If I could make one book required reading for Catholic parents and educators, it is Stratford Caldecott's "Beauty for Truth's Sake". In six succinct chapters, he leads readers from the history of education's disintegration to a vision for its restoration and `re-enchantment'. Caldecott's proposal to return wonder, beauty, integrity and, thus, enchantment to the sphere of education calls for a reawakening of some ancient sensibilities.Modern man has been uprooted from the very ground of his own being - the Word of God expressed as number, proportion and form, which undergirds Creation's beauty and his own. His awareness of sacred symbolism has been dulled by the divorce of poetry and pedagogy. He comes to the study of philosophy and theology unprepared by music, and disconnected from history. He suffers from the deformation of the Liturgy, and in his flattened state has lost capacity for interior freedom.The keys to meaning are (and always have been) form, gestalt, beauty, interiority, relationship, radiance and purpose. An education for meaning would therefore begin with an education in the perception of form. The `re-enchantment' of education would open our eyes to the meaning and beauty of the cosmos.Caldecott would restore to us the interior spaciousness expressed in the great medieval cathedrals by the interplay of light, space, "stone and statuary, rose windows and labyrinths" in the service of Sacred Liturgy. I nearly gave this book four stars because in so many places I was left thirsting for more, and there were some instances where the mathematical references are not clear to the lay person (especially one who hasn't revisited geometry in a while). However, this book is too important to quibble over those shortcomings. Caldecott lays out a forceful case for why we need to get back to a "quadrivium-like" program of liberal arts education in our schools. I say "quadrivium-like" because Caldecott proposes not just reinstating the classical education, but bringing to bear all that we have learned since the Greeks to enhance it. But it's really unfair to categorize this book as merely making a case for a liberal arts renaissance. It goes far beyond that; through examples Caldecott shows the reader how reinvigorating a sense of beauty and sacred order in the cosmos - and in how we undertake to learn about it through the sciences - would do much not only to redeem education, but redeem the world and its errant philosophies.Be forewarned: after reading Beauty for Truth's Sake, you will have written down and perhaps purchased at least 3-5 other books to take you further in the study of the intersection of beauty, truth, and the sciences. For myself, I bought the companion book "Beauty in the Word" (also by Caldecott), which covers the Trivium, Ratzinger's "The Spirit of the Liturgy," Vitruvius' "On Architecture," and Lawlor's "Sacred Geometry."Caldecott has done much in this relatively short work to reawaken in me a love for math and science, and a new perspective as to how these seemingly secular fields are every bit as much a sacred endeavor as engaging the written word.

A little heady, but a great read on how there is beauty in things like math and how they point to God in ways most do not realize. I would recommend.

I was struck by this book as was Fr. Nichols: it hit me "with the force of revelation," what I should have realized better from my study of Plato, that a consideration and love of beauty needs to be weaved into free, deep, and philosophical education (the only kind of genuine education). Let's hope that this book plays a crucial role in a broad recovery among households and institutions of Christian civilization.

Having heard Mr. Berger speak, I can report that he is an engaging presenter who has a number of sensible things to communicate about the importance of questions. I was glad I heard him because it raised my opinion of his work since I find this book to be rather mediocre. It’s not the theme that is a weakness of the book. In fact, I think there is value in reminding people of the importance of inquiry. Where the book falls short is in the typical shortcomings of books in the business genre: it is about three times as long as it needs to be (for a book that is already short) and it doesn’t actually provide concrete solutions to the problems it poses.I often find that books meant to help people innovate (particularly in business) have decent points to make but tend to make the same point over and over. Here Mr. Berger reminds us of the inquisitiveness of children and explores why we lose this ability as we age. Then he encourages us to bring back this ability in business, in life, and in education where he repeats the same variation on the theme over and over. However, as he keeps saying we need to question more, and as he provides some techniques to do so, he can’t say when or how exactly we should be doing this because, in fact, sometimes we shouldn’t be asking questions, we should be acting.Still, as I said before, there is definite value in the point Mr. Berger is trying to make and many of the anecdotes from life and business that he brings in to make his point are interesting, though I’m not sure about all the asides. However, for a reader who wants to be reminded of the importance of questioning, this is a good place to begin.

