Listen to his TED talk and save yourself the cost of this book and the environment the cost of the tree used to make it and the fossil fuel used to send it to you. The author is a complete narcissist and insulting in his tone. Every few pages has a paragraph that begins something along the lines of “Not long ago I was invited to the five-star Balmoral Hotel in Edinborough to present to a gathering of capital managers and their wealthiest clients”, or “At the end of my opening lecture in my 1998 course in global health...”, or “I was lecturing at Karolinska Institutet...”, or “There I had spent two days using my hands to diagnose hundreds of patients with a terrible, un-explained disease [MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY BUSY TWO DAYS!]...”, or “The first time I lectured to the staff of the world bank, I told them [AND IF I’M LECTURING THE WORLD BANK, THEN I MUST BE REALLY SMART AND HAVE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF TO SAY!]...”After reading this tedious book that could be summarized in a couple of charts, or 17” TED talk, I think if I were seated next to Hans Rosling on an airplane [FIRST CLASS, OF COURSE!], I’d be searching for an empty seat in tourist class, next to the bathrooms. Or a parachute. Or maybe just jump.

I bought this book after seeing Bill Gates recommendation, and I have been really enjoying it. It goes a long way towards explaining human cognitive behavior in the face of today's "us vs. them" social media environment, as well as more historical cases where people just have a really hard time accepting the fact that things are almost always better than they think they are, and the extremes are much rarer than most people would guess. It ought to be required reading at the high school level IMHO.It's very well written and readable (the author is famous for his Ted talks on the subject). He really wants to help everyone understand and learn how to better evaluate what they hear about the world.A couple notes: you can download a whole chapter of the book from Bill Gates web site if you want to read more of it in advance. The Kindle version is currently broken on some devices (at least my Chromebook running the Android Kindle app) where it won't render any page contents properly unless you tap to zoom out to the page browsing mode where it does look correct.

Hans Rosling explains how media bias, ideological preconceptions and statistical illiteracy makes most people (in rich countries) believe in a gloomy and spectacularly wrong worldview. The book carefully explains by data and vivid examples how positive developments are systematically underreported, while disaster news are vastly over-reported. Rosling categorise the 10 most important sources of bias and misconceptions as well as explaining strategies on how to avoid them. This book is a treasure trove of evidence based reasoning, global statistics and myth busting! I read it just after finishing Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. These books have a lot in common, both in goal and tone, but I enjoyed Rosling's book much more.Unless you have watched Roslings famous lectures (available on TED and Youtube), this book will forever change the way you understand global health, demography and development.

I read Steve Pinker’s Enlightenment Now prior to reading Factfulness, primarily because I got Pinker's book first. But I’m glad that it happened that way. Though I enjoyed Enlightenment Now, I think Factfulness drives home the same message that our world is truly making positive progress, but with such gripping real world observations that it almost reads more like Dr. Hans Rosling’s memoir.Dr. Rosling’s stories of working as a medical doctor in some of the countries that many Westerners would lump under the stereotype of an impoverished “Third World” are as real as it gets. His stories from the field illustrate the devastating results that our ignorance and biases can create. But others so clearly show the progress we, as a species, have made as a result of our better understanding of the facts.I would definitely recommend reading both Enlightenment Now, for a more academic and research-based perspective, and Factfulness, for its memorable stories that drive home the need for fact-based thinking.

I am a RS student and this is a very well thought out text book. Some of the topics are a bit hard to follow but that is also the nature of the topic. Kessler does his best to try and explain everything clearly and simply. If you need it for school great if you want some general knowledge of religion then this is a great book as well. I am only taking off a start because the book I ordered was in very poor condition so it is really a star off of Amazon for that one.

Really enjoyed reading this book for my class, has a large amount of helpful information. The only major issue is the Internet Resource links were out dated or they no longer exist. The Kindle edition was spot on with the pages numbers too!

