About the Author

RICHARD FREEMAN has been a student and practitioner of yoga since 1968. He is one of the first students of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to be certified in the Ashtanga tradition and teaches workshops and seminars on yoga asana, philosophy, pranayama, and meditation throughout the world. Richard draws from his background in philosophy and years of study in SE Asia to present an interlinking of traditions: Sanskrit studies, Hatha and Tantric Yoga, Sufism, and Buddhism, to bring out a direct experience of the internal methods and forms common to a broad spectrum of traditions. He is the author of The Mirror of Yoga and has also produced a number of videos and audio recordings on yoga, yoga philosophy, and chanting. When not traveling, he and his wife, Mary Taylor, split their time between Colorado and Thailand, where they also teach. MARY TAYLOR began studying yoga in 1972 and became an avid Ashtanga practitioner in 1987 after her first trip to Mysore, India, to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. She is the cofounder, with Richard Freeman, of the Yoga Workshop, in Boulder, Colorado, which they started 1988. Mary travels and teaches throughout the world both with Richard and on her own. In addition to teaching Ashtanga yoga, Mary works closely with programs focus on bringing contemplative and yoga practices into the health care system for integrative therapies and self care, and she is active in Donna Karan's Urban Zen Foundation.

Love this book. I have practiced Ashtanga for 22 years and I am enjoying reading more on the small nuances rather than on the asana's themselves. There is so much unseen in a yoga practice and this book brings that to the forefront.

The "theoretical" part is definitely what makes this special book even more special and uinique. The "asana" part is also amazing, though the vinyasa count for some poses is quite unorthodox. Great book overall, and a must have for keen Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga practitioners.

Richard Freeman is a wonderful teacher and this book didn't disappoint me. I have a lot of yoga books and this will fit nicely into my library.

Mr. Freeman is a master of communication and he does a great job in explaining the essence of yoga and how to apply it .

I'm a yoga instructor and this book is amazing! I am constantly finding material to use in my classes. It's an easy read and very informative.

At almost 900 pages of text and over 200 pages of ancillary material this is a monument for the ages. Ramachandra Guha is arguably one of the more important Indian historians of his generation in the estimation of many. He has combed through the massive volumes of Gandhi's writings, endless archives and newly available papers. His goal was nothing less than to document all of Gandhi's public and private life from his return to India in 1914 to his death in 1948.Gandhi's four interconnecting principles were to gain Indian independence, promote Hindu-Muslim unity, end untouchability, and achieve economic self reliance. To meet these goals Gandhi staged highly effective forms of political protest such as his march to the sea (in defiance of the British salt tax) and famed fasts (to stop interfaith violence). In the end foreign rule was overcome, but he was unable to prevent mass killings and partition of the subcontinent. His assassination by a Hindu nationalist would foretell of future troubles.Guha is an unabashed admirer of Gandhi, if not entirely uncritical of all he did. He sees Gandhi as the foremost figure in modern Indian history, and a highly influential figure across the world stage. This is not a difficult argument to make, and Guha does it with great conviction. The writing is fluid and unhindered by an overly academic style. The most obvious critique of his analysis is the representation of Gandhi as a liberal or even a radical. Gandhi was a reformer in many areas, but in most cases he was guided by conservative values and religious beliefs.Gandhi's rejection of western industrialism and embrace of agrarian decentralization now seem quaint and rooted in the 19th century. He was greatly influenced by Tolstoy's faith based pacifism, anti-colonialism and opposition to private land ownership. Homespun cloth and village councils were a challenge to British economic and political repression, but would not be the way of the future. In the debate with Ambedkar over the untouchables, Guha makes a different case than Arundhati Roy, who sees Gandhi as a reactionary on caste issues.Guha covers Gandhi's private life also, although somewhat superficially. In terms of an interesting psychological subject Gandhi ranks near the top. Oddly, he appears two dimensional and conventional in this portrait. Guha doesn't shy away from controversial aspects of Gandhi's celibacy experiments, such as sleeping naked with teenage relatives to test his purity. As with an extramarital dalliance with feminist Saraladevi Chaudhurani, Guha concludes nothing untoward occurred. Gandhi, both man and milieu, seem distant and difficult to fathom.Ultimately this book could have benefited from a shorter format and a more incisive look at Gandhi the politician. Guha proposes Gandhi as an antidote to the fundamentalism and intolerance that challenged India since the turn of the millennium. In doing so he sacrifices a level of insight into the traditionalist worldview Gandhi used to mobilize the rural masses. Although Guha notes the urban and middle class makeup of other nationalist and revolutionary groups, he doesn't see this as a significant lens to examine the social context of Gandhi's movement.