I first heard Warren Berger on The Knowledge Project podcast, then purchased this book in an effort to improve my own questioning ability. While it is a great resource for asking better questions, this book offers so much more than that. It's an insightful look into the role of inquiry in modern life. Berger suggests that as the world becomes more complex and dynamic, questions become more valuable than answers. He offers a framework to formulate and ask better questions. But he also digs deeper into topics such as the age of adaptation, design thinking, our education system, and the reasons people avoid fundamental questioning. As an added bonus, there are some brilliant questions Berger challenges us to consider for ourselves along the way.

This was a refreshing, powerful read that lingered in my mind. And every conversation I had for a long time after. I have recommended it to many friends and strangers. Am considering ordering a stack and handing them out. Is like an antidote to the lobbing of opinions, tirades, emotional appeals, soundbites, and status quo found in our discourses national, local, online, and perhaps at the dinner table.Is not just a book about change for change's sake, either. Revolution minus reason is not the goal. Innovation requires perseverance, personal motivation, and a specific need. Questions.This book is great for high schoolers, college students, adults, innovators, mechanics, doctors, teachers, administrators, lawyers, janitors, jailers, pilots, housewives, politicians, clergy, nurses, therapists, zoo keepers, authors, artists, tv producers, scientists, secretaries, salesman, farmers, grandparents, godparents, new parents, never parents, and in a nutshell: any person who thinks, wonders, acts, and lives on this planet.Might be interesting as a book club read. Certainly good as a book re-read. Am off to pick it up again. Am eager to re-read the narrative of the man whose personal "why" transformed the world of prosthetics. One of many Beautiful questions.

After reading Glimmer, Warren Berger's 2009 book looking at designers and design thinking, I became a fan of sorts and pre-ordered A More Beautiful Question anticipating something good as a follow-up. I wasn't disappointed. Like Glimmer -- and perhaps design thinking -- Berger takes both a deep dive and a broad stroke over his subject matter. This is tough to do well, but Berger pulls it off.There is something delightful about looking at something that seems so obvious and simple, but is far from simplistic, in detail. Berger goes through the vast swaths of research and evidence on question formation and innovation and blends it seamlessly with anecdotes, observations and questions...lots and lots of questions. To 'live the title' of the book, the text is organized around questions and, at least with the Kindle, the questions are hyperlinked to explanations at the back about their origin and relevance. This feature was wonderful and frustrating -- but largely due to technology. I read using a Nexus tablet, but my preferred reader is the original Kindle. On that latter device, the linking becomes a frustration in that it is sometimes hard to get back to your place. But that's a small point.Berger's style of writing is engaging, balancing conciseness with informality, and using enough revisiting of ideas in different places in the text to thread ideas throughout the narrative, but not too much to feel repetitive. I loved this just as I loved Glimmer.What a reader will take from this is that questions are important, that the best (and most consistent) innovators, leaders and scientists are typically great at asking questions and not just providing answers. Indeed, Berger makes the case that the question and answer are inextricably linked showing dozens of examples of how the habits of questioning lead to exciting outcomes. He also offers a challenge to anyone involved in education -- which, he'd argue is nearly everyone in this age of change and ongoing learning -- to examine how questions are encouraged and discouraged to shun curiosity. This has enormous implications and, as we see, gets replicated in our businesses and other organizations.If this book does anything for you I hope it gets you to ask better questions and enjoy not always having answers. Taken to heart, the message of paying attention to the questions -- living the questions if you will -- is one that may have profound consequences on your life, work, and learning.

Very much identified with the approach and insights of the Warren Berger. However, one could read the articles on this book or watch the author’s Ted Talk and the core of the book would be revealed. The cost benefit of reading the entire book was not acceptable in my opinion.

