About the Author

Joel Fuhrman M.D. is a board-certified family physician, best-selling author and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. This book is awesome. It really opens your mind to how important good eating habits in childhood are. To all those people out there who think there is nothing wrong with loading kids up on diary and meat and junk food, this book demonstrates by reliance on peer-reviewed scientific literature that such a course of action is setting the stage for the later development, during adulthood, of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disease. There are those out there that cling tenaciously to the standard American diet, heavy on junk food, meat, and diary, and processed factory foods. But the evidence shows that such an approach is deleterious to human health. This book will change the lives of your children well into adulthood. Buy it; read it; and implement it.

This book is excellent! I already know a lot about the benefits of a plant based diet, and I learned even more by reading this book! He gives a very good reason "why" to step aside from the SAD diet and provide healthy, REAL foods for our children.I do wish Dr Fuhrman would publish an updated version, as some of the book is a bit outdated (published in 2006). For instance, he states that peanuts should not be given to children under the age of two- an old guideline that has been debunked by current research.There is also no mention of GMO's and he advocates soy milk and tofu quite a bit which most current health experts do not.However, this book is a great read and offers many good reasons to switch to a healthy plant based diet!If only all pediatricians focused on what our children eat!!!

This book was the pivoting point to change my family's eating habits and got us further steps closer to a healthy life.I have been reading and digesting books, articles, videos about healthy living: diet, exercise, chemical exposure etc. to keep our family safe and healthy. There is so much conflicting information and it gets very overwhelming to decide what is truth and what works?Finally with his book, everything became clear and the solution to healthy diet presented itself so clearly. We are as a family still not perfect but we try hard to get most of our calories from plant based foods. I stopped buying butter, cheese and milk. We stopped eating chicken, red meat and fish, only occasionally.That means a lot of green smoothies, all kinds of vegetables raw and cooked (steam mostly), nut butters, Ezekiel bread, water.Just in 3-4 weeks I noticed:- I'm not bloated, my tummy doesn't get bigger and bigger as the day goes on.- I don't get cravings after dinner to eat something starchy and sweet.- I'm always full but never stuffed or starved.- I have more energy in general.- The kids (I have young kids) get over their runny noses quickly without becoming sick.I started mentioning and recommending this book to many friends. Also to my family. It turned out that the book that changed my sister's life (she became a functional vegan and lost like 25 pounds and kept is for the past 2+ years) was also Dr.Fuhrman's book - Eat to Live.If you are one that enjoys his/her comfort foods a lot and finds it very hard to change habits in general, this book will not work for you. Love this book.Yes...it will be stressful having those dinner/food time discussion with your children if you just throw a big plate of veggies at them and never let them eat a fast food meal again...I read other reviews that said it was not a good book because there is no way their kids would go along with this. I believe it is my responsibility, as a parent, to lay a good foundation now, in all areas, regardless of how hard it is to do.I know that making small changes, over time will do the trick and the kids will never know what hit them! Not too long after presenting more veggies and fruit as options instead of processed food/snacks my child asked for fruit instead...it was a pleasing shocker. Even better, I see the food choice trending in a whole foods direction and that keeps me motivated!I have first hand experience with curing illnesses with nutrition and I know that the information presented here is good, solid advice. I have most of Dr. Fuhrman's books and I recommend them all.The book is well written. Presented in an organized fashion and easy to understand.

My 12-month-old son kept getting sick from daycare so I started implementing some of Dr. Fuhrman's principles in his diet, mainly adding a lot of green veggies and healthy fats. He gets a daily green smoothie and he loves it. It's been a few weeks and he hasn't gotten sick again but it's too early to tell if it really works, however it can't hurt to eat more veggies. Most of all, it made us all eat healthier as a family and be more conscious about what we put in our body.

I’m halfway through this book and I can’t help think that I should’ve been able to see this before getting pregnant with our first child.Basically this book tells us that disease-proofing the next generation is not simply medicating or giving them supplements. It starts way way before. Probably in our own childhood or from the precious generation. And our gastronomical choices will have a lot to do with it.I highly recommend this book 👍🏻

An amazing book. Don't get fooled by it being a few years old, if it were up to me it would be required reading in schools because its so factual and believable. Dr. Fuhrman proves that he has honest, fundamental science on his side and not trendy gimmicks. He cuts right to the chase on what you need to know about children's nutrition and its all so very 21st century and heartfelt. I believe in what he says so much that i not only follow his nutritional advice but feel the urge to spread his knowledge to others as well, even though he doesnt have a booster/salesman intent or style to him.

But for anyone interested in this era in African or indeed in global history, well worth the effort. Gomez reputation as a leading scholar of Africa and its diaspora is richly deserved. Btw, his Exchanging our Country Masks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South, is another work of high scholarship.