In this much-anticipated second part of the biography, Guha provides a balanced, well-researched and thorough narrative of one of modern worlds greatest leaders. The sheer clarity with which Guha pens this narrative makes this 1000+ page (including almost 100 pages of index and another 90 pages on notes) tome read like a fast-paced novel.The book, however, is not a glorification - in fact, the balanced approach (clearly detailing the evolution of moral, religious and what now seems as completely strange beliefs) amplifies a reader's admiration of Gandhi's pursuit of self-improvement while simultaneously engaged in leading millions to self-rule.Perhaps the biggest contribution of this biography is 2 chapters in the first third of the book that provides a more detailed look at the personal evolution of Gandhi - particularly his views on religion and what one can glean from his own reactions to his serialized autobiography. The sections that discuss the environment leading to the independence, particularly the deepening sense of separatism and selfishness of leaders arguing for Pakistan will sadden anyone aware of the millions of lives lost and displaced in the partition. On a macro level, this is a book that is an excellent case study on political strategy - revolution v/s reactionary v/s incremental pragmatism.The factual narrative of each of the key events in each year, every key meeting, correspondence, fast, march, arrest, etc is in itself a fascinating and informative read. However, one also gets to appreciate the political genius of Gandhi (opportunism, perhaps in some cases and maybe even luck - such as Tilak's early death), organizational (Congress) machinations, and various tactics leaders adopt jostling for better positions in the party's platform. The genesis and crystallization of the Hindu-Muslim relation (or lack of it) that has defined much of the subcontinent's modern history is also clearly captured in this biography - albeit from the vantage point from Gandhi. Gandhi's attempts in forging (or forcing his view of amity) a Hindu-Muslim unity while challenging some of the then-systemic biases within Hinduism is also an informative read and provides a much richer context to appreciate and judge the current day politics. The range of reactions from various key leaders to Gandhi's efforts can still be seen in almost any discussion of the politics in the sub-continent.Just as in the first part of the biography, one gets to learn more about the personal side of Gandhi - particularly his relationship with his sons and wife, a bizarre experiment involving his grand-niece , and views on sexuality (none of which are candidates to deify Gandhi as a role model in family life). It is this astounding dichotomy of fighting for freedom for the masses but keeping the ones devoted to him in strict "Law Giver" mode that will puzzle readers. A reader also learns about the key roles of some of Gandhi's assistants and a host of influential leaders from various backgrounds that unfortunately never made it through popular recounting of India's independence struggle).For the casual reader of Indian history, the wide cast of characters and their import, will be difficult to follow along - However, as a remarkable study of an individuals evolution (moral, philosophical, political) and as a narrative on the most formative years of India, this biography is a must-read.

Although 10 years have passed, this Goldberg's book is both imformative and scarry as hell. While the Obama years attenuated the impact of whacky religeous schemes, the Trump era has added gasoline to the embers of the Christian Right's attempt at a 21st century "Burn Over."MIchell's prose is evenly paced an non-strident and uses factual statements from Christian writers and resources to make the case against the rise of the Christian Right and the multitude of megachurch snake oil schemes to make her point. Well done

Excellent exploration of Christian nationalism, a movement that wants to undermine pluralism, freedom of speech, expression, and sexuality, and our secular liberal democracy. Wonderfully written, it's timely look at how Christian nationalists have taken over the GOP as well. Though written during the Bush administration, this book has much to offer since we're still facing the threat of Christian nationalism.

