I have had heart surgery 4 times (yes ,you read correctly..4) and therefore it is a subject that is (pardon the pun) near and dear to my heart. I know, in many ways, way more than I ever wanted to know and way less than I should have known. This book offered me insights I had not previously been knowledgably about.The book begins with the first surgery to truly cut into the heart, during World War II in order to remove shrapnel from a soldiers heart. From there is moves on to the correction of "blue baby" syndrome to transplantation, valve jobs, bypass surgery, and what the future holds for those with cardiac issues.The chapter begin with a description of the surgery followed by the history of the development of the surgical technique, many of which were truly daring and utterly amazing. The author follows the surgery from its idea and attempts in the laboratory (if you are an animal lover, you may find this a bit much…most of the procedures required dozens of practice runs on animals before attempts in humans) and on to what became the surgery. Each was groundbreaking at the time it was performed.The author also details the issues with making the desired equipment needed to complete such surgeries such as the heart lung bypass machine, the valves used in valve jobs and so on. And a lot of engineering was needed for each surgery to proceed.Finally, the author reviews the personalities involved with the surgeries. To be a heart surgeon requires a God complex and an ego that is huge. My first surgeries were performed by a team of 2 cardiac surgeons, but my last was done by a surgeon with several physician assistants. I asked why and he explained that there could only be one "God" in the operating theater at a time. The egos of the men that performed each surgery for the first time…well, you have to read to believe how huge the egos wereThis is a wonderful book, filled with detail, yet very readable. For anyone about to undergo heart surgery it might be comforting to know just how it is done, and how safe it is. For those of us who have already been under the knife, it is interesting to learn just what goes on while you are under. Highly recommend!.

A masterfully written gripping account of the history of cardiac surgery and its bold pioneers. One of the best books I have read.

Being the patient gives new perspective on the book. January 2005 was my quadruple bypass surgery following an angiogram in Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. I was fascinated during that procedure by being able to watch as the catheter placed its dye on the x-ray image. That resulted in the new surgical assessment "Oh, crap" stated by the doc as medical termology for >90% blockages at multiple places. Interestingly the total coleseterol measured at less than 110 and had been at that value for many years. He gave me a nice video of my blocked arteries and then introduced me to his buddy, the heart surgeon. My only symptom had been shortness of breath and a totally failed Tc-99 stress test scan.Seven hours later I felt better save for the knife fight that I seem to have lost. I don't even remember what bar I was in, but no more shortness of breath. This is a good book to read if you have had or will have any sort of heart repairs.

This is a very good review of the history of heart surgery. The writing keeps one moving from one topic to the other. It has been a very enjoyable and informative read.

I worked in open-heart surgery for 25 year and I learned so much from reading this book. Great historical perspective. Wish I would have come across this book sooner. Well written...good flow!

An excellent history of a fascinating subject. This is a book that is hard to put down. When I finished it, I wanted more. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in both the science and practice of medicine. This history is also well seasoned with accounts of many of the personalities involved.

Then there's "Tower Power." Think pillows. Lots and lots of pillows. With an elf on top. Love "Pumping Iron". Hint: it involves miniature marshmallows and toothpicks. Yep - 101 fun ideas to bring a smile to faces of every age! There's even a "Poker Night"! Every other page is a photo of an actual Elf scene. Those alone are worth the price of the book!

I really, really like this collection of recipes that prolific, France-based food writer, Patricia Wells has put together from a wide variety of Parisian restaurants. Most of these dishes are classic of French cuisine, but they don't appear to be over complicated in their preparation. Soup to dessert all well-covered here, with enough even for vegetarian cooks to grab onto.I don't think Wells was shooting for a Julia Childs all-encompassing opus on the subject, but this quite fine and decent addition to any serious cook's collection of authoritative cookbooks. At the very least, it will give you travel guide of places to visit on your next trip to Paris.

I have continued to keep this cookbook handy in my kitchen because although the recipes are sort of gourmet French-ish, they are tasty and fairly easy to make and this book is a refreshing departure from the standard American faire. My only complaint is I wish they would put more pictures of the dishes because I enjoy the visual aspect of a good cookbook as inspiration while choosing a recipe. My two fav's are the Homemade Chicken Stock- all natural no MSG! And the oven roasted tomatoes- delish. I highly recommend.

