowd. It's a sobering read !!!!Lastly - and for me: If I get ONE THING IN THIS LIFE RIGHT - I want it to be my eternity !!!!I've purchased several copies - and given them as gifts to Pastor friends of mine. It's what every congregation needs to hear. I'll be reading the book more than once !!!!!

I bought this for my husband and after reading it he is a firm believer that if a christian could have only two books, it would have to be the Bible and this book right here. If you are a christian, this should be your second most valuable book!

Convicting easy read that has really cleared up some questions I’ve always had about the impossibility of living up to the Sermon on the Mount. His thesis is that if you think you CAN live up to it by trying hard enough then you are “doing violence” to the sermon. He starts with the Beatitudes and how they build upon one another. It all starts with being poor in spirit. Like the tax collector who beat his breast, or like Isaiah who said “I am a man of unclean lips who lives among a people of unclean lips” or like Peter after his betrayal of Christ. He talks about the impossibility of building righteousness into our own lives. Righteousness is a gift from God, but we are not just passive receivers. We have to do the work of “putting ourselves in the way of Jesus” like the blind man did. He put himself in front of Jesus and said, “I’m blind!” ..and Jesus healed him. The blind man didn’t just passively sit there waiting for something to happen. He responded to what was available. I loved that. So simple yet so revealing about why we don’t do that. He also talks about avoiding things that hinder our righteousness. But without getting all prideful about ourselves. We can go into a ditch on both sides of the road. Such a good read!

This is books ranks in my top three books I have read. Dr. Lloyd-Jones methodically marches through the Sermon on the Mount in 60 sermons (chapters) using scripture to interpret scripture while at the same time elaborating on the context of the time when Jesus preached and how it relates to our modern times. A must read!

Excellent work , here you can see very clearly that Dr. Lloyd understands that The Word of God has no expiration date like we commonly here in the church. Can God contradict Himself and make mistakes about His perfect Law? Never. In the sermon on the mount Yeshua clears that up on chapter 5:17 and on. It's time the believers dig very deep to get the true meaning of Yeshua's message here.

Lloyd-Jones just has a certain passion (fire) about him when he speaks of the nature of man and the holiness of God. I love reading him, it;s like having a trusted friend guide me along.

I received much from the reading of this book. The 5 stars are due to the fact that if you read this book with a open heart to God, the sermons of Lloyd-Jones will convict you, inspire you, press you towards the Lord Jesus, and help renew your faith in and relationship with the heavenly Father.Being used to academic and scholarly writings, I was refreshed to read an engaged and serious work but written from a pastoral and devotional perspective. There is also an element of "timelessness" in his preachings. Things said 50+ years ago are still relevant today. I used some quotes for writing a paper on Fresh Expressions/Emerging Church and the issue of Contextualisation.Possible shortcomings: As said it is not scholarly so there are no footnotes to back claims or certain information which he gives. In that regard they are preachings, although expositional in nature, not written with footnotes and references. But it is informed and serious. Some examples are outdated (written in 1959-60) although many things still relevant.I would recommend this heartily to anyone looking for a devotional-pastoral exposition of the Sermon on the Mount. It blessed and encouraged me greatly.

Unlike other studies, we felt this one gave us more insight into that "simple" sermon than any other we've read so far. I'm no scholar, so I appreciated that the delivery of this book is simple, yet it maintains the depth of the sermon. Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains the sermon in such a way that we see clearly how to act on Christ's instructions. We never felt that he tried to read into the Sermon on the Mount any of his own ideas. For any Christian who wants to understand this teaching better and who wants to live these teachings better, you'll find help of real substance here. After reading this amazing book, we bought several as gifts. It's a treasure, and we recommend you see for yourself.

#800 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The first chapter of S.L. Shelton’s new thriller, Lime Kiln Road, grabbed me hard and wouldn’t let go. His writing is so forceful, so descriptive that I was brought to a barn in a desolate part of town, the air around me frigid, the atmosphere terrifying, and the plight of Gee and her best friend, Josie became my own as the two of them fought for their lives. What’s taken place there isn’t immediately clear, although the danger the two girls are in is palpable, and the fear they feel as they fight to save themselves made me anxious … almost sick to my stomach like only an intense and incredibly well-written scene can. The imagery and the sounds that Shelton put into my head as I read caused me physical discomfort … and pushed me to continue turning the pages. As the story progresses, the reader learns more about Gee and Josie, and about the detectives that are working their case. High school girls have been kidnapped and brutally murdered in Lowder County over the past six years; and, although they are dedicated to finding the murderer, it doesn’t seem like law enforcement is getting any closer to stopping the killing spree. Gee and Josie survived their first run-in with the Catoctin Killer. Will they be able to do it again?Lime Kiln Road is made up of every single thing a well-crafted thriller should be made of. It’s deliciously dark and eerily uncomfortable. It’s gruesome and clever, and Shelton allows you, encourages you even, to believe you’ve got it figured out. Make no mistake. You don’t.