Kingdom Coming is a political/social book about the rise of the Religious Right and its tenacious efforts to change the law of the land and sway public opinion over to its side. Once considered a group of radicals whose ideas were too extreme to worry about, the various organizations and individuals aligned with the Religious Right have succeeded to a far greater extent than anyone imagined. How the different components of the Religious Right managed to accomplish this feat is the main subject of this book; complete with methodology exposed, tactics revealed, and strategies examined.Probably the greatest concern to Goldberg and others like her is the Religious Right's use of deceptive tactics to sway the public. The use of reason was getting them nowhere, so they decided in the late 1980's to adopt other strategies to persuade the public over to their side. Running "stealth" election campaigns (not letting the public know a trained candidate's true agenda until after the election), finding and/or training scientists and PhD's to support and give credence to the Religious Right cause, conducting biased studies, etc., are all well- known and well- documented instances of unethical persuasion. Since many of the ideas of the members of the radical Religious Right were anti- liberty, unreasonable, and often illogical, its members decided to turn to the next level and seek out highly educated individuals who were sympathetic to the cause. Once the public heard that several people with Ph.D's were supporting Religious Right ideologies, the credibility of their claims would be strengthened and more people would be convinced to accept them. This strategy was key to the growing influence of Religious Right dogma, and Goldberg spends considerable time talking about these and other deceptive tactics used by these people in their attempts to move the United States closer to theocracy.Goldberg successfully exposes many of the tactics used by the Religious Right and while many of them are well- known, they are often surprising for their obvious level of deceit. One is the concept of "Intelligent Design". There was no such term in the past- it was created by the members of the Religious Right for the sole purpose of introducing creationism into the school classrooms. Since the radicals knew they would never get away with inserting religious dogma into the science textbooks, they decided instead to disguise their ideas as science. By then creating a term like "Intelligent Design", they were able to give the idea scientific clout; making it sound like an official doctrine of science that, therefore, should be included in school textbooks. It really is a clever strategy, if you think about it. It's an act of complete and total deception and it ranks right up there with some of the better political strategies of recent history.I like the way Goldberg wrote this book. Her approach is dead- on and her writing is highly effective. She even manages to write in a respectful way when she talks about some of these adversaries- an admirable feat, considering the use of deception so common in the movement's political strategies. She is obviously very concerned about the destruction of basic liberties and civil rights that will invariably occur if the ideals of the Religious Right really do become law. Legalized abortion is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many, many other areas where the Religious Right wants to stick its collective nose, and in almost every instance, personal liberty would be tossed to the wayside in favor of strict religious dogma.Overall, Kingdom Coming is a very good political book about one of the most critical social issues of our time. The Religious Right and its many members and organizations may not ever succeed at making the United States government an all- out theocracy. But its ability to chip away at personal freedom should be viewed with concern by all Americans. Like Goldberg states plainly, the American way of life and Constitutional guarantees are at stake. Once a few rights have vanished, the road will be paved for further erosion of basic liberties as the nation inches closer and closer to religions/fascist- style of government rule.

Beginning to read this book I braced myself for a biased rant against Christianity, however the sources and references given made it an even more disturbing read. A very good book. Great plot. Unfortunately, the previous book really needs to have been read to fully appreciate this one. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book and will read the next one. Flynn does a great job humanizing his characters and outing the corrupt politicians ubiquitous pursuit of power. The main story is about a bunch of cowardly Muslims who attack innocent people to make themselves seem righteous in their own eyes. The hero pursues them and they die. There are a lot of side stories in this book as well and a couple of them didn't really get wrapped up very well, but overall very good book.