Fast shipping. Arrived as described. Highly recommended.

I am in love with Gary Kessler. This was the most AMAZING BOOK ON STUDYING RELIGION/RELIGIOUS COMPARISONS! Kessler maintains such a perfect neutrality for all religions and always gives you a good argument supporting his points. (Except extreme Evangelical Christians... he kind of shows a sway in neutrality. He's not too fond of those guys). He also gives you examples of why certain aspects in different are both beneficial while still showing some of the dangers these beliefs might lead to. His writing style is just.... a work of art.

Was pleased with it.

This book is interesting and easy to follow. I read it because I had to for a class but I would've read it a lot sooner had I known it existed. It's a good read.

Love this! I had to purchase this book for my religious studies class, and it was an excellent read. Content is organized nicely so things are easy to find!

interesting, insightful

A few weeks ago I read and reviewed (and did not particularly like) How to Get Started as a Technical Writer by James Gill. A reader suggested I check out The Insider’s Guide to Technical Writing by Krista Van Laan, so I’ve been working my way through it during down times in my first two weeks of training.I love it!The Insider’s Guide is a surprisingly comprehensive collection of answers to the questions I had about my new career field – What am I going to be doing all day? How do I best conduct an interview with a Subject Matter Expert? What is the style of technical writing? How does a TechComm department interact with the rest of the company? What best practices and standards do I need to be aware of to avoid embarrassing myself or making more work for my boss? What does the work flow of a documentation project look like? Can I be successful working from home or consulting?Of course almost all of this is variable depending on the individual department in which one works, and all of these are things one will learn sooner or later through experience, but sooner is always better when it comes to understanding the basics of one’s job, right?Van Laan lists quite a few books, conferences, professional organizations, websites and other venues for continuing one’s education, and she also peppers in trivia, references to technical writing in popular culture, and evidence of the “lighter side” of tech writing – making it a quick and entertaining read that left me feeling inspired to get to work!

A Comprehensive read, the guide explains everything from the necessary software to learn, to how to break into the Industry. As a Professional Writing student, I'm learning a lot from it.

This book was great! It was fun and easy to read. I don't usually enjoy the books that I read for my classes, but this one was great. The author gives lots of great advice to aspiring technical writers. She also draws from her own experience and creates a plan for you to use in the future. Not to mention, the book was only $20 to buy.

Includes some very useful information. A great reference book to have in any writer's library.

This book makes me excited about getting into Technical writing! It sugar coats nothing. It'll be a challenging path, full of deadlines, changes, and stress, but I think the benefits and challenge far outweigh that. This book covers everything you need to get started! Spectacular!

The Insider's Guide to Technical Writing delivers as promised. Many aspects of breaking into technical writing as a profession are well presented by an author who has been there.

I'm using this book as a textbook in a Technical writing class, Ms. Van Laan has a very conversational quality to her writing and I enjoy it.

Very well written book! The information provided helped to make a decision to become a Technical Writer!

The Many Lives of Catwoman: The Felonious History of a Feline Fatale, by Tim Hanley

