Alas, the Tavern on the Green is no more, but for those of us who would like to see what it was like, this book is for you. The pictures are great. Even friends from New York, came to my house and read it in the evening. That should tell it all. There are recipes in there, too, if one is fond of recreating an evening to remember at the dinner table. People who enjoy cooking would enjoy getting this book, perhaps for a gift to add to their library.

This book outlines the history of this great New York landmark in addition to the characters that made the restaurant special and charming. The recipes allow you to recreate the same dishes at home. This book will forever be in my collection and makes a great gift for anyone who is a collector of fine cook books.

The photos were fabulous ! It brought back wonderful memories for me, so I bought it for my sister as well. She loved it ! â€¦such great memories of New York, the restaurant, and the best recipes everâ€¦.It's not easy to modify restaurant recipes to family size ones and have them taste exactly the same. It was lovely that the family mentioned the history behind the restaurant as well. I have tried many of the recipes and they were as great as I had remembered which isn't easy. My family is from New England and the Crab Cakes recipe, is one of the best I have found. Bon Appetit !

I live diagonally across the United States from NYC, but enjoyed dining at Tavern on the Green when I was in graduate school on the East Coast. I was sad to read that the restaurant had closed, and reveled in finding this lovely cookbook in the bookstore one day. OMG! After looking at it in the store, I just had to have it! So, raced home to order it through Amazon.I am a cookbook collector, and a traveling Foodie, who likes "clean" food (meaning no chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, etc.). I also am interested in historical cookbooks which capture an era's best dishes. This cookbook is what I call "solid", meaning that it is filled with recipes which allow one to cook cleanly with natural ingredients, recipes that all sound delicious, and which represent the Tavern on the Green's era with most everyone's favorite dishes. No odd dishes with hard-to-find ingredients.An added plus is that the recipes in the Tavern on the Green cookbook do not look hard to execute, and execute well. The recipes look fairly straightforward, and pretty healthy. This cookbook could easily become a family's favorite cookbook for great daily meals, special occasions and entertaining! A simple way to raise your family's standard of living, through culinary excellence!

I never had a chance to go to this restaurant, but after reading the book I feel as if I had been. I shall be ordering from these people again.

This book was very odd. It's intelligent and well written, which is unusual in itself. It illuminates a love story between a beautiful girl and a "loser" guy. But there's nothing explicit, and it is discreet with pulling the curtain across. The characters are all a little strange, which is always good. Recommended.