Been reading the entire Mitch Rapp series. As soon as I approach the last pages of one I am already ordering the next! This series gets better and better. (Unfortunately, author Vince Flynn, has passed away from cancer. He was definitely taken away from us way too soon.) Therefore, I have finished this novel and the final Flynn novel, "The Last Man". Sadly, especially after "The Last Man", I want more of Mitch Rapp. Mr. Flynn's friend will be taking over the series and a new Mitch Rapp novel is scheduled for September(?). I only hope that this new author can keep the series going with the flair that Mr. Flynn had.Awesome series, great storylines, real-to-life theories, excellent characters, believable with a dusting of fiction...

Vince Flynn is one of my favorite authors. Sad he died so young. Mitch Rapp will win your heart if your a man or woman. Irene Kennedy is the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and is like a sister to Mitch instead of his BOSS. Every book can stand on its own. I have read several not in order and found "Kill Shot" and really enjoyed a very young Mitch. A friend going through chemo has thanked me for suggesting Flynn's books while he's in the hospital for hours. Try them...I have read "Transfer of Power" twice.

Very good writing and storyline but that's exactly what we've come to expect and receive from Vince Flynn. He never disappoints. I got a little weary of the Nash character, though. Hopefully, we're done with him as a major player.Though a standalone book, this is also a sequel to the previous book. I don't care for that feature and it's the only two books in the Rapp series done that way so rest easy - that's over now.

Can't think of anything about this book I like. What I dislike the most is the nauseating diatribe for the far right view. Also disliked the shallow plot. Not a good book. In fact, it is Flynn's worst, in my opinion.

Book number 13 of a 18 book action mystery series in the Mitch Rapp universe, chronologically. I read the excellently bound and printed large format MMPB. There will be more in the series as the family has hired a new writer.A terrorist cell has made it into the USA and has a plan. Mitch Rapp and the gang are desperately trying ti catch up to them. The story goes on from there.My rule is that if a book makes me stay up at night to finish it, it is a five star book.

This is a reread for me. I'm reading some books in the series before SURVIVOR comes out next week. I think most women would love to love a man like Mitch who is the top CIA operative. He's a man's man and a real catch for women.This novel dealt with terrorists from al-Qaeda. Three of them manage to kill about 200 Americans. Mitch has to not only deal with terrorists and politicians, but traitors too. Then his best friend's daughter is kidnapped by two of the terrorists and Mike Nash wants to trade his life for his daughter's. Old Hurley is still in Mitche's life and business, even though he is officially retired. Great read. I highly recommend everything Vince Flynn has ever written.

Great story. A lot of characters to keep track of but well worth the time. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. There was a short story continuation from the previous book in the series. Mitch Rapp made quick work of that issue...Now terrorists are training in South America for there big attack on America. Their plans partially succeed but now three of them are on the run in heartland. There is politics, agency infighting and lots more in this book.

I loved Kayla and Dane's story! Kayla was a famous singer who took time off from her career because her father was dying. She became reacquainted with Dane who had attended school with her. The book was one of renewing old acquaintances, allowing God to work on one's life, and finding one's true love! Highly recommend this book!

Kayla is in a bad place, spiritually fighting against God, at the beginning. However, when she gets bad news about her dadâ€™s health, she runs home to be with him, where she meets Dane. She is drawn to his shop, looking for a gift, and finds herself fascinated with him and his pottery. This book drew me in and kept me reading, fascinated with the story; and by the end, I found myself sighing, â€œAhhh!â€ I would recommend it for a good Christian romance story!

A story of second chances, both for the prodigal child, as well as the "boy next door." Kayla Mac is a superstar, a musician taking the world by storm. She is also a child of God, and of earthly parents who are none too fond of the lifestyle she is living, and the choices she has made. Kayla comes home from her music tour after receiving some disturbing news from her mom. Her dad, who has always been her champion, is happy to see her, but she's not certain about her mom's feelings about her visit. Kayla escapes from the house into the potter's studio of Dane, a hometown "boy next door" kind of guy she went to high school with, but doesn't really remember. Their resulting relationship has highs and lows, fits and starts. I kind of feel like Dane's character is a bit too easy going, and a bit too ready to accept Kayla into his life, flaws and all. I think a bit more tension and struggle in that relationship, particularly from Dane's perspective would truly make this a 5 star book. I definitely enjoyed the book, and would welcome a sequel to this story.

