While I can't prove it my sense is that Charmed is at least partly responsible for the revival in popular interest in all things Ouija. In the opening episode it was a spirit board that led the sisters to the discovery that they are the Charmed Ones. But that wasn't just any spirit board; the board used in nearly every season of the show is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful boards I have ever seen. From the first moment I laid eyes on it, I had to have one.I own one of the "official" replicas and I am not happy with it but the "Charmed Board" launched an entire genre of spirit boards. Like Wicca itself the board appears older than it is and made almost supernaturally from a single cut of wood.The show has major Ouija appeal but beyond that it is a fun and addicting show. They make some huge faux pas. For instance, I cringe every time the sisters say they are going to scry to find something or someone and then they dowse. Their world view, particularly when it comes to the dichotomy of good and evil, leans more to the Judeo/Christian tradition than the Wiccan. But hey it's a fun television show and like all fiction it creates its own world with its own rules.As a fan I have picked up a number of books about Charmed, some fiction, some non-fiction, even comic books but of all the books I have read The Unofficial Charmed Companion by NE Genge had the most lasting impact on me.I have a complete library of books on Wicca and witchcraft but the techniques in what I will call "The Companion" are like nothing I have ever seen before. The book presents as a simple commentary on Charmed but along the way the author gives her readers one of the most concise and clearly explained introductions to witchcraft as any I have encountered.In one section she gives instructions for the use of the Ouija that I have never seen anywhere else and I have some fifty odd books on Ouija and spirit boards. In my opinion, this brief two-page instructional is worth the price of the book but the author gives is so much more.NE Genge covers all the basics of the craft in a non-sectarian way. After covering basic tools and their proper use including Ouija, she covers spell work in detail. Then in section five, "The Observant Witch," she provides a commentary on every episode of the first two seasons. There were eight seasons of the series and I wish NE Genge would update this work to include her commentary on every episode but what she does with the first two seasons is give her readers an education. Her "magical notes" on each episode provide an indispensable insight into the real magical lessons of each episode.It would be easy to overlook this book. Maybe you don't like Charmed; maybe you have never watched a single episode. It doesn't matter. This is a great book even if you are not a fan. If your inclination is magical this is a book you should not pass up.Much love,David

It only covers first two seasons out of eight! For someone new to the Craft, it's a great guide to learning about everything the show got wrong. Okay...well it's a TV show for entertainment purposes.The book walks you through traditional spell/ritual work, throws in blurbs about showshow randomly, then ends with a rundown of each episode (including bloopers like wardrobe and prop mishaps) and is VERY Prue heavy. I expected more to be honest and was disappointed when I finished the book in one afternoon. Arrived quickly in great quality however so there's a plus.

I don't like the book very much for the reason that I thought it was going to be a hard covered and I know that is a papercove , I thought it was going to be a big book like the way they have on the show, but I do like a couple of stuff that it has , I like it but I am not 100% satisfied with it

I thought this book would be all about charmed and show things from the show's book of shadows. It actually has spells from some other source. I wanted this as a keepsake along with my charmed dvd's and books. Also, I place my order on Dec. 7th and delivery showed Dec 13-Dec 31. I didn't get this until Jan 3. It said it shipped from FL but actually came from UK. Overall, not really happy with this.

Love it. Really put some perspective into things.

Not the greatest quality or what i was really looking for

I thought this was more of an ingredient list when I looked at it online, and honestly I haven't had time to really get into it. But at first glance it wasn't exactly what I thought it was. I watched Charmed but not religiously, it got sorta weird at the end, but I did enjoy the series. I think I thought this was more like the Original B.O. S. that was shown on the TV show.