My friends, I have been tricked. Throughly fooled. Utterly led astray. In short, Margaret Mahy may well be having a good laugh at my ineptitude. Having known her to be considered perhaps the greatest young adult fantasy writer in the known world, I picked up "The Catalogue of the Universe" with my typical snotty snobby snitty opinions of what the story would entail. Actually, since I like to read books without knowing ANYTHING about the plot ahead of time, my opinions of this book totaled one in number. I was convinced that this was a fantasy book. I mean, the title of the book is "The Catalogue of the Universe" for pete's sake. The cover shows planets and young swimmy faces. And it's written by the woman who wrote the illustrious "The Changeover". So I picked up, read it through, and kept stopping at the end of each and every chapter to wonder where the magic was. Let this be a lesson to all, you foolish reviewers like myself who prefer to infer storylines rather than, oh say, read the summaries on the backs of the books. If you leap to conclusions, you're liable to make a fool of yourself. And I adore telling the world when I've been silly, so it worked out perfectly for me. In short (har har), "The Catalogue of the Universe" is a romantic, emotional, humorous, philosophical tale of two teens and the different ways in which they try to sort out the mysteries of the cosmos/their lives.Angela is beautiful and she knows it. She's the kind of girl who attracts men with relative ease and lives life exactly as she would like to. Of course she has a crazy single mom and she lives in a house with an honest-to-goodness outhouse, but that's fine with her. It's the fact that she's never met her biological father that stings. All at once charming and impulsive, Angela decides to enmesh her best friend Tycho in her plans to meet her pop for the very first time. Tycho has his own set of problems, however. As a particularly romantic and philosophical young man (in no little part due to his name), Tycho's in love with Angela. They both know this and they both know it's a hopeless situation. Plus he has a crazy family to deal with and some serious self-esteem issues. Still, in a series of wild confrontations, escapes, and rescues the two friends begin to learn a little more about themselves and their relationship with the Catalogue of the Universe.Mahy places herself at a disadvantage right from the start. She's placed her book squarely in the palms of a beautiful female protagonist. Many otherwise well-written books have faltered with this kind of character (most notably the oft banned, "Blood and Chocolate"). When a teen girl is beautiful and knows it, it's incredibly difficult not to make her a conceited little cur. Mahy tries her best to keep Angela under control, but the character is a little too headstrong and wild. She's likable once in a while but thoroughly detestable others. You begin to wonder why it is that fabulous Tycho (who I am personally nominating for the Best Datable Young Adult Novel Character Award of 1985) even hangs around her. Sure she's pretty. But she's also high-strung and insensitive to others. In the hands of a lesser writer this would be a distinct problem. Fortunately, Mahy's clever enough to split Angela's story with Tycho's. You get an even look at the goings on in both their families. It was with great relief that the reader leaves Angela's nutty adventures in the wings while Tycho takes the center stage.It's funny, but I haven't even mentioned the scientific, sociological, anthropological, and philosophical discussions that pepper this book. This is the perfect young adult novel for that kid who thinks about the big questions constantly. The ideal reader of this book is a teen who understands why Tycho sticks sentences he likes over his bed so that he'll see them first thing in the morning. Honestly, sometimes the discussions of the universe between Tycho and Angela went a little over my head. I liked that. It's a rare feeling to pick up a YA novel and feel left behind. It makes you want to read the book over and over again. It makes you want to (gasp, shudder) BUY the book. This is a feeling I rarely have. I have it now.Just in case my mention of philosophy scared you off, I'm going to reel you into the I Love The Catalogue of the Universe Club by mentioning its humor. This book is hee-larious. Witty banter galore. If you're a fan of fast-paced conversations containing biting wit, this book is also for you. Tycho's discussions with his brother, if read aloud, would probably baffle some. In a conversation with their mother about their older (and over adored) sister Africa, Tycho and his brother Richard discuss their parents' preference:"Of course I'm jealous," Richard said, "and so is Tycho, aren't you, Tyke? You often wondered why he was so short. Well, I'll tell you now: it's jealousy that's stunted him". "I tried to grow," Tycho said, responding immediately. "I did my best, but I was weighted down hour after hour by..."That's a common conversation. Fast dialogue and smart characters. So smart, in fact, that you'll wish you were in the kitchen with them enjoying the full extent of their humor.So the book has it all. Mind-blowing theorems, romance, likable characters (on the whole), and funny passages. In short, it's frighteningly well-written. There aren't enough books in the world to compare to this brilliant little number. If you know of any teen that wants a book that doesn't talk down to them or patronize them in the least, "The Catalogue of the Universe" is ideal. It isn't a fantasy (as I discovered). It's better. It's reality in its finest light.

Ever since he first saw her, in kindergarten, Tycho has been madly in love with Angela. However, he was always small and funny-looking and at first she didn't notice him at all. Later, when she did notice him, she made him into a best friend instead of a boyfriend as he would have liked. She reserved that position for better looking and more confident guys in their class.As her best friend, though, Tycho does hold a special position in Angela's life. He knows things about her she doesn't share with her boyfriends, and he is the one she often turns to when she has a serious problem. Now that she is a senior in high school, treading water until the end of the year, there is something bothering her.Angela has never known her father. Her mother is her best friend and greatest protector and over the years has told her stories about the wonderful man who was her father, but Angela has never met him. Now she has managed to track him down, and she wants to meet him and talk to him, to hear what he has to say about her. She wants a relationship with him, but she suspects her mother won't approve and somehow her boyfriend Robin isn't the right one to help her.So Angela turns to Tycho to be her partner in meeting her father. But when things go all wrong and Angela's world seems to crash around her, will Tycho be strong enough to help her get back on her feet?I loved Tycho's personality and his family's dynamics. I also liked the history between Tycho and Angela, and I liked his big blowup and his confession after she met her father. He was a fantastic character. The book threw me off a bit, though, starting off seeming mysterious but then ending up staying strictly in the real world. Because I liked Tycho so much, I didn't like the way Angela kept stringing him along.

I originally saw this book and though it might be a good one to add to my classroom collection (as a middle school science teacher). So I put it on my wishlist. It was given to me as a gift a few weeks ago and with time on my hands I decided to read it. This book was more of a romance than I expected and less of a science book. While it had some good science material in it about the stars, I do not believe it would be good for kids at age 12. Two teens become friends after viewing a lunar eclipse, though they have known each other since they were 5. He has been in love with her since they met, and she has been in love with romance. It seems a typical one-sided relationship for him until she realizes that romantic ideas have a place, but do not rule all we do. She finally sees him for the wonderful person he has always been and falls in love with him. Though I do not usually read romance-type stories, it is a nice story and I am glad that I read it.

