June 15, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt GÃ¶del. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and GÃ¶del) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

August 17, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

April 14, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSince many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.

This graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt GÃ¶del. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and GÃ¶del) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

In this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

Since many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.

This book could be so much more than 2 stars if it were properly edited by a native English speaker. The translation and composition errors are numerous. Think: "I fed this through Google translate and here you go!" Regarding the content, some tips are decent, but nothing like a Frommer's Guide or a book in the Rick Steves series. I urge the author to get an editor and put out a second edition. It is exhausting trying to read English that is so littered with errors.

This is a book about mindfulness and resilience, both very useful concepts that are very difficult to apply. Even if you feel like you have a basic appreciation of the how to be be more mindful and resilient, reading about them again, and considering a slightly different approach to achieving them canâ€™t hurt.While it has a business focus, you can apply what you learn to both personal and work situations. The author also explains how to apply the model and techniques in individual and team contexts. And while not about Agile, the book also left me with some ideas for activities to use in Sprint Retrospectives, which are after all, a practice teams use to be more mindful and resilient.Positive Intelligence is a rather quick read (but you will want to take notes and mark pages), which mixes discussions, stories, and practices, so you can apply what youâ€™ve learned. The book also makes frequent references to resource on the companion website. If you feel that negative reactions are holding you back, even subtly, this book is worth a read.

As the writer says, changing your life is only 20% know-how, the other 80% is DOING it. It's like reading about exercising versus doing the exercise. The book is a great guide for making the process of becoming more positive much easier and fact based (rather than fluffy affirmations, etc.) He prescribes a specific daily regimen to help physically make the parts of your brain that are responsible for positivity stronger, and slowly decrease the strength of the negative parts of your brain. Only buy it if you are serious about spending at least 30 days REALLY focusing on this (but only for a few minutes a day throughout the day). If you want a quick feel good book, go watch tv. :-)

I am an MD/MBA who has worked in the finance field for over 15 years. I recently decided to make a career transition into the field of clinical informatics/big data analysis which is somewhat new to me and brought with it a bit of uncertainty, risk, and to some degree a nugget of self-doubt. I sought the help of an executive coach to help me with this decision. One of the first things my new coach recommended was that I read the book Positive Intelligence. Since I am already a fan of the field of Positive Psychology, I did not resist this recommendation.I must say that this book exceeded the lofty expectations that my coach praised it for. It is a practical, easy to read, can't put down book that teaches valuable life lessons and skills to increase performance in all facets of life. I practice the skills in the book on a daily basis. I have learned techniques to help my mind work for me and not against me -- the key learning that everyone will takeaway from the time invested in reading Positive Intelligence. I enjoyed it so much that I have recommended it to all of my family, friends and colleagues. I hope Dr. Chamine follows up with a sequel!

A very good book, easy to read. It does what it says it does and it does it well, while remaining easily accessible and, most of all, fun to read. I really enjoyed myself reading it.I hesitated a bit to buy it after reading some of the bad reviews, but after reading it I can only believe that these reviewers did not read it to the end. So here is my (Hyper-)rational meaning about it:What it does for you:- it shows you by which mechanisms your brain tries to protect itself even when it is not necessary, as a result limiting you both in your work and in your everyday life.- it gives you easy, quick and fun techniques to help you reverse that tendency, by getting more conscious of these defense mechanisms. That way they can still defend you when necessary, but they don't get in the way when you need to move forward.- it opens a window to your "feelings" in a no "touchy-feely" approach. Even if you are a very down to earth kind of person (which I am), you should not feel uncomfortable there.- it explains you the fundamentals of the science behind these techniques, and it gives you the references of the books and researches it is based on. That way you do not need to get a Masters degree in cognitive sciences to benefit from this book (but you can get started if you want :).What it does not do for you:- as already mentioned, it is not a complete science compendium. Do not expect hardcore science. Indeed, the author is quite clear as to when his words are the standard in the fields, and to when he is using his own words to summarize something more complex (and then he gives you the references you need to get more details if you want). NOTE: this aspect was at the core of all the bad reviews I read about this book. The tone was like > "it just says the same usual stuff, just with other words". Yes and I loved it. Because that way it speaks my language and the whole thing makes much more sense that a very complex scientific language or a hippie flower power approach (no judgement there, it is not just my preference) > "this or that book explains all that so much better and in more details". True, and the author explicitly explains that it was on purpose he kept it simple. Several of these books that are so much better are indeed referred to, and their contribution acknowledged. > "he's just trying to sell books". Of course he wants to sell books. He's obviously good at what he does so why should he not make money with it? > "it's not a book about work environment, it is a book on self-improvement". Well it is both. It can be useful on a strictly personal level, but almost all examples are work related. Even the ones on a personal level becomes personal only after deviating from an originally professional situation. Indeed if you only want a self-improvement book, you may find that it sounds too professional (seems that we are never happy anyways? What a coincidence! it's precisely what the book is about :-)- it does not go into deep psychological analyses of the feelings it mentions. The feelings involved are described in just enough details to understand the process, to relate to the description (see warning bellow) and to be able to practice the proposed technique.- it does not condemn you to a hard and long process if you want to follow its advice. Indeed, you will probably find out that if you just follow your usual habits with a bit more attention to what you are doing, you are already practicing the proposed techniques.- it does not solve the problem (if you have one) for you either. Just reading the book passively out of curiosity will sure teach you something, but it won't change your life. Reading actively is still necessary.Now a warning:you will probably feel that the book was written just for you. I am generally quite active, confident, and in touch with my feelings, good or bad, without letting them paralyze me or blind me (okay: not too much). My score to the positive intelligence test before reading the book was not bad at all, although still with room for improvement. Still many of the examples of "bad" reactions to the environment sounded terribly familiar. And I mean: terribly familiar, some examples could have been written about me!! My point it, I would bet you will feel the same. So read it with an open mind, when you feel he's talking about you embrace it, play with it, and turn it into your advantage. You never get too many of these.