Review

"Catwoman is the best known and longest running femme fatale in the comics world, with a history behind her creation as sensationally sordid as the feline temptress herself. Tim Hanley, with his uncanny mind for digging out hidden trivia of popular comic characters brings out a side of Catwomen few know, with frank honesty of all her virtues and flaws. This book perfectly distills the complicated 70+ year history of DC's bad girl with a heart of gold. An engaging, entertaining and vastly enjoyable history!” —Hope Nicholson, author, The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen"Feed your kitty now, because once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. Tim's words are as mesmerizing as Catwoman herself." —Adrienne Barbeau, actress and voice of Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series, and author of There Are Worse Things I Could Do"Tim Hanley has done it again! His comprehensive history of Catwoman is as engaging and enlightening as his masterworks on Wonder Woman and Lois Lane. As in his previous books, Hanley walks us from Catwoman’s on-paper origin through her myriad film and TV incarnations to her modern place in comic books, pulling on cultural and political threads to reveal what makes the world’s most famous femme fatale a truly unique feminist hero. Catwoman has outlasted the male artists and writers who have perpetually denied her agency and projected their sexual fantasies onto her. In Hanley, she finds a writer who finally succeeds in honoring her voice." —Heather Hogan, senior editor, Autostraddle“Source notes, a bibliography, and an index enhance this scrutiny worthy of a literary scholar - or a devoted comic book connoisseur! The Many Lives of Catwoman is a "must-read" for Catwoman fans, highly recommended.”—Midwest Book Review"Comic book fan or not, The Many Lives of Catwoman offers an interesting look at society's perception of women over the decades through a fictional avatar used by writers and artists to work through their own issues, misogynistic or otherwise." —PopMatters“Featuring trademark obstacles, unappreciated talent, and a bittersweet ending for Finger, Hanley’s meticulously researched work sinks its teeth into meaty, historically significant subjects, including female gender stereotypes and homoeroticism.” —Booklist Online“Hanley’s writing is comprehensive and straightforward, and fans and newbies alike will take great pleasure in reading about Catwoman’s journey.” —Publishers Weekly

After two excellent books looking at Lois LA e and Wonder Woman, this tome looks at sexism in comics which is worthy, but at the expense of looking at the character. Also, the constant descriptions of underwear and nudity in this and other comics becomes suspiciously detailed.

Excellent book on every count. Serious analysis, complete in all media: books, films, TV, animation. The descriptions are perfect, I could see Catwoman in all her incarnations. The narrative voice is attractive, varied. An excellent book even for those who do not read comics.

Product was released sooner than expected. Turns out to be an excellent read for cat woman fans. Very happy with purchase, service nd packing.

This review is for the audio CD version of The Many Lives of Catwoman, written by Tim Hanley and read by Rachel Dulude. I am generally a person who prefers print nonfiction books for both note-taking and references. This is no exception since it is rich in detail and nuance. That said, as an audio book designed for casual listening this is a remarkable edition. For starters, the research and analysis is thorough yet does not bog down the main text of the book. Hanley's insights are both compelling and interesting and brings a wonderful new perspective to both the character of Catwoman as well as the Batman franchise. There are both fun facts any fan will enjoy and detailed analysis to illustrate the changes over the years.I usually prefer a reader to be the same gender as the writer, for instance I was disappointed that Molly Haskell's book on Steven Spielberg was read by a male, the voice seemed wrong. In this case, however, Dulude adds to the strength of the book. Because so much dialogue is incorporated into the text her ability to read the parts in character provided an additional level to the argument Hanley was presenting. This is by far one of my favorite nonfiction audiobooks.I highly recommend this to anyone interested in comic books in general, Batman in particular, and gender roles in comic books both within the narrative and sociologically. For those who might want to study or use this in further research I would recommend adding a physical copy as well. I hope to do so at some point.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

