The Tao Te Ching is a book of ancient wisdom that is applicable to any time and any place. Anyone interested Taoist thought who cannot read the Chinese of twenty-five hundred years ago is likely to have several translations of the Tao Te Ching on their book shelf. There are many choices in English, and it is clear that there can be no definitive translation of this extraordinary book. Some translations try to be faithful to the text and to its times, others faithful to what they believe is the spirit of the text, yet others to what the translator thinks the text ought to be to suit a twenty-first century mind-set. All have their place, and there are many decent translations that offer insight into this profound, and at times unfathomable, book of wisdom. I admire in particular the versions of John C. Wu, Lin Yu Tang, and Stephen Mitchell. However, the version of William Scott Wilson has been my favorite for several years now.In addition to his obviously deep knowledge of classical Chinese (and Asian culture in general) and the historical times and culture surrounding the Tao Te Ching, Wilson has found inspiration in the etymology of the Chinese characters themselves. The original versions of the book must have been written in a very early form of Chinese characters called the Great Seal Script. These beautiful ancient characters offer remarkable insights, both direct and metaphorical, into their meanings that have all but disappeared in their evolution over the centuries. Understanding the etymology brings nuances to the text that are revealing and refreshing. Ultimately I find this translation to be faithful both to the text and to my understanding of Lao Tzu's thought. At the same time it is written in a very personable style with an insight and a playfulness that make it unique.The book has an excellent Introduction that covers the historical background to the text, the `perennial philosophy' that underlies Taoist thought, and the translation itself. In addition the translation is followed by two essays -- one on Taoism and Zen, and the other on The Tao and the Martial Arts of Japan (of which the author is an expert) -- that help to set the Tao Te Ching into the larger context of Asian thought, which it so deeply influenced. There are extensive end-notes that bring further insights into the text, many of which are from the other great Taoist philosopher, Chuang Tzu. The book is beautifully laid out and illustrated with Chinese ink paintings as well as a page illustrating the first chapter of the Tao Te Ching written in the Great Seal script (this applies both to the printed version and to the version on Kindle). As I have suggested in the writing of this review, the author has adopted the Wade-Giles form of romanization of Chinese words.This translation serves as both an excellent introduction to the Tao Te Ching and the philosophy behind it, as well as a companionable guide in deepening understanding of this great classic.
William Scott Wilson is a careful researcher and translator, intent on conveying as accurately as possible the intent of the original author(s). He is careful to tell the reader when something is difficult to translate precisely into English, gives alternative meanings, and explains the author's point of view when necessary, based on Wilson's long study of the author's history and culture. When I compare Wilson's translations and discussion to others, I uniformly find his superior. If you are looking for a single, excellent translation of the Tao Te Ching, you need look no further.

along with Tao of Pooh and the Te of Piglet, this translation gives a beginner like myself, a good primer to The Way and Taoism, one of the most down to earth set of beliefs for all of us to follow, especially when we are bombarded with so many fundamentalist views of all religions.........people are getting more polemical day by day, reading newspapers which are paranoid and argumentative, counterproductive to all things good and loving!
If people 2500 years ago could contemplate these question why today do we not. Conducting ones life in the most simple ways creates the best outcomes

II enjoyed the background for the book at the beginning. As for the Tao Te Ching itself, I keep rereading the verses, assimilating more and appreciating the poetic language. of this translation. An excellent purchase that becomes dog-eared from usage.
The words contained in some of the passages was just what i needed to hear. Uplifting and very, very meaningful