I recently took the revised GRE and scored in the 85th percentile on the verbal section (much to my surprise I might add). I used both the Manhattans 500 Essential Words Flash Cards 500 Essential Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards as well as the Manhattan 500 Advanced Words Flash Cards 500 Advanced Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards. After making it through both of these sets of flash cards, I felt like I had a fairly good vocabulary for the GRE and did see many of these words on the test. [By the way, if these cards are out of stock on Amazon, just call Manhattan and buy them over the phone, that's what I had to do. I don't know why they have issues stocking these on Amazon]With this noted, if you do have additional time after finishing these two sets of flash cards, I **HIGHLY RECOMMEND** that you learn the 300 or so most common root words for the GRE as well. Root words are very helpful in deciphering words that you don't know that will come up on the GRE. I found Barron's Essential Words for the GRE book Essential Words for the GRE (Barron's GRE) to be a good source for this, although I'm sure you can find these same root words in the Kaplan or related books as well. And while 300 root words seems like a lot of words to learn, you will probably know some/many of these words already, so fear not! There doesn't seem to be a good set of root word flash cards out there, so I ended up making my own, which was fine. One last note about learning root words: they will also help to strengthen and reinforce the vocab words you already know or are learning from both sets of the Manhattan cards. Learn your root words!If you need help with reading comprehension and verbal practice problems, I used several different books. Here is my preferred list of books, in order:Kaplan New GRE Verbal WorkbookNew GRE Verbal Workbook (Kaplan GRE)While I usually don't like Kaplan as a company (and I have not used any of their other books), I *would* highly recommend using their verbal workbook as there seems to be a good amount of practice problems and they seem similar to what you might see on the GRE.Secondly, I did use the Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook and while I found it useful for it's large amount of practice problems, I found some of the vocab words used as answers were less common that what I saw either on the GRE or on other practice problems and practice tests. With this noted, I still recommend using this book.Finally, I did use Manhattan's Reading Comprehension and Essay GRE Strategy Book as well. Reading Comprehension & Essays GRE Strategy Guide, 3rd Edition (Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides). The best thing I got from this book is learning how to take brief notes while reading over the reading passages on the GRE. Taking notes helps to reinforce what you are reading, a technique not talked about very often by other books. The practice problems in this book are decent, but nothing above that. I do wish they could have put more practice problems in this book (like the Kaplan Verbal Workbook), but there is still useful content here. If you are struggling with the analytical writing section, there are some good tips on this section as well.One final note about both practicing your verbal, but also your math/quantitative: do as many practice tests as you can!!! When you purchase a book (any book I believe) from Manhattan, you get an access code to 6 full length online practice tests. I found these practice tests VERY VERY USEFUL for getting comfortable with the GRE format but also applying all of the verbal and math skills I was practicing. Most of the questions are very similar in difficulty to what you will see and you can review your questions as well. By the way, always review problems you get wrong, this is really important! For Kaplan, you have to purchase the Kaplan Premiere GRE review book to get the disc with access to 10 verbal practice tests and 10 quantitative practice tests. Like the Manhattan, I found these practice tests VERY VERY useful. Do yourself a favor, and get access to both the Manhattan and the Kaplan practice tests It will help immensely!

These are by far the best way for me to learn new vocabulary. I looked at all kinds of different GRE vocab media, including flash card and activity apps, website vocab learning quizzes, and different books which took an incredible variety of approaches, including dictionary-like, thesaurus-like, grouping words by category, and activities getting you to absorb the meaning from context clues. In the end, I got this and the 500 Advanced Words sets because they had everything the books had in an easy-to-sort format. The first thing I did was start yanking out chunks of cards and separating them into three categories: Known, Review, and Study. The Known pile includes cards I don't have to look at again, but serve as a reminder of how much I already know! The Review pile includes cards that had a definition or partial definition I wasn't familiar with, but, for the most part, I knew the word. The Study pile was the scary pile of words I didn't know.Once I got over my fear of the size of the Study pile, I started pulling them out of the pile in groups, reviewing them from the front and the back, and taking advantage of their reminders, helpful hints, synonyms, and root words (all listed conveniently on the back). When I hit a rut in my focus, I began turning the cards into crossword puzzles using online crossword puzzle generators. And once I started being able to see my progress, which the cards make uniquely possible (i.e., my new fourth pile, "Learned" was getting bigger and bigger and eventually was bigger than the "Study" pile), I felt even more encouraged to tackle more of them.Someone told me before I started that you can't really learn vocabulary for the GRE. You either know it or you don't. Yeah, I'm here to tell you that's 100% incorrect. I can't believe how many new words I've learned! And I've got these cards to thank for it. I definitely recommend making the piles I talked about if you tend to get discouraged or anxious...it's a constant visual reminder of exactly where you are and how far you've come. (It does take a while to separate them, but it's worth it.)In short, I highly recommend getting these and the 500 Advanced Words sets in printed (vs. digital) format so that you can sort them. The cards are high quality with great example sentences, comparisons, synonyms, roots, and even silly hints that can help you remember complicated words. Separate out the words you know (go you!), then learn the ones you don't!Study on! We can do it!