Thought this would be more authentic. Not impressed

Lassis, raitas, breads and some unexpectedly Western-sounding desserts (e.g., Blueberry-Lemon Pie and Gingersnap Pudding) complete the volume. Unfortunately, the book's minuscule print poses a nuisance for home cooks, who may be called upon to dash back and forth, adding spices to the pan every 30 seconds. Best of all the Indian cookbooks, and I've tried many different ones after several trips to India. This is the only one I use regularly. In fact, it's in my main weekly rotation, along with Alice Waters, Bittman and Marcella. Once you have the five or six basic spices handy, and a few staples like the right lentils, some dried coconut flakes, and some small dried red chiles, you're set. The basic recipes that he starts each chapter are excellent. And because it's delicious Indian food, this is a great book if you want to go all vegetarian.His secret for home cooks, is that he makes everything as fast and simple possible, like a true Indian grandma, but he insists on toasting fresh spices -- and if possible grinding them in your grinder (if possible). That's the one area where he doesn't encourage taking shortcuts. It makes all the difference and only takes an extra minute or so. Same for his dals. You need to make the tempering oil, as he shows, to get the layers of flavor that dazzle people. It is not a beautifully designed or "pretty" cookbook. It's not for show. But Suvir really, really knows the needs of the home cook. Simple recipes, easy to understand, etc. Even his way of making rice is so simple. Also, if you google videos of him, you'll see him on Martha Stewart or elsewhere making many of the basic dishes, which can be helpful.

I've made about a dozen recipes from this cookbook, and every single one of them has been excellent.The best:* dal with ginger and lime -- of the gagillion dal recipes I've tried, this is the best. Pungent, spicy, and citrusy all at once* hyderabad cauliflower -- creamy, with mint, cilantro, and coconut-- fantastic!* baingan bharta -- baingan bharta, in general, is one of my favorite dishes of all time, and Saran's recipe passed the test. It's succulent but not too rich and mushy (like some baingan bhartas)* the okra with northern Indian spices -- I wasn't even sure I liked okra, but the texture and flavors in this dish can't be beatOther top hits: stir-fried cabbage with south Indian spices; spicy mango chutney; dhansak (a spicy eggplant, squash, and lentil Stew); and the chai tea recipe.A few of the things I love about Indian Home Cooking:1) Medium level of difficulty/complexity/exoticism. The other Indian recipes I usually make come from *The Asian Vegan Kitchen* (http://www.amazon.com/The-Asian-Vegan-Kitchen-Appetizing/dp/156836430X). It's a phenomenal cookbook, and I use it regularly, but most of the recipes require making complicated pastes or powders beforehand. By contrast, in *Indian Home Cooking* Saran has really split the difference between super-complicated recipes that require hard-to-find ingredients, and super-simple recipes that say, "Just add curry powder! Instantly exotic!"2) On the subject of exoticism... some people might find fault in this cookbook for being 'inauthentic.' Yes, there's a recipe for a tofu scramble. And yes, the (amazing) okra recipe is prefaced by a note saying something like, "This recipe doesn't really come from any particular place or tradition; it's just how I like to cook okra when I'm short on time." In another recipe (I can't remember which and don't have the book on hand), Saran admits that the recipe is--like the modern state of India itself--rather new and always already a hybrid. Other recipes, like the hyderabadi cauliflower, come from regions of India already known for their cultural and culinary mixing. In short: Saran doesn't waste time fetishizing or performing authenticity; he simply shares recipes that are generally Indian, and sophisticated in palate while still highly accessible.3) Vegan/Vegetarian, plus. I'm a vegan, and this is the only non-vegetarian cookbook I've ever spent money on. There are so many fantastic non-meat recipes; I use something like 80% of the cookbook. That said, the book would also be a great gift to share with meat-eaters. Basically, EVERYONE WHO LIKES INDIAN FOOD, AND LIKES TO COOK, SHOULD HAVE THIS COOKBOOK.

This is a wonderful introduction to Indian cooking. The ingredients are geared toward American cooks with easier to find ingredients that can be ordered online or found at ethnic stores and the recipes are easy to follow and adjust to your liking. I've really enjoyed exploring Indian home cooking, and my kids love all the spices and flavors. I appreciate the information at the beginning of each recipe that describes the origin of the dish as well. Because I'm cooking for small children and I myself am not a fan of spicy food, I usually omit the chili peppers and that's what's great about making Indian food at home. Every recipe I've tried has come out wonderful, and I've learned so many techniques along the way. The authors really make the challenge of learning Indian cooking very accessible to the home cook which is likely due to the authors experience as a cooking instructor. I don't know how "authentic" the recipes are, all I know is they're delicious!