This recent book by Patricia Wells is a selection of the author's favorite recipes from the restaurants, Boulangerie, and patisseries in Paris. In a sense, it broadens her focus of the book `Simply French' from the single restaurant of Joel Robuchon to look at many leading Parisian establishments. While being broader, it is also just a bit less deep in it's exploration of complicated recipes, as very few in this book match the complexity of the typical recipe in `Simply French'.I would place this book as my third or fourth French cookbook after Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking', Richard Olney's `Simple French Food', and Madeline Kamman's `The New Making of a Cook'. While these are some of the best texts on the principles and techniques of French cooking, this book by Wells is real world application of the principles. As it looks at the real world, it offers the reader some pretty unusual dishes in giving us a variety you may not find in a single restaurant cookbook, even one so good as the recent `Balthazar Cookbook' from the chefs at the New York restaurant of the same name.While this book is not a teaching book, it is still true to the style of cooking you will find in Paris and, as such, it is primarily a book for the gourmet, the entertainer, the traveler to Paris, and the wine lover. Like `Simply French', the book gives wine suggestions for all savory courses. These wine suggestions are a bit more generic than those in `Simply French', so it will be easier to find something to match, even in the oenologically backward state of Pennsylvania.Before you get the impression that none of the recipes in this book have any general currency for the average cook, I must say that many are really very easy, especially the salad, vegetable, and soup recipes. Even some meat recipes are fairly simple, such as the braised lamb shank recipe Wells did on `Emeril Live' when she made a promotional appearance after the book first came out. Everyone does braised lamb shanks, but Wells does it just a little differently, and offers some good suggestions on choosing the best cuts. But, there are some real novelties, such as the Arpege Eggs with Maple Syrup. I will be content to simply read about these dishes.The organization of recipes is classic, following almost exactly the same chapter headings as in `Simply French'. These are:Appetizers, Starters, and First CoursesSaladsBreadsVegetablesPotatoesPasta, Rice, Beans, and GrainsSoupsFish and ShellfishPoultryMeatsDessertsThe PantryThe first two chapters plus the third and fourth are real gems. At the $30 list price of this book, they are worth the price of admission. The Breads chapter is a little teaser with only six recipes, each fairly complicated, but very rewarding. Just enough to whet your appetite for a book by a bread heavyweight such as Nancy Silverton or Peter Reinhart. The chapters on protein dishes are surprisingly simple. They are certainly less complicated than the soups and desserts. The desserts chapter is quite large, with many recipes for apples, cherries, and ice cream. The Pantry chapter gives all the expected recipes for vinaigrettes, mayonnaise, spice mixes, stocks, and sauces. This is somewhat better than average.In spite of the utility of cookbooks that organize by menu for occasions and themes, this is still my favorite organization for a cookbook covering many types of dishes. One entertains once a month, maybe. One cooks for your small family in a single household every day. This is better for the latter situation.I am not a fan of splashy color photography in cookbooks. When it is there, I rarely look at it except to judge its quality for a review. To my mind, the photography in this book is just right. Its occasional black and white pictures of people and places have informative captions and decorate the book with views of Paris and its people.If you are traveling to Paris or love French food or need new recipes for entertaining with a lot of ta-da, this is the book for you. Be aware, however, that basic cooking skills and a well-equipped kitchen are a must in order to accomplish many of the recipes in this book.You may also find yourself developing irrational urges to visit your favorite travel web site for plane tickets to Paris. Highly recommended.

I really like this book. There are some fantastic recipes in it. You cannot go wrong with this purchase from the reputable and knowledgeable Patricia Wells. The measurements are good and food is delicious. There are so many wonderful recipes here to use time and time again. It is fun to see some of the recipes from restaurants and menu items that I have tried. This cookbook isn't a high gloss book with lots of photos that show a home cook what the food item should look like however. I particularly like the soup section-YUM! Oliviers & Co's Provencal three grain soup is perfect for a cold day. I added a lime curry powder to it for an added dimension. I will make this soup again and again. I appreciate that the recipes are easy to make and take up one page each in the book for the most part. So, if you want to travel to paris while being in your home kitchen, this is the book for you. Try the mustard ice cream recipe too. I really appreciate that there are numerous recognizable restaurants, shops and people that have shared their sumptuous recipes in this book. My only turn off is that the pages are thin and feel cheap to the finger. I think that this pressing must have been rushed through. I believe that a cookbook needs to be a sensory experience from photos, to page feel to cover. A cookbook should inspire and make one dream and then go into the kitchen to have fun and live one's inspiration. Patricia, you live a cook's dream life. Why don't you create a book that reflects your stories with lots of photos from your cooking classes in provence or Paris? Ms. Wells is a master at choosing recipes and executing them into a fine book. This book is a must buy!