As everyone has already stated these cards are great for studying (vocabulary, content-wise). The quality seems very durable, however, the ring is very small and does not fit as many cards as I would hope. Also it seems like the hole-punch area of the card will rip overtime if you use the ring too much.A MAJOR complaint is the fact that cards #1-50 were duplicated! (Someone else mentioned this issue!) So you are not really getting 500 cards, more like 450. #1-50 are A-letter words. Then there is another set of these cards labeled #1-50 again. Then it jumps to #101 for C-letter words. There are NO B-letter cards which is honestly annoying. Luckily the cards are supposed to be correctly numbered so I noticed this immediately. If this is the case contact for a refund and get a new deck because it does not seem to be something everyone is complaining about.... just the lucky few.

Both the content of flashcards and the physical quality are great. The cards come in a durable box along with a small metal ring so you can bind some cards together (each of the cards has a small hole punch in the lower left corner).

If you want to know about John Wayne then this short monograph will tell you about his life, but not who he was. Wayne was a real star that stood apart from his Hollywood peers. I got the impression from reading this book that he was merely another Hollywood actor with typical Hollywood successes and personal failures. His relationships with other stars, such as Maureen O'Hara, Ward Bond, and many other weren't mentioned. Wayne's production company, Batjak, defined much of his movie relationships and philosophies. This book could have been so much more, but then I'm a lifelong John Wayne fan trying to relive the memories.

I was a little disappointed in this brief biography....it mentions his marriages and some movies - but no real insight to John Wayne as a man - his personal trials and tribulations.There's no real insight into the times, or the major progress and changes in film making, or about his family........PERHAPS - the challenge to produce something to 'read in an hour' was too much?

Good rendition of our greatest American actor. More should have been mentioned about his other not so famous films. "Big Jake"was one of those films. Great script, great cast and great acting. Many other films should have been mentioned also. "The Green Berets" comes to mind and many others.

John Wayne was an amazing actor who lived an amazing life. This book did a great job on his early years, but tore him down later. It seems to me the book found found fault and much of his later work. Was he too Concervative for you?

I choose to rate this book as a book that tells all about a great man that leaves nothing to chance!!!!!!!! This is a worthy book that should be read by all that have an worthy outlook on life to be shared by all people!!!!!!!

This was a good way for me to get a glimpse of how JOHN WAYNE'S life and career took shape over the years . It does give one a better understanding of the man and the twist and turns that shaped his life and career!

I knew a little about his background. This short bio filled in the gaps. If you want just the facts and not too in depth his life story this is for you.

Not very impressive. I've been doing a great deal of research to create a KM program for our company. While the book gave some great ideas, to really accomplish what I needed required me to try to find the templates or plans the book suggested. Each time I'd go to the book or the company's website, I was restricted from the material that would really help. This is only available to members for a very steep price. I understand they are a business, but I don't appreciate when a book is used as a pamphlet for the outrageously expensive services being sold. Either write a book or hire a business development team. I was able to find a great deal better information through videos online from NASA, KA-Connect, etc. Lots of good resources available, but, today, when putting together a KM Program, just takes lots of research. Good Luck and don't waste your money on this book.

For those of us that work in KM, you know how confusing it can be to explain. Carla and Cindy have done it again! I purchased multiple copies of the book to share with stakeholders. Comments range from "interesting" to "this makes sense and is articulated very well" (keeping in mind it can be challenging to engage people in the subject when it isn't their job/role).The book is beautifully laid out, easy to comprehend, and complies tacit knowledge of many of the best KM experts in one place. Well done

Good summary of KM. Too basic, if you want it to get insights about planning and implementing KM. Because of that, I liked better the book Designing a Successful KM Strategy: A Guide for the Knowledge Management Professional

This book describes knowledge management in actionable terms. Carla and Cindy have done a great job of linking theory to action to actual case studies. This is a book that a KM Leader could share with business executives who seek outside validation of KM value and impact. It backs up the approaches, methods, and techniques I use when developing KM practices and strategies.