From the first chapter, where author Tim Hanley disassembles the myth of Bob Kane’s creation of the character (she was actually developed by Bill Finger, like much of Batman’s early mythology), it’s clear that he won’t be pulling his punches.Hanley’s theory is that Catwoman has a unique status in comics. She regularly outsmarted Batman. Because she’s often a villain, she’s an outsider, which allows her to escape the stereotypes placed on so many other female characters in the superhero genre. That also allowed her to be more independent. (And often sexualized, which is the negative flip side of being written and drawn by men.) Her history is so long-running that she’s had a particularly varied past, which keeps her interesting. He calls her adventures “a varied journey of empowerment and exploitation.”We begin, of course, with her origin, with a necessary digression into Batman’s beginning. Hanley makes a good case for Catwoman’s differences from the start, from her prominence as a lead when other female characters were rarely even given names, speaking roles, or believable motivations to Batman’s clear infatuation with her. Unlike other femme fatales, the serial nature of comics meant that she wasn’t published by death or imprisonment.Post-war, with a pressure to reassert traditional gender roles, the Catwoman/ Batman relationship flipped to make her the romantic seeking attention from her crush. At the same time, she got a Kitty Car, an elaborate hideout, more props, and henchmen, as comics because more exaggerated (and sometimes ridiculous). Then, during the Wertham scare era, she disappeared for over a decade, until the TV show resurrected her.Hanley thoroughly covers the various actresses and their portrayals over the seasons of the show and the spinoff movie, including how the attraction angle disappeared once Eartha Kitt was cast in the third TV season because of cultural concerns over interracial romance. The book continues with the checkered history of the character in the comics, from girlfriend for Bruce Wayne to the Huntress’ dead mother and Frank Miller’s post-Crisis sordid reinvention of her as an ex-hooker (in keeping with his sexist history of abuse towards women characters).Additional chapters focus on the Burton Batman movies, a history of the character in animated series, the launch of her solo comic book, the morbid darkness of Ed Brubaker’s reinvention run, Catwoman’s time as a parent, the disastrous Catwoman movie, and the various media she’s appeared in since. By the end, I just wanted to go back to the beginning again, with more positive, entertaining stories than the morass the character has been left in. Hanley’s history made me miss the kind of Catwoman we could have, but his emphasis on the ways the character has been reinvented across her history gave me hope for another one to come sometime in the future.Because this is an independently written history, images are replaced with story descriptions and dialogue excerpts. That’s an understandable but unfortunate liability in any such comic history. An interested reader will likely want to accompany this with Catwoman: A Celebration of 75 Years or Catwoman: Nine Lives of a Feline Fatale to see a few of the actual comics discussed. (The publisher provided a digital review copy. Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

This is a very interesting biography of a fictional villain known as Catwoman. Author Hanley covers creation of the character, actor who played the character on television, in the movies, and in literature. Besides reviewing Catwoman’s social and economic environments, he examines the character’s impact on feminism and sexual stereotypes. Source notes, bibliography, and an index are provided in the Kindle and paperback versions.Rachel Dulude is an experience narrator. Rachel captured the essence of Catwoman and distinctly spoke each word. She did an excellent job narrating the book for the audio version.LibraryThing Early Reviewers Giveaway randomly chose me to receive this book. Although encouraged, I was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I received a copy of this book through Library Thing and I am so happy I did! This was not what I expected. Tim Hanley does a great job of painting a vivid picture of Cat Woman. She is one of my favorite bad girls. I wont call her a villain as she is more complex than that. If you are looking to find out more insight about this character then this book is for you. Very well written and I hope to read more of Tim Hanley's work

I can't say enough good things about Tim Hanley's comics histories and Catwoman is no exception. Highly Recommended.

I am using portions of this book for a masters level Social Work "Cognition and the Brain" class. This 301 page book is great to give you a visual of brain sections, and it does provide alphabet keys to specific sections of the brain in each image. When you open the book you get text on the left of each page, and an accompanying image on the right to color. The first image I am adding is a more advanced coloring page, and the second is of the full-page accompanying text. As you are learning, it tells you to color a specific section of the image, but it would have been more helpful if it provided guidance on coloring sections so that it flowed throughout all related picture, to help the student understand pathways, processes, etc. There are detailed instructions provided with each picture to color, however the level of text is beyond the average high school student. While many of the pictures will help even youngsters gain knowledge of brain parts, etc. the cover image is misleading as to the level of knowledge required to actually read the book to learn about the brain. This book is definitely directed to the college level student, not children. That being said, the cover image gives a good representation of how the images themselves work, so if a elementary/middle school/high school teacher used it for images only and not text, it would provide some great pages for all age learners. The cover gives a false impression as to the level of text, how many images there are (again, a 301 page book, slightly less than half are pictures), and the scope knowledge the book actually covers. All this said, this book has great use for everyone, but not all pages will be useful for everyone.