What a delightful cookbook. I chose it for the Arpege Egg recipe. I prepared them and I will again. There are so many more recipes I want to try.

Having just returned from Paris, and already missing the food, 'The Paris Cookbook' is just what I needed. Patricia Wells again combines wonderful recipes, lovely mood photos of Paris with stories of each recipe. What I love about Wells, is the lack of photos of completed dishes. Instead the written word is used to provoke your taste buds. A lovely addition to any Francophile or Cookbook Collection.

A good dictionary at a good price is a good dictionary at a good price. What else to say?

More authoritative, less idiosyncratic, and just as much fun to read as Fowler/Gowers.

I can't in this review hope to match the authority given by the professional grammarian Geoff Pullum in his favorable review of the book. But I can respond to some of the negative points brought up by other reviewers, especially complaints about this book "validing sloppy usage", which it absolutely does not do.The key point is this: to understand the MWDEU, you have to approach the book as an fully rational adult capable of making your own decisions about what constitutes good or sloppy usage. Rest assured that the book will give you the entire history of a word, including every usage considered a "mistake" by other prescriptivist alternatives. But the evidence supplied in this book is unparalleled in any other quick reference you can find, and after supplying this voluminous information, the MWDEU will leave the final decision to you, with the implicit assumption that you are capable of using your own language judgment to come to whatever usage conclusions best suit your own unique writing style.This is vastly different from the approach of other manuals, which speak with an authoritative tone reminiscent of your middle-school English teacher. But if you are working under strict deadlines and have little time to consult the evidence personally, then you will likely find the MWDEU frustrating. In this case, you might be better off choosing a more prescriptivist guide so that you can rely on the authority of others.Just be aware that the MWDEU has put the most work into researching its topics, and thus has the best usage information of any book on the market. This means the reviewer who claimed: "The moral is that usage is a pesky, pedantic thing best ignored in favor of saying whatever feels good" is simply incorrect. The MWDEU does not believe usage is "pesky", else they wouldn't have written a usage book. The difference is that this book doesn't give empty opinions; it presents the actual evidence from notable writers and speakers, and it allows its readers to weigh the options themselves.And when the evidence dictates, they do not fail to mention a strict preference, e.g. their entry on "contemptuous". If you read their detailed history of the word, you realize that 300-500 years ago "contemptible" and "contemptuous" did not have distinct meanings. They were used interchangeably by Shakespeare, for instance. But over the last couple hundred years, based on the need of speakers and writers to be clear, a distinction has been drawn between the two words, and regardless of the history, they conclude at the end: "We are therefore joining the ranks of the cautious in advising you to keep contemptible and contemptuous distinct". Such is their superbly professional method to reach solutions about usage issues.For those of us who are no longer in school and tire quickly of pedantic lectures from overbearing instructors, this difference in tone is a welcome change, especially given the outright condescension found in so many other usage manuals. Perhaps it is not for everyone, but the MWDEU is indisputably the best researched and most accurate book out there, and for people willing to invest their own critical thinking skills, it simply has no substitute.

If you are a serious writer or editor, you will have this book on your desk.It is the bible of the descriptivist faction in the unending skirmishes over modern American grammar, diction and usage.To complement this volume, you should also have a copy of the prescriptivist bible: "Garner's Modern American Usage."Between them, they will keep you reliably informed on the language as it is actually being used and on the language as it is viewed by those who are well- (and sometimes over-) educated.Those who criticize this book for what they perceive as its anything-goes advice do not understand its purpose. They might be better served by buying only the Garner book and steering clear of this one.

I bought this along with the M-W dictionary and thesaurus. I had never heard of it, but it fills a special niche that anyone who enjoys speaking and writing correctly can appreciate. I highly recommend it.

This book is phenomenal. You should totally buy this book if you want to improve your skills in English language, especially if you are studying it as a second language.

