Interesting and informative book looking back to the signage of a bygone era. 'New York Neon' is full of glossy photographs and descriptions of vintage signs before they disappear to be replaced by today's energy efficient LED signs. Thomas Rinaldi traces both the signs and the businesses they represent in a retrospective of New York City's commercial life from the 1920s to the present day. Whether you are in the sign industry or an advocate for preserving the ambiance of New York's heyday, this book will fascinate and surprise you. Mr Rinaldi has included so many side facts with the photographs that you may well find yourself quoting them when conversation about the 'good old day's comes around. New York Neon certainly provides a fine representation of those days.

I am a big fan of neon anyway and would have enjoyed the book had it only been pictures, but I was very impressed with the included history of neon and illuminated signs in general. Also, each picture includes some detail on the sign in the picture such as who constructed it. Many (though not all) of the pictures are in color. Of course, I don't expect older pictures to be in color. I have several books on neon but this is one of the best. Whether you are a native of NY city or not (I am not), if you are interested in neon, I believe you will enjoy this book. A good value too!

This book is brilliant in so many ways. I am so impressed with Tom Rinaldi's beautiful book, it is an important record of these vintage neon signs and their unique artistic legacy. Tom's nyneon blog and walking tour of the West Village are equally impressive, a must for anyone interested in Manhattan history.

Another great book on NEON.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who is passionate about "classic" neon signs, a subject that interests me as well.Based on my friend's initial impression - he has just begun to read the text - the book is very informative and well illustrated. The only major/minor drawback is the very modest overall dimensions of the paperback version of the book.Makes reading the text more difficult and the images are quite small as well.

A detailed insight into the "art" of Neon during its development during the 1920's - 1960's in the Neon paradise of New York. A great informative read.

I grew up with neon signs, & with their useage in decline, I value books like this that preserve with pictures this form of advertising art.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Thomas Rinaldi's "NY Neon." Not only were the photographs beautiful to look at, and the prose well-researched and entertaining, seeing all of these old signs together took me back through a journey into my youth and the NYC of yester-year, which, Rinaldi correctly asserts, is vanashing before our eyes. Its so important to take time to remember the past and preserve what we can for the future before our history is lost forever. Bravo to Rinalid on this important work.

I Choose You is a delightful collection of 7 full length sweet romances. One of my favorites in the collection is Runaway Romance by Miralee Ferrell where heroine Ann leaves a successful life in the fast lane of reality TV when she finds out her TV boyfriend must dump her to drive up ratings. She ends up in an Amish community, wrecks her car, and learns about a new way of life while waiting for her car to be repaired. She also meets Jimmy who basically wants the kind of life she had without knowing who she is. And then there’s Hunter. When she falls for the Amish community and tries to help one of her new friends, she gets into a worse bind by trying to be helpful. And well, you’ll have to read this story to find out all of the troubles that go with fleeing the good life and moving to the “gutt” life.I also loved Finding Love in Eureka California by Angela Ruth Strong where Genevieve imagines having a relationship with a handsome pilot who flies into the airport where she works. Her daily happiness begins to depend on seeing the pilot who barely knows she’s alive and has his own pretty fancy girlfriend. Genevieve also has a heartwarming relationship with regular passenger named Olivia who is a paraplegic. After some difficulties this story has an especially sweet ending. All of the stories in I Choose You are fun romances, so I’ll leave you to discover your favorite. This is a good collection that you won’t regret reading.

I Choose You is a collection of 7 stories each with their own storylines. All of the authors have strong storylines that carry each novella. Come Next Winter follows Carol after tragedy strikes. She must learn to pick up the pieces for herself and her son. When Frank the local pastor comes into her life, Carol knows that he is all she would look for in a spouse if she was looking. However, her cousin Millie has her sights set on becoming a pastor's wife. The antics that her aunt takes to make sure Millie wins will leave you laughing.Runaway Romance finds Anne choosing to flee from her current life. She finds herself in a situation which brings her to know her true self.A Love to Treasure sends Nicole on a scavenger hunt in order find her inheritance. Mark is wanting a quiet place to contemplate his future. When their paths cross, Mark must keep Nicole from danger and not loose his heart in the process.Finding Love in Eureka California brings us Genevieve. Growing up in a family of adopted siblings, Genevieve works hard to keep them together even though her parents didn't care. However, will she and Matt be able to leave their pasts and grow in the future. You won't be disappointed in any of these novellas. The characters are strong and independent but learn so much in their journeys.