This is a great story about second chances. It was a good easy read with great Christian values and morals. I enjoyed the authors style of writing. Some people may call it preachy but we as true Christians should never get tired of scripture and the victory that we can have serving the Lord. The problem with our world today is that we don't hear enough scripture. I could personally relate to Kayla, heroine, as I also rebelled against my parents and their strict Christian values. My life was almost destroyed but a loving Savior was merciful enough to give me a second chance.

I absolutely loved The Homecoming! This was actually my second time reading the book and I found that I enjoyed it just as much this time. Juliette Duncan's heartwarming story reminded me of God's truth in so many ways. Kayla had strayed from God and His love, seeking happiness in the world by becoming a popular musical artist and even dating a married man. Upon receiving a call about her dad's declining health, she returned to her family and her small home town to be there for her father. Feeling completely out of place and most unworthy to even be in her parents' home, she had an unexpected reunion with Dane, who had harbored a crush on Kayla since he was a boy. She barely remembered him from school, but he vividly remembered her. Having strayed from the Gospel himself during his time in the Marines, Dane nearly lost his leg in a terrible fight that resulted from his ungodly lifestyle. Afterwards, God did a marvelous work in Dane's life and he was now living completely for Him and serving Him in every possible way. Dane used his talents as a potter to show Kayla, and the teen boys in his after school church group, how God can remove the impurities from each of us and make us stronger for HIm. It took her father's illness to bring her back home, but Kayla began to open her heart up to God's love once again, and eventually asked Jesus to save her and remove the impurities of her heart. She found a new love for God and also for Dane and her family and finally discovered that her true happiness was only found in Him. The Homecoming receives my highest recommendation.

Juliette Duncan has written an excellent story about God's willingness to forgive anyone who truly repents and receives his love. Since Dane is a potter there are many references to God as the Potter. The characters are well drawn. The story follows Kayla, her family's black sheep, who returns home (despite the censure she knows she will face) when she learns her beloved earthly father is very ill. Slowly she opens her heart. If you are looking for an excellenet Christian book, be sure you read the Homecoming.

A beautiful story of redemption. A lump of clay in the hands of the Master Potter becomes a magnificent vessel of honor. Kayla was a misguided woman who have herself to selfish desires and wasteful living trying to find joy and fulfillment. When her father's cancer takes her back home to her godly roots, she finally comes to understand her Heavenly Father's love. I can't say enough to tell how God's love is expressed in this book. Thank you, Juliette for this book of redemption.

Kayla and Daneâ€™s story is truly amazing. Kayla has lived a life that her family and friends didnâ€™t approve of. When her father gets sick her life will change. The way Dane helped her will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. The characters in this story are very special people. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

About the Author

Wayne R. Archer is the William D. Hussey Professor at the Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. He is Executive Director of the Bergstrom Center for Real Estate Studies. He received a Masters in economics from Wichita State University (1968) and a Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University (1974). He has been a faculty member at the University of Florida since 1971. From 1979 through 1981, he served as a visiting researcher at the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation. His research publications include articles on office markets, house price indices, mortgage prepayment, mortgage pricing, and mortgage default risk. Professor Archer is a member of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, where he has served on the board of directors, and also is a member of the American Real Estate Society. He served on the editorial board of Real Estate Economics. He is a Fellow of the Homer Hoyt Institute. Professor Archer has worked in industry education throughout his academic career, including service as the educational consultant to the Florida Real Estate Commission from 1985 to 1999. Among additional roles, he served as a regular faculty member in programs of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, in the Institute of Financial Education affiliated with the U.S. League of Savings and Loan Associations, and, more recently, with Freddie Mac. However, it looks like the book has been dropped on the floor multiple times before being shipped. I had to double check thinking I mistakenly ordered the used version. Nope, its supposed to be new. Mine just looks used and abused.