I am a medical student taking my neuro block. I'm one exam in and pretty pleased with my purchase. Loads of clear, useful images. This book has been very useful in learning pathways and cross-sections. It certainly doesn't have much clinical correlation info, but that's easy to add in to corresponding pages. This book is 1000x more engaging than any neuro textbook out there. This book also seems to highlight the same things that end up being important for exams, which can be difficult.Worth every penny.Note- there are a few mistakes like a label line that doesn't quite extend far enough, but overall I've found the information to be correct.

While really fun, I was hoping to solidify my understanding of brain anatomy. The idea behind the book is to do this by coloring each part of the brain the same color in various images from different perspectives (i.e. the medulla from a lateral view and also from a ventral view.) Problem is, the instructions aren't always clear. I'm reasonably knowledgeable about neuroanatomy, but not a neurologist or neuroscientist so maybe if I knew more about it, the instructions would make more sense. Of course, then I wouldn't need the book. There are some fairly comprehensive summaries accompanying the pictures as well.

I'm learning so much neuroanatomy through this book! The paper is thick and they cover not just the brain but the CNS and parts of the ANS (like the vagus nerve and other cranial nerves). I've always been tripped up by all the nuclei neuroanatomy (globus pallidus internal / globus pallidus external etc etc) but this book makes me want to color my way through medical school

This is a useful text for learning or review. The process of drawing and coloring does help in hooking up and remembering the various systems. However, after working through about 1/3 of the plates, I went into memory overload. Even with my ever expanding list of terms and definitions, progress slowed and became more tedious, as I would need constantly to refer back to make sense of new material. At this point I purchased Sidman's Neuroanatomy text. By using the two books simultaneously, or as needed, I started progressing rapidly again with much better comprehension. The Diamond text is a more complex compendium of structures. I started out with 20-68 Stabilo pens, but soon found out that I didn't have enough gradations of light colors; darker shades obscured stuctures. The Stabilo 68s are reasonably priced and don't bleed thru the paper; you just need to get enough of them.

Love it. The information presented in this book ranges from what you see on the front cover, the 4 basic lobes and entry level material that is at a middle school content level, to plates that would be useful for a practitioner to review. That being said, the material presented goes from simple to complex in a very straightforward and well thought out manner. Personally, I would prefer that each area you are to color was given a specific color associated with it (as you get to choose which colors go where) but overall I am highly satisfied with my purchase - BUT for some the material may be difficult. If you are in a Neuro program (BA,BS,MS,MA,PhD,MD) looking for a fun way to review structure, do it.

oooo, I'm a rising PhD neuroscientist with a background in biochemistry, so my background in the anatomy of the human brain was lacking. That is until I used this! Its a great way to learn the parts of the brain quite fast and fun. You can test yourself and be creative while doing it. Great idea for making rote memorization fun!

Long explanation cut short: I'm a neuropsychology major. I bought this book to help me study through some neuroanatomy exams and it made studying the brain a bit more fun. I love that each page has an explanation of the parts you're coloring on that page. It's also just good practice to get hands on when you're studying. I found coloring the individual parts of the brain a really helpful tool and a lot more fun than simply staring at images.

Thirst: Poems, by Mary Oliver

Review

To read Thirst, is to feel gratititude for the simple fact of being alive. This is not surprising, as it is the effect [Oliver's] best work has produced in readers for the past 43 years. —Angela O'Donnell, America Magazine "Mary Oliver moves by instinct, faith, and determination. She is among our finest poets, and still growing." —Alicia Ostriker, The Nation"It has always seemed, across her [many] books of poetry, . . . that Mary Oliver might leave us at any minute. Even a 1984 Pulitzer Prize couldn't pin her to the ground. She'd change quietly into a heron or a bear and fly or walk on forever." —Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times "Mary Oliver. In a region that has produced most of the nation's poet laureates, it is risky to single out one fragile 71-year-old bard of Provincetown. But Mary Oliver, who won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1983, is my choice for her joyous, accessible, intimate observations of the natural world. Her Wild Geese has become so popular it now graces posters in dorm rooms across the land. But don't hold that against her. Read almost anything in New and Selected Poems. She teaches us the profound act of paying attention—a living wonder that makes it possible to appreciate all the others."—Renée Loth, Boston Globe