Great book for a start to understanding knowledge management. Great use of examples in every chapter makes the concepts easier to understand.

Excelent for those interested in how to manage knowledge and what are the most recent trends and the best practices implemented by real organizations

This ending was everything I wanted, won't spoil but just take the time to imagine what that entails. Honestly this was a perfect ending to a perfect series. While I won't lie, I could always use more of Emelle and her boys (wouldn't ever turn more down) this ending was wholly satisfying. If you are ever in a state of depression and you need a pick me up this novel is the one for you. It has the romance you yearn for with a sucker punch amount of comedy. I've never laughed harder, Emelle has to be my favorite mc of all times. I can't word this eloquently enough, but if you like RH you won't be disappointed with this one.

Okay so this was a fantastic short! Usually you don’t get your monies worth, but this time you definitely did!So we do meet the guys parents, and not surprisingly Roark’s mom is a high society snob that treats emelle like trash. And she didn’t even remember her housekeepers name! The poor man has spent 50 years working for you and you can’t be bothered to remember his name?!So by now it’s been 3 years since emelle killed the prince. She now has a daughter and is pregnant again. And now she has to deal with a bunch of Cupid’s who already failed their first training program.Did I mention a bugger eating, furry, wart ball flashing troll decided to become a Cupid? Well yeah that happened.Cupid 69 is still mourning Belren aka The Horned Hook so Sev is also doing her portion of the work. We all know how that’s going.All in all this short story was highly entertaining

I so love ❤️ Emil. She was even more hilarious in this novella than in the others. The things she says is always the best and funniest stuff. Like no filter but in the best way. And it doesn’t surprise me that she is super clumsy while pregnant.But the best part was the labor. All cursing of the Genfins and Okot was hilarious. And then she calls the Demon by accident mid push. Oh my word best thing ever. I’ve had two kids and I still don’t know exactly what giving birth looks like and from what felt like since I went all natural I imagine it ain’t pretty. So I feel for the Demon. I really do. Probably ruined it for the rest of his life. 😂I can’t wait to get more from this group. 😍 I love them.

If you fell in love with Emelle and her mates throughout the trilogy that came before this novella, you're definitely going to fall even more in love now. 😍With Valentine's day right around the corner when the story starts, action happens pretty quick. We get to see even more of the love that Emelle and her mates share. There are plenty of your typical Emelle moments to keep us on our toes but overall I loved this story. The storyline was solid, stayed true to previous events and the ending was exactly what I didn't know I needed.

Raven Kennedy is a genius! Thank you for giving us a glimpse of the happy ever after.Just like in the other 3 books this novella is full of sweet moments, moments that have you laughing like a loon in public & more of Emelle's "genius" ideas. It's really nice to see Emelle coming along as a character. While she's certainly matured, all of her best characteristics are still present - her well neaning crazy ideas, the no filter & her need to be liked by all while not really giving a crap. Her mates are the same - in love & going a little insane but it warmed my heart to see how all her guys now function as a unit. They've truly built a family and I loved every word!

I adore this story so much, it's difficult to express properly in words. The way that Raven Kennedy crafts her characters and the worlds around them are simply perfect. I will never get enough of this world she's created and can only hope that she's far from done with it no matter the branch it takes. This adorable novella is simply icing on the cake.

This is one of those series that stay with you after you are done reading it and wonder what happened next. Well, I had such an amazing time reading their Next and how everything turn out for E and her guys. I couldn’t stop laughing on the last chapter and was so happy for E and her family. Thank you for such a great novella.

Gosh, woooowwww!!! This novella is everything!!!! I love Emelle so soo so super much and Ronak, Okot, Evert, and Sylred are amazing!!! I loved this Valentine’s Day novella! What a treat! Now I just want more of them and everyone else!!! I love this series! What a cupidly super good book! It’s a must read series!

As a drum teacher for more than 40 years, I have found the "Berklee Jazz Drums" book to be a comprehensive guide for my intermediate to advanced students. If you or your students are well prepared with rudiments and reading chops you would do very well working your way through this method book. Of particular note is the discography of "must know" tunes. I would include the "Berklee Jazz Drums" among every drummer's "biblical" texts: Stone's "Stick Control", Reed's "Syncopation", and the Chapin "Advanced Techniques".
