I have used a lot of trail guides and never encountered one as worthless as this. I can only imagine that all the positive reviews come from people who have never read a trail guide before? A trail guide is supposed to give you an idea what you will encounter along the trail. This one tells you little, often nothing about that, and instead all the text is blather about how the trail got its name. Often, he will spend the entire description talking about an animal that the trail was named for, and then tell you it's extremely unlikely you will see that animal on the trail. Meanwhile, you still know absolutely nothing about the hike and whether it would be right for your family.For example, on our last hiking day, we went to Sky Pond, a 10-mile roundtrip hike that was stunningly beautiful but also pretty difficult. The trail guide's text was almost entirely about how the lakes along the way got their names and only very briefly described the route. It did little either to explain that this hike is one of the best in the park, or to warn about the difficult parts -- which are helpful to know when you're hiking with kids. It labeled the hike as moderately easy and made only a vague and unclear reference to the part of the trail where you have to climb a slippery wall of almost vertical loose rocks beside a waterfall.It did have one good aspect though -- my family had a lot of laughs about how ridiculously bad the trail descriptions were.

We recently spent a week hiking in RMNP and this guide was very helpful. I liked the fact that each hike has a summary at the beginning, which lists the expected duration, distance, trail surface, elevation change, possible wildlife, etc. along with the map. This guide does have a wide variety of hikes included, from the very short, easy ones, to the full-day, strenuous ones. There is something for everyone in this guide.

Took this book with us to RMNP earlier this month - was an excellent resource for hiking in the park. From what I can tell it is up to date/current. Only issue we had was trying to pick which hike to do everyday.

The book outlines (in wonderful detail) almost the entire park. In addition to providing elevation, elevation gain, GPS coordinates etc, the book gives guidance on what season is best for each of the hikes, what kinds of sights you will experience, and includes pictures and maps as well.

Nice that the trails are rated and is somewhat descriptive of the trails. Elevation maps of the trails are not provided and would be a good addition to the book. The book provides no description location of backcountry campsites.

While this book is decent and detailed in its descriptions, it is very difficult to find a specific trail or hike. I wanted overall maps or comprehensive indexes to help guide me to the correct section and these were almost completely lacking.

I am very pleased with this guide book. It's well presented for analyzing and planning my upcoming hike routes. The parks should publish something like this so they can help raise funds for the National Parks. I was surprised the parks sites lack the details needed for really planning and understanding the trails. I also bought a detailed map

One of the best hiking guides I've ever used. The information is very well organized and it's very thorough. It doesn't include a detailed map of the entire park, but I did acquire the Rocky Mountain National Park Hiking Map to use in conjunction. I may have more feedback after I actually go on the hiking trip, but I feel like I have a very good plan due to this guide and the map.

Iceberg Right Ahead! may be aimed mostly at children (specifically ages 8-12), but it is a wonderful addition to any Titanic buff's collection. Author Stephanie Sammartino McPherson follows the story of the creation of the great ship right through its most recent developments and what a journey it is! Illustrated beautifully throughout with photographs and recreations of drawings and paintings, the doomed liner is brought to life through detailed accounts of survivors and careful research. Ms. McPherson adds lots of facts about how debate has arisen over the exact way the Titanic sank, and she doesn't shy away from the less savory aspects and people (including how J. Bruce Ismay was derided for leaving the dying ship). I particularly enjoyed the stories of what happened to some of the survivors, including many of the officers.There really isn't anything too terribly revealing or new in Iceberg Right Ahead! and yet it's incredibly absorbing. At just over 100 pages, it is chock full of anecdotes and trivia and interviews, written in such a way that a younger reader will get the essence of what happened and yet still engage any older reader (like me) who loves to read anything and everything Titanic. It's fairly comprehensive in its telling, and even describes the debate about the retrieved artifacts. For those looking to learn as much as possible as the centenary of the sinking approaches, this gem is a good place to add to their knowledge. Recommended.

This book is fabulously done. It is definitely going on my shelf of favorites. Not only is the writing crisp and easy to read, but the whole design is beautifully done. The photographs, illustrations, and sidebars are placed so that they add to the overall design but don't interrupt the flow of the narrative. This is the sort of nonfiction that would work really well as a read-a-loud. One of the things I especially appreciated were the sidebars explaining some of the things we are still learning about the Titanic and why she went down. For example, on page 10, the author points out that ideas are changing about just what damage the iceberg did to the ship. From the beginning, it was assumed that the iceberg created a 300 foot long gash in the starboard side of the ship. But a new theory suggests that was not the case, instead the rivets gave way creating hundreds of small holes. The water pressure was so great that it forced water through these holes at a remarkably fast pace. I highly highly recommend this book.