About the Author

A private person by nature, Mary Oliver has given very few interviews over the years. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. And speak it has, for the past five decades, to countless readers. The New York Times recently acknowledged Mary Oliver as “far and away, this country’s best-selling poet.” Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28; No Voyage and Other Poems, originally printed in the UK by Dent Press, was reissued in the United States in 1965 by Houghton Mifflin. Oliver has since published many works of poetry and prose. As a young woman, Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but took no degree. She lived for several years at the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in upper New York state, companion to the poet’s sister Norma Millay. It was there, in the late ’50s, that she met photographer Molly Malone Cook. For more than forty years, Cook and Oliver made their home together, largely in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they lived until Cook’s death in 2005. Over the course of her long and illustrious career, Oliver has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has also received the Shelley Memorial Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship; an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award; the Christopher Award and the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award for House of Light; the National Book Award for New and Selected Poems; a Lannan Foundation Literary Award; and the New England Booksellers Association Award for Literary Excellence. Oliver’s essays have appeared in Best American Essays 1996, 1998, 2001; the Anchor Essay Annual 1998, as well as Orion, Onearth and other periodicals. Oliver was editor of Best American Essays 2009. Oliver’s books on the craft of poetry, A Poetry Handbook and Rules for the Dance, are used widely in writing programs. She is an acclaimed reader and has read in practically every state as well as other countries. She has led workshops at various colleges and universities, and held residencies at Case Western Reserve University, Bucknell University, University of Cincinnati, and Sweet Briar College. From 1995, for five years, she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching at Bennington College. She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from The Art Institute of Boston (1998), Dartmouth College (2007) and Tufts University (2008). Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the inspiration for much of her work. Beacon Press maintains a Mary Oliver website, maryoliver.beacon.org. I didn't know the name Mary Oliver or anything about her poetry until sometime during the past few months. I learned of her writing as I often learn of poets and authors with whom I am unfamiliar, i.e. through a book or magazine article that I'm reading. Her name and poems kept appearing in what I was reading. "Thirst: Poems" is the first book of poetry by Ms. Oliver that I have read, and I haven't even finished it yet. If you look her up on an internet search engine, you will learn that she has published several (30 or more?) books of poetry. I'm continuing to read this volume a few poems at a sitting. Reviewers cite Ms. Oliver's poems on nature and the natural world as a primary subject. I have just been looking through the volume and, in this season of Lent, have been drawn to some of her poems that deal with faith and spiritual subjects, e.g. "Gethsemane" and "The Poet Thinks about the Donkey." I gave the book a 5-star rating because, at least thus far, her poems are very readable. She communicates well. Reading her poems, you could almost feel as if you had known her for a good, long time.

I’d expected to love this one because it was the book published after Oliver’s partner of 50 years died and supposedly was a beautiful meditation on grief. I didn’t get that. Unlike most of Oliver’s books, there were few passages I highlighted or poems I bookmarked to reread. Her discussions of religion — more prominent than in other books — seemed awkwardly formed, as if she was trying to find solace in it but couldn't. I’d put this one lower on the list of Oliver titles to try. That said, two bits I liked a lot. One is where she absorbs a lesson from roses around the world in springtime: “the answer was simply to rise/ in joyfulness, all their days./ Have I found any better teaching?” The other is a conclusion about grief: “Therefore I have given precedence/ to all my sudden, sullen, dark moods/ that hold you in the center of my world./ And I say to my body: grow thinner still. And I say to my fingers, type me a pretty song./ And I say to my heart: rave on.” Grade: B