Come Next Winter, by Linda Hanna and Deborah Dulworth, has quite a cast of interesting characters. They all keep the plot moving forward, and I especially liked the development of the relationship between Frank and Andy. The characters deal with and resolve human doubts, hesitations, and misunderstandings in realistic ways. I would have liked to see more resolution with Aunt Penny's diagnosis and Millie's quest for the "right " man. The ending provides a satisfying surprise for readers. A great beach vacation read!Runaway RomanceIn Miralee Ferrell’s Runaway Romance, Ann Stanway decides she needs time away from Scott Adson to think about the most recent development in his family’s reality TV show. To get the distance she seeks, she leaves town. That right there intrigued me and ensured there would be more to this story than romance. There’s nothing else predictable about this story, either, only a cast of heart-warming characters against opposition you love to dislike. I read this in mostly one sitting (had to break for food) to find out how the author would resolve the conflict without inflicting serious harm to one or more very likeable characters. Clara’s story added additional reader interest and insight to the main characters. I look forward to the second book and reading more about Hunter, Ann, and Sarah. The opening of Annette Irby’s Finding Love in Friday Harbor drew me right into the story. Her captivating story and excellent description kept me reading more quickly than I had planned! Time and time again, I wondered how the characters were going to get out of a predicament. The characters’ growth was well portrayed and I wasn’t sure how the story would end until I got there. When the next book in the series comes out, I’d certainly consider reading it.A Love to Treasure, an intriguing romance set in Sunriver, Oregon, provides readers with an experience that is the next best thing to being there. The first book in a series, the ending leaves readers satisfied, yet at the same time looking forward to reading more about these characters. Nicole embarks on a scavenger hunt prepared by her late grandmother, and finds mystery and humor along the way. The warmth of the character’s interactions made me feel I was vacationing in the warmth of the small inviting community along with Nicole. Fans of Kimberly Rose Johnson won’t be disappointed! An Anchor on Her Heart is a well-written and thoughtful story. In the first couple of pages I had a few questions as the story started. The author does a great job drawing readers in with her portrayal of Sydney, an autistic child. It works well to have Sydney as a major, yet non-point of view, character. The scene with Dane and Rudy on the ship was also very realistic, as while I was reading the book, my husband relayed a similar conversation he’d been part of—not the setting, but the way the two interacted. One of the things I liked most about this story is that it’s not predictable. Readers have to admire Rudy for the way he puts his own wishes aside to help reunite a family. Rudy’s mother is another strong non-point of view character who adds heart-warming depth to the story. Patricia Lee skillfully draws bits and pieces from her own life experiences to create an entertaining and thought-provoking story.

First Impressions: Andrew Wyeth, by Richard Meryman

From Kirkus Reviews

In the ``First Impressions'' series, a detailed, perceptive portrait of a contemporary painter who has received both critical admiration and popular acclaim, by a long-time friend who first wrote about Wyeth in the 60's. Meryman's primary focus is Wyeth's boyhood--a choice that, in this case, is appropriate: his lively youth and relationship with his colorful but overwhelming father, N. C. Wyeth, is not only of particular interest to young people but crucial to Andrew's development. N.C., who had hoped for recognition as a painter, was best known as a fine illustrator; he was also a respected teacher. Andrew was lucky to be the last of his five gifted children, thriving in the vibrant family milieu but also benefiting from some benign neglect. His own work is seen here as a rich, creative blend of N.C.'s rigorous instruction and fertile example, and of an artist's compelling need to find his own way. Countering the popular conception of Andrew as a throwback or traditionalist, Meryman points out both the emotional complexity of his subjects and their treatment and the intellectual nature of compositions that, like abstract art, are determined more by form and color than by content. The paintings reproduced are well chosen to represent Wyeth's development and range. A fascinating, entertaining, and beautiful book. Excellent color reproductions with full citations; b&w photos; index. (Biography. 11+) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

One of the best books ever written on the work of my grandfather. Hoving was a dear family friend & a brilliant writer. Rather than offering the reader an analysis of the symbolism in my grandfathers work, Hoving interviewed Andy and choose to use only Andy's words. Bravo!

