While I find my work to be meaningful, the day to day of it was losing meaning for me.As I read the book, I identified with the struggle that started this journey for Shawn, the author. He revealed how he created the meaning in his life that was missing at the end of his career as a defense attorney. He started something else, not a career, but a “vocation”. That term has significance and means more than work. He describes this in the book and offers advice on how to find it.Several things spoke to me and have created changes in my life in a short time.I realized that as a part owner of a small business, the stuff to create purpose and meaning was right in front of me. There is a whole community of people and their families that are directly affected by the direction we take as a business. Shawn had a deep sense of this as his business was starting and built it feeling and knowing this. That may not be how our business was built, but it does not mean that we cannot change it with this in mind. He gives guidance on how he did it and how others can as well.I sat in two meetings over the last two days and found myself repeating many of the things he details in the book.The first meeting was one with the leaders in our organization trying to determine filter out the main goals we wanted to achieve over the next 1-3 years. It started with a SWOT analysis. These are the types of meetings that were making work lose meaning for me.This time, however, as I read through the SWOT from our employees, I could see a theme. Many of the weaknesses could be explained by people who viewed their jobs as work with no sense of vocation.If we created a community (or sense of “kinship” as Shawn calls it) at work centered around a vocation and service, if we adopted the “open book” principles, if we went back to just talking to everyone around us with “gemba walks” instead of thinking about using surveys almost all of those weaknesses would be addressed. I know this would not be a panacea, and there will always be issues to work on, but if we could do these things, the atmosphere that we work on these issues would be a better one.The second meeting brought up an issue about how we should negotiate terms on a particular venture. In essence, it was about how much profit should we pursue on the venture. The thought paradigm that Shawn mentions many have is “as much as you can”. But, he talks about how important getting the “right price” or a “fair price” is in the practice of the brothers at Assumption Abbey and I took it to heart as we discussed the issue at the meeting. This is not an altruisitic concept, but rather a sustainability concept.I look forward to where this takes me and our small business and am glad this book came to me when it did.

Interesting to see what you can salvage from some old stuff, but unless you're a real DIY gadgeter most of it is pretty useless. Wold have been great if it also had some projects that you could build with the stuff you scrapped

Disappointed, I was looking for more of a salvage "crash" book, (i.e. laser diodes can be found in...) rather than a primer in salvage.

Book was delivered on time; no complains.

My son was building a beam robot from scavenged parts really need something to help him identify parts on a circuit boards and described how they could be used. This book seems to limit itself to the most readily identified parts (ie motors and gears) and nothing more complicated.

the author apparently has fun takin things apart. was fun read, most things in here i was already aware of, but i think its worth the money. if yer a parent with a kid that loves to take things apart, with supervision, this would be a good book for a young "mad scientist".

If you want to understand how everyday electronics are assembled this is the book for you. I love how the author explains what each item will contain that can be reused elsewhere. I was pleasantly surprised in some to the selections. He also explains the safety measures to take so that it will be fun and entertaining without danger. Kindergarten-Grade 3–In this fictionalized version of how the composer wrote his "Piano Concerto no. 17 in G Major," Mozart is facing a case of writer's block and a looming deadline. His pet starling begins to sing and the notes provide a fine melody. When the young man opens her cage, she flies out. He looks for her all over the city but doesn't find her. However, the sounds of the streets give him additional inspiration so that he can complete the piece and perform it as planned. During the concert, Miss Bimms hears the music and flies to the theater where she is reunited with her owner. Done in gouache, acrylic, and colored pencil, the sepia-toned illustrations provide beautifully detailed glimpses of Vienna and the concert hall. Unfortunately, Mozart is shown with a round head, big eyes, and wild hair–slightly stylized features that give him the appearance of a Cabbage Patch doll. There is a silliness about the story that seems to detract from the man and his talent. In an author's note, Costanza indicates the source for his ideas. It's a shame that the fantasy is never balanced with the biographical facts kids will crave, and the narrative feels somewhat stiff. Despite that, Costanza is an illustrator to watch. Blending the burnished palette and twirling energy of Raul Colon, the softness of Leonid Gore, and a sense of fun that trills to a melody all its own, his paintings offer an ingenious view of eighteenth-century Vienna. Very nice.

Very nice book. We plan on keeping it for years to come. Shipped out really fast and the condition of the book was excellent!

As a musicologist and professional musician, I adored this charming book. There is some possibility that indeed the pet bird did in fact sing something like this melody for the concerto in question (#17 in G for piano and orchestra, third movement), according to Mozart's own catalogue. That isn't what's important. What IS important is that the book is charming and that my 4 year old LOVED it. Of course, I sang Ms. Bims' melody for her (a CD would be good for non-musicians) and then we listened to the movement of the concerto together. My daughter now adores, ADORES, Mozart, having played other tunes for her as well and other whole pieces. She still loves to sing "Miss Bims' melody!"

I love this book and so do my kids. It has a clever and charming storyline that weaves in a child's first look at a musical score, a few landmarks of 18th century Vienna, the excitement of a musical premiere, the effort of creating and composing. But mostly it's a fun tale beautifully illustrated with an affectionate characterization of Mozart that completely delights children. It is a wonderful book in every respect. I wish there were a whole series from this author/illustrator bringing other composers to life for this age group.

My son who is 6 years old says, "You should get it!".This beautiful story has inspired my son to listen for music in the city as we go through our day. He often wonders aloud how Mozart would use a certain sound(like say for instance, our city bus) if Mozart was composing a new piece of music. We love this story.

The reader is immediately taken into the world of Mozart, in a whimsical, but no less daunting little adventure in which we see fabulous images which seem to have movement all their own, via the lofty, vibrant, and rich illustrations. The written content is light, and its brevity means that it will not detract from the beautifully executed drawings. By way of the luscious illustrations, the tale practically tells itself, the script being an underlying bass line, holding up the pace of the story. It is a great book to read to someone, or to be read alone--for children AND adults.

This is a beautifully illustrated story, introducing the reader not only to details of Mozart's life but to scenes of old Vienna. The story itself is moderately captivating but it could serve as a useful tool in creating interest in classical composers and seeing them as real people.

Short essays from a variety of sources provide diverse perspective, but actually there's a lot of redundancy among selections and essays lawyers may well have already seen. I'm afraid I can't recommend this book, as I believe it's way overpriced for the retread. And the introduction recommends reading the essays or sections "as needed" and mark up the book as a "workbook": problem is the landscape format makes it clumsy to handle in that way. This would have been better issued in a pocket-book format with margins or additional blank pages suitable for jotting notes & ideas as they occur to the reader.

Realistic, dont think so much to buy this book, just BUYYYYY. I strongly recommend... when you finish to read it you will feel very confident about your practice