This is a small, but convincing volume of poetry by an author who clearly knows the tools of her quite trade well. The pieces included are mostly celebratory in nature, which I appreciate, thinking along with the poet that the world is a mostly beautiful place about which endless happy songs should be sung. We have had enough laments for a while, perhaps. And there are happy songs here concerning snowfalls in which the speaker comes home "red-cheeked from the roused wind," trees that speak through their leaves, and luna moths. A dog appreciates a sunset, we look into the "nameless stars" that swim in a snake's eye, and the ghost of Walt Whitman seems to inhabit lines such as: "when I speak to the fox,/ the sparrow, the lost dog, the shivering sea-goose, know/ that really I am speaking to you whenever I say,/ as I do all morning and afternoon: Come in, Come in." Oliver is speaking to God, however, whereas Whitman was speaking to humanity, or the great natural world as an indivisible whole. The lament inevitably comes, however (about halfway through the collection). And the later poems in Thirst deal almost exclusively with the speaker's attempts to reconcile herself with Christiandom's version of god. They lose their footing and slip into a kind of unpleasant (to me, at least) sermonizing. By the end of the book, there are few concrete images left and purely dogmatic statements have crept into the material, although it should be kept in mind that these pieces probably were specfically targeted to Christian and/or Catholic markets.Overall, it is not worth the price but well worth your time, if that makes any sense.

Here I thought ONLY Khalil Gibran's poetry, no matter how many times I've read it, could ever move me to tears. My god, how wrong I was and for this, I could not be more grateful. This is writing which brings a keen awareness to the magnificence and innocence of being and of being in nature. It shall melt your heart over and over again as your consciousness moves through the soul of her words. Experience your spirit soar and your heart expand ad infinitum.

I bought this little book for my daughter-in-law, who discovered Mary Oliver last year and has raved about her poems. As I read through this volume before sending it off, the many reasons Oliver is so popular became very clear to me. Much contemporary American poetry is so impenetrable that it holds interest only for English graduate students or professors. I myself was a college English teacher, but when I sit down to read a poem now, I do it for pleasure, not as an excuse for exegesis. Pleasure is what Oliver's poems provide, even as they touch the heart and elicit tears. They are unpretentious, direct, and very lovely.

Clearly, Mary Oliver has grown more religious as she's aged. (She's in her late 70s now.) And there are some Christian images in this new poetry which may surprise her readers. But some of these poems are also deeper and more personal than earlier work, and I like having them on my Kindle for easy reference.I'm not quite sure who's responsible for the electronic layout, but I found it frustrating that some lines appeared in larger type than others. In fact some stanzas were of different sizes, which I found irritating. And who wants someone to tell you how much time it will take you to "finish" a book of poetry? In this case, I'd say a few years.

Wonderful and uplifting!

Get mindful and read her work!

A very amazing story of sacrifice, perseverance and pain all rolled up into an adventure story unprecedented in modern history. After Ed traverses literally thousands of miles of mountain terrain, jungle, swamp and flooded riverine areas on foot he actually complains, towards reaching small areas that resemble civilization, that the loggers, and cattlemen conspired to tame some of the vast country for commercial purposes. As I continued reading, I thought - really - and the many indigenous people that he met along the way, who were living in squalor, should continue to do what? I would have rated the book 5 stars had it not been for that one complaint. I'm sure Ed and many others will disagree with my thoughts, however, I still enjoyed the book.

and so here we are. Like most 1 or 2 star reviews I have issues with the book. Not the subject matter. Either you applaud the attempt or you have no interest in it. But the way it’s presented. God Almighty! No wonder it took him 2 years. If he would have taken a few weeks to look at what he was going to do, he could have walked it in a year. Relying on other people is no way to get YOUR dream accomplished. Do it yourself! Take the responsibility. Take the blame. Take the credit. But realize it’s you. Not “them” trying to hold you back. Simply can not recommend this.