This book is a MUST HAVE for any Wyeth or "realist" fan. Or for any fan of American Art. Or for any fan of painting or art in general. Last night I was browsing the book while watching the news- and before I knew it I was completely transported. I felt like I had been on a little vacation. It's that kind of book. Beautiful format- and a wonderfull, extremely interesting insight into the mind of the artist.

This is a wonderful collection of Wyeth's works! I love the commentary on the individual pieces from Wyeth himself. It's humorous as well as informative. Unfortunately Amazon sent it in a simple bubblewrap envelope and this new book arrived with a small tear in the back cover. I could return it, but I'm pretty hard on books myself, and this is one I will refer to again and again, so I won't bother with replacement. I am sending a note to amazon that this was pretty sloppy for a collector's type of book. I may end up buying more copies for family gifts, but I will buy directly from the Farnsworth museum the next time I go. Well worth the price!

I love this book for so many reasons. The Wyeth legacy is one of true Americana and should be read and understood by everyone, not just artists. A delicate soul and a skilled painter with a secret life of intrigue, Andrew Wyeth's work and life is a gem to learn about and this book is one of the best at understanding it.

I am not sure why this is called an autobiography. What it does offer is a brief commentary by the artist for each painting. But the book is large enough for good-size reproductions and they seem to be of good quality. There are all in color and there are enough paintings included to have a sufficient overview of his best work. It is great to have a fine sampling of Wyeth without the bulk of a heavy, coffee-table sized volume.

Loved this book on Andrew Wyeth! Great pictures. An interesting insight into the artist as he narrates each painting, giving a greater understanding to the man - showing his more human side that I've never glimpsed from other readings. Highly recommended!

Wonderfully informative book. Accurate depiction of colors. Good to read Wyeth's words and background on each painting. Both those new to Wyeth and longtime fans should benefit from this book.

As a longtime Andrew Wyeth admirer this book is a pure delight. It ties beautifully back to the early books of Wanda Corn and others who have written on Andrew. But what is wonderful is that, with the recent passing of Andrew we now have a complete overview of a remarkable man and his inner thoughts underscoring and illuminating a choice selection of some of his most progressive works of art in this text. Surely this is the book that will become the classic in the Wyeth lore and well it should be. William Havlicek PhD.

Love this collection! My children can't stop giggling when we read the poems together before bedtime. I also use this when we study our poetry unit at school. I read the Poem of the Day to my students and the poems are almost always from this book. The students gravitate toward it when we have a little free reading time. Get this book!

Good physical condition and my son loves the poems

Lots of funny sayings!

My granddaughter whose 10 years old chose this book for a class projecy. One of her favorite book of poems.

We read the poems to our seven year old granddaughters who liked them, but would be even better for young boys to read and listen to.

Tons of poems that my six year old loves. And came early

I was reading these to my kids as they all independently played Legos, they were all laughing out loud! By the third page they were all gathered around me on the couch. Throughout the day they kept referencing back to the funny poems and it opened conversation trying to understanding what they all meant. It's definitely light/child humor... But a very fun read! My kids ran and got the book to read many of them to my husband at dinner!

I have four young boys who love this book. They enjoy a variety of poem books, including classics, but they always come back to this one. I'll admit that not every poem is all that funny, but most are very silly and good for a laugh. My boys each have their own personal favorites and even my 4 year old will look at the funny illustrations and giggle because it reminds him of something funny he heard us read. I was amazed to find my six and eight year olds reading several pages to friends during a recent sleepover.

