As a mom, I made sure my four kids read this book. The chapters were short. It was interesting and it was written for boys as well as girls. But recently I bought this book for my 88 year old mother. Although she used to be an avid reader, most books are too complex now. There are too many characters, and the story line is usually too complex. But this book really was perfect. George never talks down to the reader, so the stories never seemed childish. Mom not only enjoyed reading, she gained insight on the different animals and wanted to discuss them! This book transcends any gender or age boundaries.

I have it 4 stars instead of 5 because when Amazon sent it to my Kindle, words were strung together and some words were symbols. Pictures were broken up as well so very hard to read.

Love this author and this book. It's very simple to understand and keeps my little people interested and laughing.

My daughter has this book and has always enjoyed it. Bought it for a friend's grandson, because he's really into animals.

This Newbery-winner whose recognized books (My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves) I have read and appreciated greatly, has something very different here. Each chapter is a vignette about one or more of the wild animals that have come into her home for raising. There are some interesting and fascinating goings-on, some animals one wouldn't normally think of as domestic, and lots of good basic scientific information about a number of them. The crows alone are much more dynamic than one would have reason to expect. This is accessible, completely pleasurable for a reader from chapter books on up. For a youngster whose attention span is more suited toward these short stories/chapters, a fun read about animals, family, freedom, wild vs. domestic, and so on. Recommended warmly.

I bought this book because I knew that it included a chapter on a pet owl, and we were expecting to get an owl soon for my daughter. The whole thing was charming. I envy how she grew up surrounded by animal life, and how her kids too made every kind of animal, wild and domestic, part of their lives.

The series Chains, Forge, and Ashes by Laurie Halse Anderson were all terrific books according to my 12 year old grandson. He is studying American history this year, and once he read Chains couldn't wait to read the other two. After he read them, his history teacher said she would give extra credit to anyone who read any of these books. She was surprised and pleased that he had read them already. So he will get lots of extra credit for reading all three and he did it just because he really enjoyed them.

This historical novel, the last of the trilogy, shows the ending of the Revolutionary War and reunites the characters. It is beautifully written, an exciting page-turner, a flowering romance, and a descriptive view of the chaos of war. The Appendix holds a wealth of historical information. As a word lover, I enjoyed the Glossary. I hope middle graders and their teachers will enjoy reading ASHES as much as I did and gain insights and knowledge about this great historical event that are not sugar-coated and that paint slavery for what it was, a stain on our democracy.

These three books, Chains, Forge, and Ashes, tell the stories about our Revolution than are seldom heard but which were not uncommon. The stories are often cruel and uncomfortable to hear, but are necessary for us to heed and to learn from.Although written with Young Adults in mind; I am a senior citizen and I very much enjoyed these superbly-written books and recommend them to all.

This was a wonderful ending to the trilogy of books about two slaves fighting a war for their freedom during the American Revolution. It follows two young slaves Curzon and a girl he affectionately calls Country. It is a book that calls into question how blurry the lines were during this war. It also calls into question the irony that many were fighting for their "freedom" from the British when many people fighting owned slaves or were fighting alongside those that didn't have "freedom". As a slave it was hard to tell who to fight with or what they were fighting for. Very thought provoking and well written two needful book for middle schoolers and beyond.

This is the final book in the: "Seeds of America" series. Set in 1781 and narrated by Isabel; Anderson getsup close and personal having Isabel and Curzon right in the middle of the final confrontation between the Britishand Rebel armies.I highly recommend the reading the entire series; especially for fans of the Tony Award winning musical: "Hamilton."Another novel to address this issue is: Octavian of Nothing.

Such a wonderful third book to a tremendous series about the Revolutionary war as seen through the eyes of Slaves caught up in the misery and suspense of surviving the war. Wonderful way to teach about the experience of persons of color, their thoughts, hopes and fears for social studies.

The author helps us see the beginnings of this country and the Revolutionary war from the perspective of the slaves that were being sold, kept and forced to give up their freedom for the betterment of their owners in light of war's objective of gaining freedom from Britain.

The final book in the Seeds of America trilogy was well worth the wait. Laurie Halse Anderson takes us back to the Revolutionary War days as America fought for its freedom. I loved meeting up with Isabel and Curzon as they searched for their freedom and Ruth. It was like catching up with old friends as Isabel and Curzon fight for freedom and peace within their own hearts.A perfect ending to the trilogy, but I already miss them and their journey!

Excellent books! I read all three. You finish the one and you want t know what happen in the second and then in the third one. Is a sensual love story with a lot of action in between but not caused only by the sex scenes. Great book that I highly recommend them!