This is a very comprehensive work on medieval Africa, a topic that is seriously understudied. The author is extremely intelligent and knows what he’s talking about, perhaps too much so. This is clearly not an introductory text, as the author uses highly technical Islamic terms with little explanation, and he goes into detail on the sources he uses. The text is rather dry, so I would not recommend this for lay reading. It would probably serve better for graduate students in a course on the subject. Nevertheless, if you are serious about the subject, this is an excellent source of information.

First of all, I can't believe that I am writing the first customer review of this absolutely outstanding work. I've just passed page 210 and it is by far one of the most thorough history texts I have ever read. I'll come back to flesh out the review when I have finished but I wanted to do the author a solid and give him a review. This has to be the most comprehensive history of West Africa ever written. The way Gomez interrogates and utilizes the source material is astounding. Extracting value from Griots, Arab travelers and domestic historians presents an extremely detailed and yet also nuanced picture of West Africa before European contact. How this is not at the top of the Amazon ratings given the recent success of Black Panther I don't understand. If looking at fictional Wakanda made you curious about historical African Empires I can't think of a better work.

DO NOT BUY! My fault for not doing more research before buying. There is nothing in this book that one cannot find on the internet - for free! It is 44 pages of nothing, absolutely nothing of value. Just go to Wikipedia and search billiards you will get more information. I read it in 15 minutes waiting at the dentists office and then left it on the table in the waiting area with the 2 year old copies of People and Field and Stream!

I thought there would be more content on the mechanics of shooting pool. I didn't see anything on bank shots.This book is more of an overview.

John O'Donohue was awarded a Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the University of Tübingen in 1990. Many lines invite us to read and reread them and then close the books and linger with their fragrance for days. I would like to give a sampling of such lines here, taken from two of my favorite chapters - The Call to Beauty and The Music of Beauty. Deep and beautiful reading by a great soul. This is one of my "morning books," the ones I reach for when I need an uplift to my thoughts, heart and spirit to take into my day. It's not light reading. You have to be willing to engage your own mind. There are no platitudes here. There is deep, heartfelt thought from an incredibly well-read and caring soul.

At first I had a hard time getting into the book but was really impressed as I read further and began to feel the meaning of some of the essays. We don't always think about the meaning of things as we go about our busy world. This book is well worth reading and "thinking" as you go along! It has made me stop and observe the beauty that is in everything!

Gift for a friend and its exactly as expected. John O'Donohue makes Beauty approachable and weaves together a beautiful narrative of what beauty is like and good for--not for selfish gain, but to point one to more and a greater telos. I'm listening to this on Audible too and O'Donohue is the one who reads his own book and his Irish accent is AMAZING! I highly recommend this book if you would like something that is good for thinking, but in a light, fun sort of way :) (no dryness here!)

I know my headline sounds a bit cheesy, but I mean it with a whole heart. This book is so rich with poetical, literary and philosophical insight that it's worth having a copy of your own. For a book that's this full of wisdom demands its readers to return to it, like one returns to their favorite restaurant.I sent a copy to an old friend when his mother passed away. There are sections on grief in the book that I thought would console him. Too bad O'Donohue has died. I would have liked to keep reading his thoughts. You can't read this book and not feel inspired to live a life that fosters what is true and beautiful.

I can not say enough about Irish poet, priest, and deep thinker John O'Donohue. I knew I loved his work and particular beautiful view of life, so when I gave this to my husband for Christmas to listen to on our trip to the Oregon Coast, I knew it would be a winner. He outshone himself, having us stop the tape frequently to cry and converse over the profoundness of his of his words. What an amazing man! The world misses him, yet embraces his spirit forever.

This is the finest and most inspirational book on this subject I have ever encountered. This is one of those rare works where you can open the book to any page and immediately find deeply insightful paragraphs. I love O'Donohue and still mourn his untimely passing. He was a genius and his work continues to shine. Of all his works, this is the best.

The timeliness of this book's message reminds me of the old Burt Bacharach song, "What the World Needs Now..." but ending with this book instead of love! This book's message is about REAL beauty, something that has truly been stolen from most of us through today's hectic and media laden world. For those looking for a philosophical solution to modern problems, this book is a must read and just the right length; it's not too short or too long! Beauty is more mystically defined here, it is not the beauty that is manufactured by models or movie stars, not even by radio stations and television. More than a "stop and smell the roses" mentality, O'Donohue invokes deeper thinking on the part of the reader, something that like beauty, is often absent in our world today.The book was required by my composition class, and at first glance I didn't see how it would fit into the subject matter, but I am very glad my instructor placed this on her readings list!

Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin is Book 1 of her Refiner's Fire Series. It is probably the best book I've read in a couple of years. It's strongly Christian yet not preachy. This is historical fiction but not pedantic. It is amazingly written and researched.The setting is in the time of the U.S. Civil War in Richmond, Virginia. This book will delight you—whichever side of the Civil War you identify with. This is by far the best Civil War story I've ever read.Caroline Fletcher is a lovely young woman who lives on a plantation in Richmond. Her parents are delighted to be having a new baby, but sadly, the baby boy dies shortly after birth. Her father doesn't understand his daughter and has a difficult time communicating with her, though he loves her dearly. Caroline's closest friends are her mammy, Tessie, who's about fifteen years older than she is, servant Eli, her father's manservant Gilbert, and Grady, Tessie's little boy.As a young teen, Caroline gets acquainted with her cousins. A visit to Hilltop, her aunt and uncle's plantation, is an eye-opener for her. These people treat slaves as if they were animals. Caroline gets busy helping sick slave children and ends up sick herself.Caroline's mother is expecting again. After a long labor, the baby is stillborn, and shortly afterwards, Caroline's mother takes her own life. Caroline's father is desolate. Her Aunt Martha comes for the funeral and invites Caroline to go back to Philadelphia with her. There, Caroline meets the Reverend Nathaniel Greene, who heads up an anti-slavery group in the north. They become friends. In the meantime, she seeks comfort and friendship from her cousin Robert, who adores her. He's her savior at social events.After some time, Caroline returns home and meets a most infuriating man with blue eyes—and one of the handsomest faces she ever saw. Oh, how he makes her mad. She never wants to see him again. Of course, she does, and they argue every time they're thrown together. Soon, she realizes he is Sally's brother, a member of the notable St. John family. She can hardly believe it, and her feelings for this man are beginning to change.Caroline is also growing in her faith. Her convictions are the same, but she is learning to follow God—no matter what dangers she faces. Her spiritual mentor is Eli, the pastor of the slave church.In order not to spoil the story, I'll let you read Candle in the Darkness for yourself. It is awesome. Whether you are black or white, whether your ancestors fought on one side or the other, you will love this book. I only wish all historical fiction was this good!Candle in the Darkness contains one "white lie" that's not corrected, non-graphic descriptions of war casualties, a storyline about master-slave sexual abuse, and implied adulterous relationships. There are no explicit scenes or details. I would recommend this book to older teens and adults.

If you want to become fully engulfed in the raging of the Civil War--the battle that was fought not only physically, but also morally, sit awhile by Caroline and read her story.Having done a good bit of Civil War research on my own, I found "Candle in the Darkness" to be fascinating and well-researched. The story itself seemed a little slow at times because Austin was very thorough to explain the history of what was happening during that time. It actually made me think of books written by Ballentyne or Henty, because it wasn't just fiction, but educational.There were some mentions of how men treated the women slaves, but no scenes happened. The romance didn't stand out to me much--but that could have been because I was more fascinated with the whole historical aspect. Yes, there was romance. There were some kisses, some mentions of longing to be a wife and what it entailed. I would say that the content is more appropriate for older readers rather than the young, conservative reader--just because some of the things mentioned may lead to questions.I can't say that I fully agreed with the stand that the main character took. It was fascinating to read, her motives were very believable, but I tend to think that the Civil War was more than just rooted in slavery and the confederates' desire for states' rights more than just the right to own slaves, but that is my personal opinion. It's just that reading this book presents the idea that slavery was THE issue of the Civil War...The spiritual content--seriously, best for last. I was highly, highly impressed! God and His Word was sprinkled throughout the entire book!! There were some amazing, strong Christian characters and they knew God's Word and used God's Word. This was, beyond any doubt, a Christian book. I found it spiritually edifying. I especially liked Eli (who wouldn't?). He was amazing and said some very thought-provoking things.I also loved the very realistic battle with fear. The characters portrayed were VERY real with very real "flesh" and that was amazing to read.As a writer, I found some things to wrinkle my nose at -- Austin's style was more of the "telling" where she summarized a lot of things. I prefer action as it leads the story forward a little better, but that's my critical viewpoint. ;) I didn't always feel like I was able to fully embrace Caroline. Sometimes, her raw emotion was very riveting, but other times, I had no clue how Caroline viewed something.But yeah... as a reader I give this book an overall five star review. I recommend it for any older readers--especially those who love the Civil War.A couple of quotes:“Most folks won’t change their mind unless they have a change of heart first.”“Faith don’t come in a bushel basket, Missy. It come one step at a time. Decide to trust Him for one little thing today, and before you know it, you find out He’s so trustworthy you be putting your whole life in His hands.”

This book made me wish I had Audible so I could be with the characters as I drove to and from work. I was so riveted, I read the book in a day and a half. I didn't want to leave the characters alone too long. That lets you know how engrossing this book is.Because this book is based on the past, I was curious if the author remained accurate so I used good ole Alexa to check the days of the week when they were specified in the story and she I can say she got is day of the week correct.I won't get in to the story line in my review because enough other reviewers have already done it, but I will say that the many sides of the slavery/civil war debate were represented in this story.I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the style so I look forward to reading the two other books in this series.