Depending on what part of the United States you grew up in, your views of the history of slavery in the U.S. are probably distorted. Cornell University historian Edward E. Baptist knows those distortions, and has done his part to clarify the historical record in The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism. The biggest takeaway is that the foundation of the US economy built on slavery. This can't be emphasized enough. Baptist writes that in 1832, "cotton made by enslaved people was driving US economic expansion. Almost all commercial production and consumption fed into or spun out from a mighty stream of white bolls. Politicians and entrepreneurs used the force of cotton's flood like a millrace to turn other wheels." Moving forward a few years, "more than $600 million, or almost half of the economic activity in the United States in 1836, derived directly or indirectly from cotton produced by the million-odd slaves . . . who in that year toiled in labor camps on slavery's frontier."In economics and in the United States's international standing, "Slavery's expansion was the driving force in US history between the framing of the Constitution and the beginning of the Civil War. It made the nation large and unified." And to those who say that slavery would have fizzled out eventually even without the Civil War, Baptist writes, "this is mere dogma. The evidence points in the opposite direction." Slavery was brutally efficient and expanding, and slave owners--and the nation--had every reason to continue the practice. The question for modern Americans is what, if anything, is to be done in response? Put simply, our nation and our economy were built upon theft. Our forebears stole labor and lives, and we all benefit from the economic structures they built. Even with the discrimination and racism that blacks still experience, they, too, benefit from the American system. Baptist's arguments could inform an argument for reparations, but I don't believe there is a way to measure who would get what and from what source they would be paid.As a side note, as someone who grew up in Texas and has felt the disparagement from northerners who believe they hold some sort of moral high ground on the question of slavery and racism, I would point out with Baptist that northerners are no less culpable than southerners. Both north and south benefitted from and enabled slavery. Northern banks loaned the money to enables southerners to buy slaves and land. Northern textile mills bought up the cotton produced by southern slaves. Aside from the very small number of abolitionists, no one in this system escapes guilt.Besides the economic argument Baptist lays out, he frames this history in the context of many slave narratives. He tells the larger story through the eyes of individual slaves and their experiences. Suffice it to say that any slave history that portrays slaves as happy workers who are considered part of the family of the plantation owners, with a few bad apples who whip a slave every now and then, has the story reversed. Doubtless there were some slaves who were treated well. But Baptist describes the brutality of the labor camps, the heartlessness of slave owners who split up families and ship slaves off, and the commodification of the slaves themselves. His accounts of the dehumanizing and demeaning ways slaves were treated will disabuse the reader of any notions of some idyllic workers' paradise. The story as Baptist tells it is powerfully condemning of the slave system--as if any of us need convincing. He demolishes any popular perception of slavery in the American South, especially in the cotton producing work camps, as some sort of benevolent employment. He demolishes any thought that slavery was a dying institution that would have disappeared, and that the Civil War was necessary. I know some historians may disagree with Baptist's conclusions. I'm no historian, but I think Baptist presents a compelling case. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

The content of the first 20-30 pages gave the impression that the book had been mistitled. However, by page 120 I had become convinced that the author had provided an vital resources in in understanding how the dots connected between slavery~cotton~manifest destiny~capitalism~the brutal nature of this peculiar institution. I read heavily on the subject of slavery and found this to be the best treatment to date that I have found to address the connection between slavery and America's rise to become a 20th century superpower. This book was so good that I purchased and listened it on CD after having read the print copy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Edward Baptist makes several strong arguments, some of which turn conventional wisdom on its head. Some of his arguments are difficult to read and go against our preferred versions of U.S.history.He details how American slavery was one of the most productive economic institutions in world history and how the expansion of slavery made the U.S. into a modern industrial empire. He details how slavery, by use of torture and terrorism, increased productivity and made the cotton industry the biggest, most sustained, expansion of the economy in human history. He makes the point that it wasn't just a Southern industry; indeed it benefitted the entire world -- from Northern banks, ship builders and industries that supported slavery (farm implements, whips, ropes, chains, etc) to the textile mills of Western Europe, especially Britain. And he makes a good argument that slavery would not have died if it hadn't been for the Civil War. Indeed, from the founding of the nation, slavery had grown for 70 years at a rate unprecedented in human history. There's no evidence to suggest that such a profitable and productive industry would have ever died out on its own accord. He shows that the cotton industry was never as productive again, after it lost it's use of the whip. Finally, he points out that the South brought about their own destruction. It was they that always pushed for more and more expansion of slavery (even contemplating taking over Cuba and all of Mexico!), which pushed Northerners into fearing for their own loss of political power. The Southern push for ever-growing slavery culminated in the creation of the new Republican Party, formed to not end slavery but to end it's expansion. The South then went to war in order to create its own government based on slavery. Thankfully, they were destroyed. It's a very well written book that not only makes his arguments with well researched historical documents. He also adds powerful voice to the millions of men, women and children who suffered under the bondage of slavery.