A short read at just over 100 photo-enhanced pages, Iceberg, Right Ahead! is an excellent account of the Titanic, from its conception through the 1985 discovery of its North Atlantic resting place. Author Stephanie Sammartino McPherson has done a stellar job of laying out the story, humanizing the facts with personal accounts and conveying the horror and tragedy of the great ship's sinking - and all in a straightforward, highly readable manner. Even though much of the story of the sinking was familiar to me, I was completely absorbed in McPherson's telling. Less familiar (to me, at any rate), but just as interesting, were the sections on the aftermath - the American and British inquiries into the disaster, the formation of the ice patrols in the hope of preventing future tragedies and the stories of some of the survivors.While, because of the book's short format, none are explored in great depth, Iceberg, Right Ahead! touches on many of the issues and controversies surrounding the Titanic - the insufficient number of lifeboats, the ship's speed, the higher mortality rate of third class passengers and the failure of the nearby Californian to render aid, among others. IMHO, Iceberg, Right Ahead! could well spur readers into further research on any or all of these issues. Fortunately, there is a wealth of material available for curious minds.Aimed at the younger end of the YA market, the text includes parenthetical definitions of terms that might be unfamiliar to readers. (Example: "boatswain" - supervisor of unlicensed deckhands.) The book design is appealing and the many photos and other artwork illuminate the text well, adding great visual appeal. A timeline, a brief glossary, source notes and a bibliography are included along with mention of the fate of other famous ships of the Titanic's era.Iceberg, Right Ahead is concise, yes, but nonetheless, it's a riveting telling of one of the most famous disasters of all time. I literally could not put it down.Highly recommended.For those who find their interest in the Titanic piqued by Iceberg, Right Ahead!: The Tragedy of the Titanic and are looking to read further, I suggest starting with Walter Lord's A Night to Remember and its follow up The Night Lives On. IMHO, they give an excellent account and provide a solid base for further reading on the subject.

I've purchased a LOT of guitar instruction books over the last 3 years of guitar playing. My focus is Blues, hence me picking this book up. What I like MOST about this book is, it is SIMPLE in it's instruction and approach, yet the ideas are really rooted in musical theory. It does NOT clog up pages with music theory. I have a TON of books that do, and end up putting those down because I'm just not there most of the time on concepts, and I JUST LIKE PLAYING GUITAR. I don't always want to THINK ABOUT STUFF when I'm playing. I have used this book consistently for over a year now, and I LOVE it!!! Some of the reasons I like it are: there are a LOT of examples in each chapter, and they progress at a manageable pace. The examples are MUSICAL. Big bonus. The examples are not too difficult causing frustration, and not too hard causing boredom. I've learned a LOT of really great chords using this book.!:-)The way I practice is, I'll go thru a chapter, all the examples, and then spend about a week each chapter, then go to the next chapter, then repeat the previous chapter. I just keep repeating the older ideas along with the stuff I just learned. This is not a super in depth "music theory" guide, but rather a really logical guide with just enough info so you grasp the concept. You're not bogged down in theory. I use this book and maybe only one or two others more than ANY other guide books I've bought. This is PERFECT. If you're into the blues, the ONLY other one I use as much as this one is "Blues you can use," which is awesome as well, and worth purchasing.I feel like I know what I'm talking about as I've purchased about 30 instruction books trying to find something that works for ME. We all learn differently, but this one is really worth looking into if my story sounds similar to the way you like to practice/study. And maybe I'll see ya out on the road eventually! :-)

I retired this year and learn to play the Blues Guitar was on the top of my to do list. I have been messing around with trying to learn to play the guitar for over 40 years. I have tried private lessons, books and videos but nothing has ever really clicked for me. After giving it a go I usually give up in frustration and my guitar returns to the deep recesses of my closet waiting for the next time I get inspired.I started by digging out my old materials and started watching lessons on YouTube. Although this was helpful I soon discovered that I had no real direction and was not sure that I was progressing. So I decided to look for a book series that would give me a framework or curriculum to work with. After a lot of research I found this book and have been using it for two weeks. I can say that I have made more progress in this time than I have ever made in my past attempts. The lessons are easy to understand and build in a very logical order. They get to the point and get you playing right away. The audio and backing tracks make the lessons fun and challenging. I look forward to practicing every day and believe I have finally found a book that will help me reach my guitar goals.