It was fine, I rented mine and it came with highlights in it from a previous owner. I also found a typo on page 195 under â€œeffective gross incomeâ€

A good book. I needed it for school. Taught me a lot about real estate!

This has to be one of the best travelogs I have ever read. The writing style is very witty and informative. I would put Jim Malusa right up there with Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson. His wit with metaphors is fantastic. Too bad he hasn't written more. As for the two star review because the trips to the lowest places on earth did not constitute a real adventure, you have to be kidding. Most Americans would be scared to death to ride a bike from Moscow to the Caspian Sea or to Djibouti. Most of these places are well off the beaten track, without a lot of services and often interacting with locals that have never seen or a very unaccustomed to tourists. That is not a real adventure? Malusa adds a fair amount of spicy factoids and historical interest items but in a way you are not conscious you are getting a lesson. He did some homework on these places before he left and not just where are the best tourist attractions. The lessons are nicely woven into to the present conditions and culture of the places he visits. Along that line he is also a biologist or naturalist of some sort and his descriptions of natural aspects of the adventures are interesting without being preachy or too academic. He does sometimes use names for species without a lot of description so sometimes if you aren't familiar with the species by name you have a hard time picturing what he is talking about but, not always. If you are tuned into the natural world to that level you will get that much more out of it. But that is a very minor criticism.Jim Malusa please think up some other wacky adventure on your bike to write about, preferably in some cultures as different as possible from the USA. God willing!

He presents an irresistible target as he pedals to the lowest points on six continents. His book, Into Thick Air, is equally hard to pass up.People seem to lie in wait for Jim. An Afar man who teaches English in Djibouti, an Australian family that lives in a â€œdust bowl shack with whip snakes in the outhouse and a pedal radio for communications,â€ and a Russian wedding party filling the only cafÃ© in town, all ambush him and force their hospitality, food, water pipes, and drinks on him. The drinks often contain alcohol, which both delays him and slows his progress when he finally wobbles away. Jim faces many obstacles in his travels--missing his young family, battling headwinds, and struggling up hills--but only fails at one: resisting the temptation to stop and talk. And eat. And drink.A Jordanian family welcomes the American bicyclist passing their house. They show him every photograph they own, feed him goat soup, dress him in local clothing, entertain him with card games, and give him breakfast after he spends the night. I haven't finished this yet, but it is a fairly good read. I had just finished reading "Miles From Nowhere" by Barbara Savage, "Just Ride" by Grant Petersen, and "Two Wheels and a Map" by Bob Neubauer, which were all fantastic reads! I probably blazed through those in about a month, so I may have hit the ceiling in terms of cycling books. I will say that the book is good so far, but as far as world travel cycling literature goes, the book "Miles From Nowhere" is a cut above the fray.

This is a very enjoyable and well-written book about bicycling and culture. If you enjoy cycling this is a must read. If you know nothing about cycling this is still a great book to enjoy. Malusa's wit and perspective are unique and very readable. He has a open personality and shows that by dropping expectations one can remain fully open to the pleasures and lessons available from traveling to unexpected places. I cannot recommend it enough. Pull up a chair and enjoy this excellent book!

I'm just finishing off reading Into Thick Air,I enjoyed every page of it. Jim's phrasing of his experiences makes you smile frequently, his descriptions of the land and people are lively, almost wished he had written a book per trip so he could write in more detail. I just found the photos he took on these trips on his flicker website, so if you get the book enjoy these pictures as you read along, they add a lot to the story! I think anyone who likes travel stories will enjoy this book.

I'd like Jim Malusa to write another book. His writing is super, as is his insight into the cultures he immerses himself in. I read this book on my iPad and often jumped to Maps to follow Jim along as he traveled. What amazing travels!

This is a well-written and warm account of several bicycle adventure tours into the lowest points on Earth. It is saved from being just another bike adventure book by Jim Malusa's humor and his deftly woven interplay between his misadventures and his deep knowledge of the geology and ecology of the areas he travels through.