The author is a complete narcissist and insulting in his tone. Every few pages has a paragraph that begins something along the lines of “Not long ago I was invited to the five-star Balmoral Hotel in Edinborough to present to a gathering of capital managers and their wealthiest clients”, or “At the end of my opening lecture in my 1998 course in global health...”, or “I was lecturing at Karolinska Institutet...”, or “There I had spent two days using my hands to diagnose hundreds of patients with a terrible, un-explained disease [MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY BUSY TWO DAYS!]...”, or “The first time I lectured to the staff of the world bank, I told them [AND IF I’M LECTURING THE WORLD BANK, THEN I MUST BE REALLY SMART AND HAVE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF TO SAY!]...”After reading this tedious book that could be summarized in a couple of charts, or 17” TED talk, I think if I were seated next to Hans Rosling on an airplane [FIRST CLASS, OF COURSE!], I’d be searching for an empty seat in tourist class, next to the bathrooms. Or a parachute. Or maybe just jump.

I bought this book after seeing Bill Gates recommendation, and I have been really enjoying it. It goes a long way towards explaining human cognitive behavior in the face of today's "us vs. them" social media environment, as well as more historical cases where people just have a really hard time accepting the fact that things are almost always better than they think they are, and the extremes are much rarer than most people would guess.It ought to be required reading at the high school level IMHO.It's very well written and readable (the author is famous for his Ted talks on the subject). He really wants to help everyone understand and learn how to better evaluate what they hear about the world.A couple notes: you can download a whole chapter of the book from Bill Gates web site if you want to read more of it in advance. The Kindle version is currently broken on some devices (at least my Chromebook running the Android Kindle app) where it won't render any page contents properly unless you tap to zoom out to the page browsing mode where it does look correct.

Hans Rosling explains how media bias, ideological preconceptions and statistical illiteracy makes most people (in rich countries) believe in a gloomy and spectacularly wrong worldview. The book carefully explains by data and vivid examples how positive developments are systematically underreported, while disaster news are vastly over-reported. Rosling categorise the 10 most important sources of bias and misconceptions as well as explaining strategies on how to avoid them.This book is a treasure trove of evidence based reasoning, global statistics and myth busting! I read it just after finishing Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. These books have a lot in common, both in goal and tone, but I enjoyed Rosling's book much more.Unless you have watched Roslings famous lectures (available on TED and Youtube), this book will forever change the way you understand global health, demography and development.

I read Steve Pinker’s Enlightenment Now prior to reading Factfulness, primarily because I got Pinker's book first. But I’m glad that it happened that way. Though I enjoyed Enlightenment Now, I think Factfulness drives home the same message that our world is truly making positive progress, but with such gripping real world observations that it almost reads more like Dr. Hans Rosling’s memoir.Dr. Rosling’s stories of working as a medical doctor in some of the countries that many Westerners would lump under the stereotype of an impoverished “Third World” are as real as it gets. His stories from the field illustrate the devastating results that our ignorance and biases can create. But others so clearly show the progress we, as a species, have made as a result of our better understanding of the facts.I would definitely recommend reading both Enlightenment Now, for a more academic and research-based perspective, and Factfulness, for its memorable stories that drive home the need for fact-based thinking.

I am a RS student and this is a very well thought out text book. Some of the topics are a bit hard to follow but that is also the nature of the topic. Kessler does his best to try and explain everything clearly and simply. If you need it for school great if you want some general knowledge of religion then this is a great book as well. I am only taking off a start because the book I ordered was in very poor condition so it is really a star off of Amazon for that one.

Really enjoyed reading this book for my class, has a large amount of helpful information. The only major issue is the Internet Resource links were out dated or they no longer exist. The Kindle edition was spot on with the pages numbers too!

I am in love with Gary Kessler. This was the most AMAZING BOOK ON STUDYING RELIGION/RELIGIOUS COMPARISONS! Kessler maintains such a perfect neutrality for all religions and always gives you a good argument supporting his points. (Except extreme Evangelical Christians... he kind of shows a sway in neutrality. He's not too fond of those guys). He also gives you examples of why certain aspects in different are both beneficial while still showing some of the dangers these beliefs might lead to. His writing style is just.... a work of art.

This book is interesting and easy to follow. I read it because I had to for a class but I would've read it a lot sooner had I known it existed. It's a good read.

Love this! I had to purchase this book for my religious studies class, and it was an excellent read. Content is organized nicely so things are easy to find!