Ed Stafford's epic expedition from the source of the Amazon to the mouth of the Atlantic ocean is absolutely astonishing in concept alone. His account in "Walking the Amazon" digs into the deeper experience of struggling through swamps of bramble and quagmire, the difficulties of managing the expedition, and the struggle to manage himself mentally and emotionally through the self-imposed ordeal. This walk is not a stroll, so if you're interested in flora and fauna you won't find it here. What you fill find is a man struggling through the thickest bramble, swamps, mud, and with his own self as he accomplishes something which had never been done before. Hostile and fearful natives, bizarre beliefs about "white men", and bureaucracy all add to the complexity of this mission.

A little drab in the middle, I felt like he was pissing and moaning about his emotional / mental state more than even describing why/what he went through physically to be exhausted along with his travel mates, what the saw including wildlife, etc. Although he does express the minds numbing ness of the expidetion. Overall it was a good book, and a truly amazing accomplishment!

I remember browsing about Ed Stafford's journey briefly and decided that I had to know more about the journey that took him from the source of the Amazon all the way to the sea. Stafford's detailed analysis of what it was like to be the first known human in history to walk the entire length of the Amazon is one tale that will leave you feeling like you stepped into the jungle with Stafford himself. Each chapter flows really well into the next. Battling both mental and psychical obstacles on this expedition, from feelings of loneliness, mosquitoes, pit vipers, and feelings of doubt, there are also moments of joy, camaraderie, and gratefulness. Stafford manages to conquer each obstacle in his own unique way, all the while setting out to do what no one had done before. With every thorny bramble and river crossing, this heroic Englishman is proof that, with determination and preservation, we are capable of great things! This was one of the best books I have ever read. I have gained another great role model in Stafford. For the "armchair explorers", the truly adventurous or those wishing they can leave their rat race existence behind for a while, this book is one that should be on every literacy list! Upon every completed chapter, I would brag to friends about Stafford's escapades as if I had done exactly what he did! Now you know that is a great read!

I've dipped into virtually every part of the trip that the author walked, step-by-step. but i did nothing like Stafford did in striding the whole thing. while in Iquitos, Peru on the headwaters of the Amazon, i offered to join him for a week walking, but he misunderstood and replied he already had a guide. Ed is either a terrific writer or had a strong editor, for the book is a pleasure to read, whereas a lesser told tale would have grown stale after the first millionth step through that most inhospital environment on earth.

Over 2 years and 4 months trekking through the Amazon could have fostered insight into the indigenous people, the flora and fauna but the author is not scientist nor anthropologist. As such, no real gripping tales of wildlife encounters and only 1 or 2 detentions by local authorities, which have little surprise or peril.. Was a heads down walk story that's decent but this reader wasn't left convinced the author was committed much to conservation, instead being focused on setting a personal record. Conservation of the rainforest seemed a means to an end only to get funding as we learn little about this bike is intended to invoke positive change. a well-paced deliberate story at first is hastened to a quick ending, as if running up against publisher's deadline. Much better Amazon adventure reads exist; with experiences unfettered by personal achievement like this one.

The book is really about his walk. It's not about the jungle, the flora and fauna. It's not about the people he meets. It is unfortunately very weak in even giving a good portrait of his longest walking partner (over two years), Cho. It has only passing mention of the terrible things that have happened to the tribes. It barely considers the political situations. Ed slogs and his book is about a 860 day slog. It's interesting in it's own self absorbed, myopically focused way (poor me! I got myself addicted to valium in the jungle), but it could have been so much better. That said, many record setters ARE myopically focused. Someone with more interest in what is around them or the people they talk to (I can't believe he didn't learn Spanish or Portuguese in preparation) might not have gotten the feat done.