Excellent book in an excellent series. Not only is the information provided in a progressive, easy to approach format, but the amount of information is staggering. For each style or idea, tracks and artists are mentioned so the student can hear what this technique can produce with some practice. The information itself is easy to understand with no musical theory, but for those with some musical theory, the exercises themselves can be analyzed and the patterns can then be adapted across the fret board. The provided audio tracks not only provide audible examples of the exercises, but also has tracks with a backing band playing in a specific chord progression. This allows the student to practice by playing with a band that stays on time, wont yell at you for messing up, and they never mess up the form! I am a book nerd that went to music school for percussion, but now play mainly strings. As a result, I will read and buy any and every type of book available. I've seen method books galore on a variety of instruments and not only is this specific book a good resource, the entire series is very high quality. This book will not only get you playing blues rhythm guitar in a short amount of time (after the first couple exercises I felt like I was really jamming some blues) , it will provide tools for you to improve your playing, improve your knowledge of form and the function of the form, and help the player to add variety to a standard progression (specifically where it shows how to mix in different chord inversions/constructions, melodic motives and broken syncopated concepts).

I bought the first three volumes of this series, and figured I'd review this one since it's the most likely one someone would purchase first. I've been playing just about anything with strings for more decades than I'd like to think about, and I own hundreds of technical music books. I'm always looking for interesting approaches, different ways of looking at theory and application, and, especially pertinent regarding Mr. Alexander's works, the most efficient ways to teach. So here it is: if you're a relative novice looking to play blues or rock, you'll be wasting a lot of time if you buy any other book.'Complete Guide' bypasses everything you don't need to know (you can waste years on that stuff), and provides a comprehensive, standard, easily applied method of learning rhythm and lead for blues, which is the basis of rock and much of jazz. With a bit of effort, you'll get to the point that you can play with others faster using Mr. Alexander's method much more quickly than if you'd gone to music school or tried another approach. The sound files are very helpful, later books in this series seamlessly build on the material presented here, and if you want to later try any of the Jazz or 'modern guitar' material, you'll be treading comfortably familiar ground.I'd thought it had all been written, and than nobody could add much to the genre. I was wrong. Buy this one, you'll be glad you did.

It is a well constructed tale literally wise. It gives insight in the common speech and language of the English People in Dicken's time. It brings to remembrance words I have not heard for several years. I started reading Dickens after reading an article about his works being dropped from College Courses as they were too complicated for modern readers. I did not find them complicated but very refreshing reading and much above a lot of the garbage of modern writers.

I thought I'd never buy anything from Focus on the Family, but the production is really good. Fans of British sitcoms will recognize actor Geoffrey Palmer as Mr. Brownlow. He played Lionel Hardcastle in As Time Goes By (1992-2002) with Judi Dench. Of course, all the voice actors do an outstanding job communicating the intrigue, sarcasm, moral conflicts, and social inequalities of the novel.However, the production does reflect an additional, curious irony: lots of violence, but no cussing. In the book, Oliver suffers physical and psychological abuse as an orphan, a child laborer, and a child criminal. The audio presentation is unsparing in its depiction of this sadistic underworld of Industrial England, but don't expect the novel's occasional profanity.Most of the time, the intensity of the criminal characters, such as Fagin, Monks, and Bill Sikes, covers the fact that all the actors are minding their verbal manners, but it does seem odd that Mr. Bumble isn't allowed to famously protest "...the law is a ass --a idiot," (sic). Instead, Focus on the Family uses the lesser known novel quote "...the law is a bachelor..."At any rate, the five CDs include an interpretive foreword and afterword, which serve as bookends of the Radio Theatre production. There's also a DVD of a behind-the-scenes look, as well as a documentary about the "modern day Olivers" of the foster care system. The set makes a great gift --for yourself, as well as someone else.

What I really DON'T like in these books is the illustrator! The drawings are crude woodcuts. Why? Anyway, the student were amused that I didn't like them, and they therefore felt free to express their opinions about Oliver Twist. Every one of them looked forward to hearing the next chapter, groaned over every new cliffhanger, and hoped to get a copy in their own hands.

Poor Oliver Twist has quite a tough life in the beginning. He is an orphan who is brought up in one bad home after another with pretty much no love at all. Like Harry Potter and many other sympathetic characters, Oliver's youth is not one to be envied. The tale primarily deals with his early life for the first half until he is drawn in with a band of criminals and makes a few friends and meets a few good people along the way until befalling a near tragedy. The second half of the book is more about the other characters involved in his saga.Oliver Twist starts off very down and gloomy in many parts and while that scenery doesn't change, the tone definitely does toward the end. It is worth reading for sure and another tome in the classics of Charles Dickens. This version contains some illustrations as well which were very well done and appropriate.

Don't you hate it when the book ends in a cliffhanger? This book does. If you don't want to know the ending, stop reading. Allium goes back to building roads under a new minister. Then she suddenly gets appointed ambassador to Ressaline, but the embassy is to be in Charth.Unused to diplomacy, she succeeds by being open and honest with the Ressalines. But when the Ressalines fail to reciprocate and deceive her on a major project, she feels she has failed and determines to return to Flarvor. This is where the book ends with no resolution.