The Lightning Field: Travels in and Around New Mexico, by Robert Eaton

From Library Journal

Eaton, who works for the U.S. Department of the Interior in Sante Fe, offers ten stories written in the 1980s and 1990s about people and places in and around New Mexico. His is not the New Mexico of Santa Fe and Taos but rather the more remote state of Chaco Canyon, where he served as a ranger for five years, Quemado of the "Lightning Field" in the title, and Abiquiu, where there is a Benedictine monastery. Eaton has a good feel for the connection of the land and the people; his vignettes display his ability to blend history, physical description, and personal anecdote?e.g., his recollections of following part of the trail used by cowboys Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving, or a description of a souvenir vendor at Four Corners. His essays about experiences in Indian country are respectful, yet he does not romanticize. While this collection provides enjoyable reading, it is recommended only for the most comprehensive Southwest collections.?Thomas K. I've read several "travelogues" and such over the years about New Mexico, but no one has ever captured the reality of the place like Robert Eaton. Too often, writers focus on sensational features, or they're trying to 'sell' something. Eaton's stories are very different--they came about because of his own "deep immersion" experiences, rather than as someone just passing through. These pieces would be considered autobiographical except that he's not focused on himself--he's focused on what he's observing in others. He has an excellent eye and he's a brave, courageous reporter. The stories range from a trip to De Maria's "Lightning Field" to the Christ in the Desert Monastery to his experiences working at Chaco Canyon. All of the stories are very compelling. He's a very fine writer, and I hope that maybe one day he'll write another book.

The true excitement of New Mexico is not the cities and hotels, which can be found elsewhere, but the unique way in which humanity, now and throughout a colorful history, has lived in and died in and related to the strikingly beautiful geography of New Mexico. Drive past the new suburbs of Albuquerque and you are suddenly confronted by the overwhelming presence of nature. This is both wonderful and scary (to a city slicker). If God were anywhere, he'd be here, and you'd probably feel like striking up a conversation. Robert Eaton has lived in the Southwest for many years, and has worked in such strikingly amazing places as Chaco Canyon. His book is an entertaining series of his personal experiences, each in a unique setting in the far reaches of New Mexico. Each experience is also an encounter with one or more colorful characters, including many native Americans, religious seekers, and loner forest rangers, not to mention rattlers, coyotes, and eagles. But place never leaves center stage for long. In fact, it is the interaction of people and place that Mr. Eaton captures with great precision and poetry. This book does not recommend hotels, restaurants, or other trappings of the comfortable life. Other books can do that. Instead, Robert Eaton shares his discoveries, collected over many years, so that we may gain a better sense of what makes New Mexico truly unique, not what makes it more of the same. If you have been to the places Eaton characterizes, as I have to some, you get to experience them again in a well-written account, even with a new richness. The adventurers among you will feel the rising urge to go and see these places first hand. (That is certainly the effect Mr. Eaton's book has had on me.) Those who prefer to experience these places in your mind's eye from the comfort and security of your plush reading chair will find that this book goes well with a glowing fire, warm dog, and perhaps a glass of Merlot.