I bought this book to help my son with his 6th grade science fair project, and found myself reading it as well! It is well organized, witty and provides excellent examples on the do's and don'ts of scientific research. I would even recommend this book to established scientists and their students.

This is the science project book we wish we had found first. It is not a list of project ideas, like other books. Instead, it is a very practical guide to doing a science project. How to break a big idea down into a managable project. How the parents can be sure to let the student do the work and benefit from the experience. Full of good tips, warnings of impending mistakes, and a very good reference on what a science project is all about. I'm also sure that science teachers would be impressed with its informative and guiding style and could easily make use of the book as a student reference for any project.

Bought yesterday, can't put it down -- will reread it again this week. This book is a solid gold mine on pulling our InfoSec heads out of our InfoSec tailpipes and focusing on the modes and methods our real adversaries are using. (Pro Tip: They aren't using crappy malware, so if you're InfoSec program is built on stopping malware you should be concerned.)We all hear about the social engineering component to an effective attack, but to see it so effectively used over and over again with Wil's case studies really drives home the point.If you're involved in either the management of an Information Security program, or involved in the more tactical parts of penetration testing, I'd put this on your short list of books to read this year. I hope he does a follow-up.

This book is the real deal. I found it to be eye-opening, because, despite sounding very advanced and almost next-level, the attacks accompanied by source code show how simple and effective they are in reality.This book seemed light at first (200 pages), so I was skeptical at it's ability to really tackle advanced topics, but I will say I was very pleasantly surprised. Those two hundred pages are action packed and filled with jaw-dropping 'this is cool' moments.My only gripe with it is that it's a little formulaic, with the social engineering being shoehorned into every attack, and maybe pushing the whole APT thing too much, like when you really want something to become 'a thing'. Do we really need to socially engineer payloads using the same formula for all of the attacks? Not even one 'ha Ked the router with boring Cisco exploits' example? I guess it wouldn't make for an entertaining book.

This book is in a class of its own compared to other security and pentesting books. I would highly recommend to anyone interested or currently working in network security. Instead of simply explaining how to use common pentesting tools, Wil Allsopp explains how they work and how to write your own custom tools from the ground up. Even if you do not have a programming background, it is worth understanding how an attacker can infiltrate a "secure" network without being detected.

One of the better books on the market on real penetration testing and creating advanced persistent threats. Great coding examples/strategies and how to think outside the box when it comes to attacking systems/companies. Elite guys like Wil Allsopp create their own custom tools all the time for real penetration testing. This is what nation-state actors are doing. Highly recommended.

This book is one chapter after the next about sample hacking scenarios, but each chapter explores a different hacking methods in different environments. It's not a book on theory; it's about real-world examples of hacking networks. So, if you read something in the news about someone getting hacked, and you wonder how it may have possibly been done, this is the book to read.

Although I have not finished this book, it is very well written. I will say that it goes far above what I was expecting in terms of the technical material. If you are looking for something to learn basics this is NOT the book for you. Take the title literally and know that it is advanced.

The author truly knows his art. As a penetration tester, I feel that many books just re-hash the same old material and tools. This book covers much more than just pentesting, it covers APT and gives realistic scenarios and tools that actually work. This is a book for everyone who works offensive and defensive security because it covers how real malicious actors approach companies and steal their critical data.

I purchased this to continue my training and learning. This is a great addition if you are in courses like eLearnSecurity's CPPT or CompTIA's new Pen Test+. Alot of great ideas should you encounter some of these occurrences.

This is not a work about speculative science fiction, but about the presently emerging technologies that everyone around the globe has an interest in knowing about and becoming involved in ensuring that they are used wisely and justly, or else not used at all. The work provides just the right blend of informative introductions to new technologies along with relevant ethical considerations of these technologies in order to equip readers to think critically - and, Preston hopes, collectively - about emerging technologies. This marks a huge departure from Industrial Age human impacts, Preston argues, which have become increasingly significant to be sure but have been largely unintentional in terms of soiling our nest. He reports on emerging technologies from the cellular level to the atmospheric level and beyond, designed to 1) improve human quality of life, 2) aid other species, or 3) combat the myriad consequences of human-caused climate change and perhaps even start to moderate global temperature rise. All come with lots of unknowns. Those in control of these scientific gambles potentially have a lot to gain economically, Preston stresses. He does not weigh in on which of these â€œSynthetic Ageâ€ developments he believes to be ethical or unethical, which perhaps some readers might find a little confusing: is the author buying into this or not? Rather, he insists that implementation of any of these technologies must be based on democratic decision making rather than the longstanding dictates of capitalism. The first few micro-level chapters require the reader to delve into what for many of us is pretty abstract detail (nanotechnology), but throughout Preston is a clear storyteller and an effective translator of complex science to a popular audience. This is an important book; the more people who read it, the closer weâ€™ll be to the informed citizenry needed for that democratic decision making heâ€™s talking about.