Rage quit endings almost like someone walking out of a video game. Resigning in protest over deception and intrigue in the diplomat/spy game leaves a sour taste in the mouth. The play of the rules on one side of a border vs the rules on the other side and the interplay/intermix of two countries trying to get along. Matriarchal society with total male rejection trying to interface with a male ruler in a Patriarchal Society and the friction that builds as they try to establish viable trade without involving men and a ritual that is enticing and alluring for the pleasure it brings. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Can't wait for the next installment, I know it will be soon, but not soon enough . I truly hope this series continues for a VERY long time .

In mathematics, if when adding fractions you add the numerators and add the denominators you will get unexpected results. When dealing with people, if you are less than truthful you will also get unexpected results. This story probably ends in a way that you, the reader, do not expect. But all of this story is wonderful. ENJOY!

Nothing ruins a good book more than a terrible ending. This has the worst ending I've ever read and I have read a lot. This a spoiler alert. Gallium showed herself to be a mature and confident individual. Then after what was probably no more than the princess 's way of finding out if she wants to make an important state visit she throws a childish temper tantrum. Then overreacted by quitting. A terrible ending to a good book and cheap sensationalism to ave a cliff hanger. Unnecessary and unworthy of a good author.

The characters in this series are very well-written in general and the political intrigue is good. My only critique is that the ending is somewhat abrupt. Looking forward to more.

Loved this addition to the series and the characters were great. I didnâ€™t quite like the ending, I just felt it was so aprupt. I canâ€™t wait for the next addition.

Yet another book by this author that I could not put down! I love the characters that are created in these books and get invested in what happens to them. With the self doubt and interpersonal relationships that appear and the trust that gets rebuilt time and again. I do not want to wait to find out what happens to Allium. Please do not wait to long to let your readers know what happens with her.

I have had heart surgery 4 times (yes ,you read correctly..4) and therefore it is a subject that is (pardon the pun) near and dear to my heart. I know, in many ways, way more than I ever wanted to know and way less than I should have known. This book offered me insights I had not previously been knowledgably about.The book begins with the first surgery to truly cut into the heart, during World War II in order to remove shrapnel from a soldiers heart. From there is moves on to the correction of "blue baby" syndrome to transplantation, valve jobs, bypass surgery, and what the future holds for those with cardiac issues.The chapter begin with a description of the surgery followed by the history of the development of the surgical technique, many of which were truly daring and utterly amazing. The author follows the surgery from its idea and attempts in the laboratory (if you are an animal lover, you may find this a bit muchâ€¦most of the procedures required dozens of practice runs on animals before attempts in humans) and on to what became the surgery. Each was groundbreaking at the time it was performed.The author also details the issues with making the desired equipment needed to complete such surgeries such as the heart lung bypass machine, the valves used in valve jobs and so on. And a lot of engineering was needed for each surgery to proceed.Finally, the author reviews the personalities involved with the surgeries. To be a heart surgeon requires a God complex and an ego that is huge. My first surgeries were performed by a team of 2 cardiac surgeons, but my last was done by a surgeon with several physician assistants. I asked why and he explained that there could only be one "God" in the operating theater at a time. The egos of the men that performed each surgery for the first timeâ€¦well, you have to read to believe how huge the egos wereThis is a wonderful book, filled with detail, yet very readable. For anyone about to undergo heart surgery it might be comforting to know just how it is done, and how safe it is. For those of us who have already been under the knife, it is interesting to learn just what goes on while you are under. Highly recommend!.

A masterfully written gripping account of the history of cardiac surgery and its bold pioneers. One of the best books I have read.

Being the patient gives new perspective on the book. January 2005 was my quadruple bypass surgery following an angiogram in Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. I was fascinated during that procedure by being able to watch as the catheter placed its dye on the x-ray image. That resulted in the new surgical assessment "Oh, crap" stated by the doc as medical termology for >90% blockages at multiple places. Interestingly the total coleseterol measured at less than 110 and had been at that value for many years. He gave me a nice video of my blocked arteries and then introduced me to his buddy, the heart surgeon. My only symptom had been shortness of breath and a totally failed Tc-99 stress test scan.Seven hours later I felt better save for the knife fight that I seem to have lost. I don't even remember what bar I was in, but no more shortness of breath. This is a good book to read if you have had or will have any sort of heart repairs.

This is a very good review of the history of heart surgery. The writing keeps one moving from one topic to the other. It has been a very enjoyable and informative read.

I worked in open-heart surgery for 25 year and I learned so much from reading this book. Great historical perspective. Wish I would have come across this book sooner. Well written...good flow!

An excellent history of a fascinating subject. This is a book that is hard to put down. When I finished it, I wanted more. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in both the science and practice of medicine. This history is also well seasoned with accounts of many of the personalities involved.