Although over 10 years old, this book is and will remain an important contribution to the field of environmental justice. It captures, with analytic rigor and a sense of being grounded in reality (and not theory), the struggle for healthy environments in many poor and minority communities. There are many books in the field that are quite good but this book will always be a classic.

I read this for an environmental psychology class and was quite glad that I chose this book from the list of options. It was not only informative but also an easy and entertaining read. If you are interested in environmental justice, this is a great introduction to the movement and also a great historical review.

I'm all for getting angry at injustice-- count me in! But when authors do so with such bias and such poor writing skills, I find myself getting angry at the authors, not the real enemy. Further adding to the problem was the issue of the authors writing about themselves in the third person, using such adjectives as "creative," "witty," etc. Save it for the resume, please.I understand that the issue of environmental justice is very heated, and why the authors only chose to tell their sides of the story. However, their language-- almost "he said she said" like, in a way-- turned me off so much that I struggled to read the chapters assigned for my class. I believe at one point they even referred to the other side as "evil." Fantastic, the other side probably is evil. However, writing such in a book that you want people to take seriously is really kind of strange.A few Google searches would do a better job of illuminating the issues behind environmental justice.

I also had to purchase this book for class, It was a very interesting book. I would recommend purchasing it on the Kindle.

Unorganized and unclear thinking. The stories are round about and to many assumption are made with little evidence. I would not recommend this book.

Although the authors fully acknowledge the prevalence of racism in our society and the lack of easy fixes to the problems faced by disadvantaged communities, they nevertheless convey an inspiring sense of idealism and optimism about the future possibilities for "the movement".

For those people who want a wide-ranging introduction to the environmental justice movement and its legal arm, this is the place to turn. Written by a movement lawyer activist and a legal academic, this book captures the social and legal evolution of the environmental justice movement in a way that highlights the work of the communities themselves. Vigorously written, the book would be worth the price just for the chapter on transformative politics and its comprehensive annotated bibliography. A must have.

Little too "dark" for my 7&4 yr old. Kids already have fear of the dark and this book plays on it imho.It's a longer book which is nice. It rhymes which I like. But not the book for us.

This book TERRIFIED my 6 year old. The first story was cute but then they got progressively worse and I continued to read hoping there would be a story on a lighter note...nothing! My child cried and then spent the night in my room. Sent it back the next day.

I ordered this book for my 2nd grade son for Christmas. He loves to read before going to bed. Unfortunately, this book has pictures of monsters, mentions poltergeists, and references monsters biting children in their sleep. I am just not impressed with a book like this.

The most surprising part is the number of 4+star reviews for this book. Leaving aside the fact that the book was definitely not age appropriate, the quality of writing was poor. The â€˜poemsâ€™ had an eerie quality of having been written by a robot with no imagination, feeling or a good grasp of the English language. The front page claims that the author is a â€˜Childrenâ€™s Poet Laureateâ€™! I assumed this would be a good thing but it apparently is not. $2.95 is way expensive for this piece of crap. Luckily Amazon obliged with a full refund.

This was the most eff up childâ€™s book I have ever read, and I read a lot. The book started off pretty well and then took a nose dive off into the most random thoughts. It was literally like going on a herion experience with the author. Seriously, whatever thought came to mind while smoking really bad weed is what this book consists of. There were several â€œWTFâ€ moments so if you like those then this book is for you! Iâ€™m not saying Iâ€™m a perfect writer and I do give a star for effort in this case. I also gave a star bc it put my kid to sleep by 10 pages in.

Don't buy this book if you love your child.Being an Orthodox Christian family, I am very cautious about what kind of books my child reads and generally, I rarely skip reviews before I buy something on Amazon. And this was that rare case... I have no words to express how horrible this book was. It's full of scary looking demonic monsters. Never bothered to return it, just burned it.

My second grader loves this book. It's one of his favorites to choose from for night time reading. A good challenge for him.

A couple of the poems and illustrations may be a bit scary for little ones.