Lesson #1: weâ€™re in it! The Synthetic Age is not a far-off sci-fi future. Thereâ€™s no denying the extent to which humans have altered and re-engineered the (formerly) â€œnaturalâ€ world. Concerned that human manipulation of the planet is going too far? Preston confirms it. From nano-technology to planetary weather, this book provides a stunning current reality of the intense impact of our species. We are literally EVERYWHERE. But thatâ€™s OK because someoneâ€™s keeping an eye on this meddling, right? Nope! Lesson #2: Engineers and corporate interests are way out ahead of policy and government. Preston illustrates with shocking examples and personal stories how we are all affected, and how individuals and corporations are making changes with massive potential impacts that may be irreversible. This book is a plea for engagement. Itâ€™s written by someone who knows the science and ethics of the Synthetic age, and the existential threat that it poses to his --and our-- well-being. The takeaway at the end of The Synthetic Age is that at this critical time for humanity, we must tread lightly henceforth and only proceed with new technologies after thorough and careful scientific and philosophical forethought to ensure real progress. If not, the unintended consequences may be irreparable.

Irene O'Garden is a supreme sentence-maker and her artistry as a poet here in this story is remarkable. A fine example of a tender touch that packs a punch. And a lesson in literary risk taking, too. I was propelled into Irene Oâ€™ Garden's life by her poetic use of language, her honesty about her troubled family. She is a generous writer and a forgiving soul. The "rapids" become actual white water on a dangerous wilderness trip- but Irene O'Garden navigates the ephemeral and emotional rapids of her life with the same courage and beauty. Not to be missed.

RISKING THE RAPIDS grabbed me on page one and never let go. The pacing of the story was masterfully accomplished by alternating Irene O'Garden's wilderness adventure with memories of growing up in a dysfunctional family with a detached mother and alcoholic father. The scenes are written in beautiful, poetic prose that had me in awe of her talent and feeling the contradictory emotions of happier memories intermingled with disturbingly painful ones. The tension escalates dramatically throughout both the wilderness adventure and her childhood. I had to keep reading in the hope that she would find peace and safety.

Iâ€™ve read all her books. Irene Oâ€™Garden is the poetic equivalent of Ansel Adams. Here she records her turbulent childhood in a difficult environment with the studied framing, the patient construction and the crystal contrast of black on white. In her 60â€™s she resolves her lingering conflicts by navigating life-threatening river rapids with her now extended family. She ends her journey in the calmer waters of gentle understanding, acceptance of and joy in her family landscape. I read it on my Kindle and then ordered 2 paperbacks! One for my library and one to share!

I'm not a big memoir person, but I picked up this book and devoured it. It's the story of growing up in a large family, all the love and neglect and fear you might expect, but presented with such compassion that it actually made me rethink how I look at my own childhood. O'Garden manages to hang on to the internal voice of a child, for most of us long forgotten. This book is a shot straight to the heart.

Risking the Rapids is a rare memoir that is beautifully written, moving and riveting. The pacing is that of a great mystery. It opens with her brother's death, then switches between a recent white water rafting trip and her childhood with her locally famous father and distant mother. But the mystery is how did this seemingly happy family produce such troubled children. "Our parents never beat us. We had enough to eat and wear . . . What happened to us?" Unlike many memoirs that often seem self-indulgent and needy, Risking the Rapids draws you into to this imperfect family with empathy. They are flawed but O'Garden deftly depicts that each is worthy of love. Once you finish Risking the Rapids youâ€™ll think about it for days. Itâ€™s that good!

This wonderful memoir is a testimony to the bonds of family that hold on tight through pain, loss and misunderstanding. I relished O'Garden's rich language all along the way â€” as concrete and sensory as a zen thwack, but delicious, evocative and transporting. Through the fine details of her tactile memories, I found myself unearthing some of my own and confronting the stories within. And what a ride we get to take down that river, feeling the drama and the anxiety of the trip as viscerally as if we were right alongside and then, the landings into safety and sublime sustenance come through with vivid, palpable joy.

Irene Oâ€™Garden is a poet and this memoir, reflected in a harrowing trip in the Bob Marshall wilderness, moves as rapidly as the river. Her family was/is complicated and my hunch is most of us will see parallels in our own families. What we might not be able to duplicate is her honesty and her love. A really fine, Long form poem by an extraordinarily observant writer.