I strongly recommend this – with a caveat; it’s quite gory, and some of the subject matter is upsetting. It isn’t a “cozy mystery”. But then, in real life there’s nothing very cozy about violent crime, is there? Especially when it is sexually motivated. The book opens with two teenage girls, Gee and Josie, in a barn on a winter’s day in what seems to be rural Virginia. They and their fathers have been subject to obscene acts of violence. Their fathers are dead, and they are only just alive. One is bound and cannot move. The other is about to bleed to death. It looks like the latest atrocity by a serial killer, who for years has abducted girls with their fathers and tortured them sadistically to death. This time, unusually, it’s two girls and two fathers. And very unusually, the girls have survived. But it seems they remember very little. Meanwhile, the killings continue, in vile style – and the survivors are in terrible danger.Lime Kiln Road is gripping. And it’s got that quality of the best crime books – it keeps you thinking you know the end then thinking you don’t. I thought I knew everything fairly early on, but there was a nagging doubt in my mind, something that did not quite fit. I was right. In best crime-writer style, Shelton hits you at the end with what seems to be a dirty sucker-punch – except it isn’t, because if you’d been really paying attention, you’d have seen it coming. But Shelton’s too good to let you. This is a crime novel with real class, combining the noirishness of the American crime story with the sly mind games of a classic English detective novel. And as with Shelton’s last book, Hedged, you’re sucked in by multi-dimensional characters that you can be bothered to care about. There are two things about this book that might be hard on the reader. First, it’s pretty bloodstained. Author S.L. Shelton gives us an oblique warning about this in the book’s brief foreword (itself an unusual feature for a thriller). He explains that he spent a couple of years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA; these are a network of volunteers throughout the USA that represent the interests of neglected or abused children. He noticed, he says, “how quietly and unnoticed evil walks among us every day with a human face.” But he also noticed that there were always forces arraigned against it. In a way that is exactly what this unusual thriller is about: darkness, but also the fact that it never goes unopposed. The gore is in the book for a reason. And while it’s explicit, the author doesn’t wallow in it.The second challenging thing about this book is its credibility. Would anyone really be able to butcher so many people and evade detection for years?Well, yes. At the end of the book you do understand how it took so long to find the answer. In any case, this happens in real life. As a young man I was in England at the height of the Yorkshire Ripper murders. The Ripper killed at least 13 women from 1975 onwards and, despite being interviewed multiple times by police, was not caught until 1981 – and then by accident. But his total was modest compared to some. If one wants to confirm this, one can visit the Wikipedia page Serial Killers. But don’t. It’ll only depress you. Reading this taut, inventive thriller is a better idea. And if it gets to you a bit in places, don’t judge it until the end. As Shelton says, evil does not go unchallenged.

I'm amazed at reviewers who thought this book was great. It is not. Rather it is a boring mess that drags on all the way to the end filled with gore and horror. After Scott Wolfe, a funny action-packed series that held me spellbound, I was so looking forward to a new Shelton book. Huge disappointment.

...then took it to work the next day to make sure I really read that ending! What a twist. No way will you see it coming. But made perfect sense.I've read all of Shelton's books and this one continues his style of raw, edgy and gut-wrenching action. This story could be plucked right from today's police investigations. Intense to the MAX. Heartbreaking. Rage-inducing. One of the more explicit books I've read, and due to the subject matter at times it wasn't easy. But had me all-in for the fight of my life - I mean, Gee and Josie's lives. But finally, NEVER AGAIN.So glad I found S. L. Shelton and just waiting on his next.

I have read every previous book by Shelton, and was looking forward to yet another page turner. I found I was unwilling to even finish reading this one, mainly due to the theme that was a total departure from his other novels.

I love S.L. Shelton books; in fact I think I have read every single one, Scott Wolfe series, etc. This book is just different from previous ones, but all I have to say after reading it is WOW. Loved it Mr. Shelton. Waiting for your next one.

The pace and intrigue make this an absolute winner. Couldn't put it down. Unexpected ending was the cherry on top.

Yet another SL Shelton book that grabs your attention, sucks you in and has you guessing until the last moment. An amazing read from an incredible author.
